Chapter 26:
Threshold Of Time
Time: 2048
Location: Berlin, Global Innovation Center – Command Wing
The hum of broken machinery echoed softly in the room, punctuated by flickering lights. Theo stood in the center, his gaze fixed on the data streaming across Helena’s console. The Architect was gone—or at least trapped—but the signs of disruption lingered like scars on a once-smooth surface. They were back in their world, yet nothing felt quite the same.
Helena sat cross-legged on the floor, her fingers tapping away at the half-functional systems. Her exhaustion was palpable, but her determination remained intact. She adjusted the display, frowning as the tangled web of data flickered and shifted under her scrutiny.
"We stabilized the core," Helena said, rubbing her temples, "but there’s still something wrong. The anomalies didn’t stop. They’ve... evolved."
Theo knelt beside her, staring at the monitor. The data showed small changes—events that shouldn’t have happened, paths that didn’t exist in the original timeline. But they weren’t catastrophic... not yet.
Kalen leaned against a broken console, arms crossed. "So, what? We broke the universe, and now it’s taking its sweet time unraveling?"
Helena shook her head. "It’s not unraveling—it’s... reconfiguring." She glanced at Theo. "The Architect’s influence may be gone, but the timelines are still trying to repair themselves. And they’re not following the rules anymore."
Theo exhaled slowly, the weight of her words settling over him. If reality was reshaping itself, then the consequences of their actions had only begun to show.
A sharp beep interrupted the silence, drawing all eyes to the screen. Helena’s brows furrowed as she read the report. "Sector Twelve," she murmured. "A person just... appeared. No origin, no records—just showed up out of nowhere."
Theo’s stomach tightened. A temporal echo. "Could it be fallout from the rift?"
Helena tapped the console again, scanning the anomaly. "It’s possible. Whatever happened in the rift, it didn’t just disappear when we escaped."
Kalen whistled softly. "So, what do we think? Ghost from a timeline that no longer exists?"
Helena shook her head. "Not exactly. If the timelines are converging... fragments from other realities might be slipping through. It’s like..." She trailed off, struggling for the right words. "It’s like the fabric of time is fraying at the edges."
Theo clenched his fists. The Architect’s trap hadn’t just threatened their world—it had left fractures that stretched across realities. And now, they were seeing the first signs of what that meant.
"Suit up," Theo ordered, standing abruptly. "We’re heading to Sector Twelve."
Location: Sector Twelve – BerlinThe streets were eerily silent as Theo, Helena, and Kalen moved through Sector Twelve. It was a part of the city that had weathered the upheaval relatively well—until now. The few streetlights still standing flickered erratically, casting uneasy shadows over the cracked pavement.
Theo kept his hand close to his sidearm as they navigated the narrow alleyways. He could feel the wrongness in the air—a subtle shift, like the city itself was holding its breath.
"Anything on the scanner?" Theo asked.
Helena adjusted her handheld device. "It’s faint, but the signal’s steady. Whatever we’re dealing with, it’s close—and it’s not fully anchored here."
Kalen flashed his usual grin, though it didn’t reach his eyes. "Anchored or not, if it’s dangerous, we should probably try to make friends before it bites."
Theo shot him a look. "Focus."
They turned a corner and found a young woman standing alone under the flickering light of a streetlamp. She was motionless, her expression distant, as if lost in thought. Her clothes looked worn but unfamiliar—like they belonged to another era, or perhaps another reality entirely.
Helena’s scanner beeped urgently. "This is it," she whispered. "She’s the anomaly."
Theo approached cautiously, keeping his hands visible. "Hey. Can you hear me?"
The woman blinked slowly, as if waking from a dream. When her gaze locked on Theo, something flickered in her eyes—recognition.
"You..." she whispered, her voice hoarse. "You’re Theo."
Theo froze. His name, spoken by a stranger who shouldn’t know it. "How do you know me?" he asked, keeping his voice steady.
The woman smiled faintly, though there was sadness in her expression. "I know you because... you saved me. Or... you tried to."
Kalen muttered under his breath. "Well, that’s ominous."
00:03:21 – The Woman’s StoryTheo exchanged a glance with Helena, then took a step closer to the woman. "Where are you from?"
The woman’s smile faded. "I’m from... a version of the timeline that no longer exists. One where things were different. Where you made different choices."
Helena’s scanner beeped again, warning of instability. "She’s not supposed to be here," Helena murmured. "Her timeline... it’s gone. She’s a fragment—something left behind."
Theo’s heart sank. The timelines they had touched, the worlds they had tried to fix—some of them were gone forever. And this woman was living proof of what they had lost.
"I don’t understand," Theo said quietly. "How did you end up here?"
The woman shook her head slowly. "I don’t know. One moment, I was... somewhere else. And then I was here. It’s like the universe decided to rewrite me."
Theo’s chest tightened. "Are there others like you? Other fragments?"
The woman’s gaze darkened. "Maybe. But if there are, they won’t last long. The timeline is fragile—it doesn’t like things that don’t belong."
Helena shot Theo a grim look. "If these fragments keep appearing... it could destabilize everything. The fractures will only spread."
Theo felt the weight of her words settle over him. They had escaped the rift, but their fight wasn’t over. The world was still trying to rebuild itself—and some things would never fit into the new reality.
"So, what do we do?" Kalen asked, his voice unusually serious. "Can we send her back? Or is she stuck here?"
The woman gave a small, sad laugh. "There’s nowhere left to go. My timeline... it’s gone. I’m what’s left."
00:00:48 – The Next StepTheo clenched his jaw. Every choice they made seemed to create more problems, more uncertainty. But this time, there was no going back—no way to fix what had been lost.
Helena’s voice was quiet but steady. "We can’t change what’s happened. But we can stop it from getting worse."
Theo nodded slowly. They couldn’t undo the past, but they could still protect the future. Even if the timeline remained broken, they would find a way to live with the pieces.
Kalen gave a short laugh, though there was no humor in it. "So, we just roll with it, huh? Sounds like a plan."
