Chapter 4:
Kage No Mana
Night cast its dark veil over the village of Kisaragi, cloaking the houses and trees in a stifling silence. Ryo tread carefully, his fingers instinctively brushing the grip of his pistol concealed beneath his coat. The menacing calm weighed heavily around him, like the stillness of the sea before a storm.
“Why is there so much tension here…” he muttered to himself, his breathing quickened.
He paused briefly, watching the shifting shadows around him. It was as if the village itself was holding its breath. From the heart of the nearby forest, strange murmurs rose, distant echoes distorted by the chilling wind. Every tree, every leaf seemed to hold a secret — dark and ominous.
“Show yourself,” Ryo demanded in a low but steady voice, tightening his grip on his weapon.
A low, mocking laugh echoed, emerging from the darkness. The sound reverberated strangely, as though the voice emanated from the shadows themselves, filled with cold derision.
“A mere human without magic dares summon me?” the voice scoffed. “Such audacity... and such folly.”
Ryo lifted his chin, refusing to show any hesitation.
“Magic? It’s just one way to fight. I’ve never needed it for my work, and I don’t plan to start now.”
Suddenly, a dark figure emerged from the shadows, resembling a living shadow, its edges shifting and unstable like a cloud of smoke. Two glowing red eyes fixed on Ryo with an unsettling gleam.
“A mana-less tracker... pathetic,” it sneered. “Do you really think that toy can hurt me?”
Ryo smirked.
“Maybe you’re underestimating me.”
Without waiting for a reply, he pulled the trigger. A gunshot cracked through the air, and the bullet tore forward, aimed straight at the Shadow.
But the creature dodged with supernatural fluidity, melting into the darkness like mist before reforming. Its laugh echoed again, cold and mocking.
“Pathetic! Do you truly believe a gun can touch me?”
Ryo showed no frustration; instead, he remained calm.
“Maybe bullets aren’t enough, but I don’t just rely on them. I came here for a reason, and I’m not leaving until I uncover what you’re hiding.”
A silence fell. The Shadow seemed almost thrown off, as if Ryo’s words stirred something close to worry within it.
“Such naivety…” the creature murmured, its eyes glowing with a more intense light. “Do you think you can grasp what lies beyond human understanding?”
Ryo shrugged, his eyes piercing the darkness, unblinking.
“Maybe. But that kind of danger has never stopped me before.”
The Shadow appeared to stiffen, as if it had suddenly recognized the unyielding strength in Ryo’s gaze. A flicker of disdain, mixed with a trace of respect, shone in its red eyes.
“Then show me what you’re made of, insignificant human!”
It lunged at him, its arms morphing into razor-sharp claws slashing through the air. Ryo dodged in one swift roll, quickly springing back to his feet with his pistol raised once more. He tracked each movement of the creature, searching for any weakness.
“Every being has a flaw,” he murmured to himself. “It’s only a matter of time before I find yours.”
The Shadow hesitated, its eyes glinting with an odd wariness. Its voice grew rough, almost admiring.
“You’re far more stubborn than the others,” it admitted. “But it won’t make any difference. I am part of this forest, a part of this land. And you? You’re just a visitor.”
Ryo maintained his unshakeable calm.
“Maybe. But I don’t intend to stay a visitor for long.”
The Shadow advanced again, its form shifting with each step, as though absorbing the darkness itself to grow stronger. Ryo could feel the vastness of its power, but he stood ready, his muscles tense, his senses sharp.
“Then come,” he murmured, a nearly taunting smile on his lips. “Show me you’re worthy of this land, and I’ll show you what a human without magic can do.”
The creature leaped forward, its claws slicing the air, but this time, Ryo was prepared. He rolled to the side, dodging with agility, then raised his weapon. His eyes caught a flicker in the creature’s form — a breach, a fleeting weak point. Without hesitation, he pulled the trigger.
The bullet hit its mark, slicing through the Shadow with a silvery gleam. An inhuman scream echoed as the creature staggered back, weakened by the impact.
“Fool! Do you not understand this is all just a futile attempt?”
Breathless, Ryo smirked.
“Maybe. But even a futile attempt can scar a Shadow.”
