Chapter 4:
Soullet
“Sunny side up or soft boiled?”
“Sunny side up, please!”
It’s been almost a month since Nami got her Soullet and two weeks since she and Tsukasa decided to move in together. Although it was a big decision, it didn’t change much in both musicians’ lives. Maybe it’s because they have been staying nights at each other's apartments quite often, it just felt natural to start having a stable roommate.
To be honest, it felt like the matchmaking impacted their family and friends more than the couple. After Nami and Tsukasa finally turned on their smartphones after filling their stomachs with a delicious restaurant meal, all hell broke loose. The number of spam messages was insane, most from Aya, who was ready to theorize that Tsukasa kidnapped Nami after not being successfully matched. It was a ridiculous scenario but she liked to be occasionally overdramatic, so it wasn’t anything new coming from her. Their parents on the other hand were just disappointed as they wanted to celebrate it all together and instead they felt ignored. To make up for it Nami had to promise that once she moves in with Tsukasa, they will host a party for that and somehow it worked and calmed them down.
It didn’t mean that her parents let it go, they will probably remind her of every possible fitting situation.
Moving in with Tsukasa also let Nami find out a little bit more about him and the little things he did subconsciously. Like for example, he had to knock on the doorknob after closing their apartment to make sure he definitely locked them. Once he forgot to do this little ritual. It made him extremely antsy, unsure if he definitely used the key card or if he just left without doing that. He couldn’t get the thought of their open apartment until they came back and he could check personally that the doors were indeed locked.
Nami was sure she showed some of her strange traits to her lover in exchange as well but Tsukasa had yet to share his thoughts with her. Or maybe just like her, he would rather keep it to himself and think of it as a cute kind of behavior.
Overall their lives together had been peaceful so far. It shouldn’t be surprising, after all that’s how Soullet has always been advertised.
‘Find your perfect soulmate and live your lives without any worries!’
But Nami thought that all this time it has been an exaggeration. Sure, she has never seen her parents argue, but you never know what they do behind closed doors. Some things and situations you just try to ignore or not accept. It appears that the slogan was being truthful as far as Nami was concerned. It’s just the thought of the lack of imperfections felt unnatural in a way. The perfect synchrony between her and Tsukasa was a bit freaky. She hasn’t told anyone about her thoughts though, she wouldn’t like for anyone to think she’s ungrateful or pretentious, or just looking for problems when there are none.
Besides, she liked this new lifestyle. Although now they had to cook for two, wash more dishes, do the doubled amount of laundry, they did it in turns so it didn’t feel that much different from doing it on your own. Not to mention, there were so many fun activities and possibilities for living with your lover. From playing card and board games together to something as simple as drinking tea from matching mugs. Those kinds of moments felt the most special to Nami. They brought the warmth and comfort she has never had in her life. The closest she was to that was back in the days of living together with Aya and even then, it was not comparable.
Also, walking into the kitchen as she was doing right now, only to be met with her handsome lover wearing a silly pink apron that belonged to her instead of putting on his own was an irreplaceable experience for her every second morning.
“Pink suits you,” Nami chuckled, hugging Tsukasa from behind.
“Huh?” he asked, confused only to look down at what he was wearing, “Oh! I haven’t noticed I took yours, sorry, love. I woke up a bit later than usual. Guess I was still sleepy when I was putting it on, haha.”
“How dare you cause such thievery first thing in the morning!” the pianist tried to sound serious but ended up not being able to hold her laughter, “No but really, you probably look cuter than me in it.”
“Impossible,” Tsukasa retorted, moving away from the electric stove to put their eggs on the plates where neatly cut fresh vegetables and thin slices of bread were aesthetically placed. “But I wouldn’t mind seeing you in my apron so maybe that could be our little thing from now on?”
Once the plates were all ready, Nami took them and moved to the dining table behind the kitchen island to put them down while Tsukasa could take the apron off and put all the used kitchenware to the side so she could later on clean it all up. Doing different tasks was a part of their own perfect harmony after all.
“So, what’s on your today’s agenda again?” Nami asked once both of them were all set by the table, ready to eat their first meal of the day.
“Well, dad said someone wanted to give me a gig so that’s my next stop. Hopefully I will get to sort it out before the music classes, those kids get rowdy if you come even a few seconds too late. After that it’s a short trip to the studio, I have some fixing to do with one of the tracks and I should be back home.”
“Oh, a new gig sounds exciting,” Nami focused on one thing that piqued her interest, “Finally something out of your daily norm.”
“Hey, stability in life is good!” Tsukasa pouted though the brown-haired woman could tell he wasn’t seriously upset.
“I know, I know,” she chuckled. “Oh! Actually, could you stop by the store on your way back home? We’re almost out of black tea and I need cotton pads as well.”
“Can’t you just order that?”
It’s true that in recent culture barely anyone did the shopping personally. Most just ordered everything into their mail boxes but something about doing it on your own felt more personal and individual to Nami.
“I forgot you like your comfort,” she sighed, “Fine, I will go buy those after I’m done with my rehearsals.”
“Or… You could actually save some time ordering it online now so you won’t have to waste your time?”
“You know I like to do it on my own. Touch the product with my own hands and all of that before paying,” now it was a young woman’s turn to pout.
“So oldschool of you~” Tsukasa teased, “But if you really need to do it, then I can order food for us.”
“But it is my turn today,” Nami tried to argue.
“Nah, don’t be silly. If buying tea and pads on your own makes you happy, go for it. And what will make us both happy is to eat the food together immediately after you come back home.”
“You’re too good for me, you know?”
“And you’re too good for me.”
The couple smiled at each other, finally setting on finishing eating their still warm breakfast.
This was now how Hayashi Nami’s life looked like. Stable and peaceful. No disagreements, just simple adjustments to the significant other. It may feel boring at times, but it is a good life. Tsukasa was happy. She was happy.
She should have been happy…
