Chapter 1:
Polymathic
There was a girl. She had short red hair and was wearing tattered clothes. The world around her was on fire and there was no one else in sight. My skin burned immediately. As I approached the girl, she turned towards me, her eyes covered with a black mist-like substance. Then she turned to me and spoke.
"You shouldn't be here yet."
It was midnight. My skin still felt like it was on fire, just like in the dream. When I opened the door I saw a girl in my school uniform standing in the black mist over her eyes. She said something but I couldn't hear it. When I approached her, she started laughing happily. I stepped back and watched the cars speed by with music playing narrowly missing me. The girl is gone.
The next day at school, I was talking about the incident with Shoji, a close friend of mine.
“Either you were tired, or you were still asleep. Back to the topic, how on earth did you create a girlfriend?"
"How many times have you asked me since Sachi and I started dating?"
"It's been a month and I'm still mad that she asked you out!"
"I'm not going to fight over a girl if I want her to be my guest."
“The problem is, she asks you out and you say yes, but I get rejected twice a month even though you don't even like her. ”
“One of those problems is your fault.” I watched in real time as his face flashed and then he was blown away.
"Can you at least treat her like a lover? She's been in class for a few minutes and you haven't even said hello to her."
“You should have said that from the beginning,” I called for her, and she bumped Shoji out of the way and came to me. She had her hair tied up in a ponytail and seemed happy to see me.
"Good morning Sachi."
“You were grilling Sato again, right?”
"Calm down, that's what this time was for," she interrupted him, stomping his foot.
"I don't need your help." It sounded like they had discussed this beforehand, so I thought I just gave them what they wanted.
“I was wondering what you had planned this weekend?”
“Just planning on watching some movies and studying, honestly nothing spectacular.”
“I'll accompany you. Plus I could keep you up longer than studying and would be more exciting than a movie.” I stared her in the eyes while saying that and she instantly blushed and looked at her friends who were embarrassed for her. After stumbling over her words she accepted my invitation and went over to her friends.
“There's no way you just asked her that with a straight face and no fear.”
“What was there to fear? Not much that could've happened.”
“What if she wasn't that type of girl or didn't like you enough to agree?”
“Sadly I would've been down one girlfriend I didn't ask for in the first place.”
Later that day, Sachi and I went to a convenience store to buy snacks for the weekend.
"Hey, Sato," she looked down, so I grabbed the bag from her hand.
"Thank you, but that's not what I was trying to ask. Why did you say yes when I asked you to be my boyfriend?" Shoji had something to do with this I could tell.
"There was no reason to refuse."
“So why did you say yes?'' She looked disappointed, so I pulled her closer and she started blushing.
“Did you need a reason to say yes?”
"Oh, that cat looks like me!" She squirmed out of my arms and went to get a closer look at the cat.
You're a liar, aren't you?'' I looked across the street and saw the same girl as before, but this time I heard her voice.
"You were just bored."
“Who are you?” I whispered as I walked towards her.
" Poor girl. Even if you say no, it wouldn't have changed anything.”
"What are you talking about?" She started walking further away, so I walked closer. As we got closer, everything started to become dark.
"I can change that for you."
"Sato!"
I heard a voice from behind me. When I turned around, I saw Sachi with a pained look on her face, so I turned towards her. As I turned, I saw a truck coming towards me, and suddenly it became dark.
``That took you long enough.'' I looked down and saw my body lying motionless. And then I was swallowed up by darkness.
"What did you do? What the hell did you do!" She didn't reply. She just stood there like she couldn't understand me.
"Don't act like you can't hear me." I ran towards her, but no matter how much I screamed or ran, I couldn't reach her. This went on for hours until I gave up and sat there. Hours passed before she spoke again.
"So, are you still bored?"
"How long have I been here?"
"Time is a strange subject here, and we should rather not cherish it."
"That doesn't answer my question."
"I don't like time, so I don't have time." I looked around and saw only my lifeless body below me. It's been around for so long that it doesn't surprise me anymore.
“Am I dead?”
“Yes, I was asking about boredom when you were struck by a large vehicle. Your chest and heart were pushed forward and ribs were broken. You died instantly”
"You're the one who caused that, aren't you?"
“The guy who discovered oil did.”
"Why did you kill me?"
"You were bored. I wanted to help you. I've looked into your heart. Life is so simple that you don't understand its importance. There's no point in doing anything because you're just a cog in a giant clock where every cog in the world is counting down to the day it expires. Every day is the same, every life is the same. I... You can change that by living a life of struggle, fulfillment, and significance.”
"No, I want to go back."
"I think it's clear there's no going back." She tilted her head towards the body beneath me and it faded away. I lost it.
``Take me back, demon.'' She stopped talking and just stood there examining her clothes.
“I took a liking to the uniform that girl was wearing. I've never seen a demon in such cute attire. Rise to the top of the new world and eventually become a god. If you do that, anything will come true, including transitioning back to your old life. As I said earlier, you are just a cog in the clock, maintaining the clock. People can always change gears.”
"No, time isn't present right? Then I'll just sit here."
“What's the point in solving a puzzle that can never be completed? The simple thrill of putting all the pieces in place? Do you know you'll die before you're done? In the new world, you'll be a polymathic. A person who's not limited by age and who has all the time in the world. You can complete the puzzle and become a god and take my place.”
"That's it. You're a god who doesn't want to be a god anymore. I mean, you're more bored than I am, so if you don't want to be that bad, leave. You're a god, aren't you?"
"I have completed this epic puzzle many times. My boredom has gone further than you can imagine. I just want to give this paradise to someone else and be reborn. No matter how good or bad I live, when the sun sets and the moon rises, I'm still God. Just like you, I'm bored."
"There's no point in being angry if I can't do anything about it, other than the fact that you had to kill me to give me this opportunity. So how does this work?” She smiled as I contemplated my decision. Wondering if it was a mistake.
"Please stand up, let's begin."
I was standing and surrounded by trees. It was almost pitch black, with only a slight glow in front of me. As I walked along, I noticed that the base of the tree was turning red. As I was walking, a light flashed and went into the tree. I shifted to my right, shining the light into the face of a man with a trimmed beard. He held his hands around the flame and flew towards me. I tried to run, but a blunt object hit me in the head, leaving me unconscious.
"A polymath would never fall for such a thing."