The Shadow’s eyes burned with pure fury, but for the first time, Ryo saw apprehension in its gaze.
“You think you’ve marked me? Don’t be ridiculous! I’ll show you how insignificant you truly are.”
The creature launched itself forward, striking with all its might. Ryo, caught off guard for a moment, tried to dodge, but he was too slow. A searing pain tore through his shoulder as the Shadow’s claws struck him full force, sending him sprawling to the ground.
His breath hitched, and the world around him wavered, his strength draining rapidly.
“This is where your arrogance leads you, human,” the creature mocked, moving closer to deliver the final blow.
As he felt himself fading, a strange warmth surged within him, like a dormant fire suddenly igniting. It was a dark, ancient, untamed energy, welling up from within. His vision blurred, but he noticed something peculiar: the darkness itself responded to his distress, forming a barrier between him and the Shadow.
“What?” murmured the creature, taking a step back, unsettled.
An aura of darkness enveloped Ryo, a power that was neither his own nor something a regular human could wield. The shadows, once unknown to him, had awakened to protect him.
Ryo felt his body responding instinctively to this newfound energy. He rose slowly, his eyes now tinged with a dark glow, and extended his hand toward the Shadow as if he could command the darkness itself.
“What… are you?” stammered the Shadow, hesitating, for the first time truly afraid.
“I don’t fully understand what’s happening…” Ryo murmured, almost to himself, his words filled with astonishment and confusion. “But if these shadows are here to protect me, I’ll use them against you.”
The shadows swirled around him, seeming to respond to his thoughts, and in an instant, they rushed at the Shadow, enveloping it with an uncontrollable force. A scream pierced the air as the creature struggled, trapped within this dark grasp.
Exhausted but filled with newfound determination, Ryo clenched his fists. He knew that something deep within him had awoken, something more powerful and more dangerous than he could have ever imagined.
He felt the dark energy surge around him, forming a protective yet menacing aura. The Shadow creature, who had once laughed at him, was now retreating, a visible panic gleaming in its red eyes.
"Impossible... a mere human shouldn't wield such power!" it screamed, its voice filled with despair and rage.
Ryo, though bewildered by this unknown force within him, took a step forward, his dark gaze fixed on the creature.
"You said I was just a human without magic," he murmured, a newfound confidence in his eyes. "Maybe I still am... but it seems the darkness has other plans."
The Shadow, unable to contain its terror, contorted, trying to dissolve into the surrounding gloom to escape. But Ryo’s darkness was different: it seemed to possess a will of its own, moving with relentless precision to block every attempt at escape.
The creature turned to Ryo, its face twisted with fear and incomprehension.
"What are you?!"
Ryo remained silent, extending his hand toward the Shadow. The darkness around him tightened, seeming to respond to his mere intent. It coiled like living chains, trapping the creature in a suffocating grip.
The Shadow struggled desperately, its body twisting to break free, but to no avail. Its energy was fading, each movement draining the last of its strength. The darkness absorbed it bit by bit, reducing its form further and further.
"No… not like this..." it begged in a weakening voice, its red eyes slowly dimming. "Mercy..."
Ryo watched it for a moment in silence, then clenched his fist, sealing the Shadow’s fate. The darkness abruptly contracted, smothering the creature’s final cries until only a heavy silence remained in the forest.
The red glow in the Shadow’s eyes vanished for good, and its form dissipated into a black mist that dissolved into the night’s darkness.
Breathing heavily, Ryo stepped back as he felt the darkness withdraw, slowly vanishing around him. His body returned to its normal state, but a strange sensation lingered within him, as though something unknown had awakened.
He placed a hand on his injured shoulder, the pain resurfacing now that the adrenaline was fading. But beyond the physical pain, one question persisted in his mind.
"What… is this power… and why does it respond to me?" he murmured.
A heavy silence settled once more around him, as if the forest itself were recovering from the encounter. Ryo knew he had just touched a force far greater than himself and that this was only the beginning of a long journey to understand the power that lay dormant within him.
A chill ran down his spine as he slowly made his way out of the forest, the last remnants of the Shadow fading behind him, a newfound determination shining in his eyes.
