Chapter 5:

Accidental Girlfriend

The Nietzsche Protocol (TNP): The Cult

Shion's mind raced as she tried to rationalize Chizuru's statement. It rang through her head on repeat "since we have been dating awhile. Have been dating a while. Dating..." After a few seconds, the pieces started falling into place.

When Shion entered officer training school at the young age of 14, the youngest of any recruit in New Japan, Chizuru was in her 2nd and last year of training. Shion was assigned to Chizuru's squadron. As was customary, an entry-level physical fitness test was given to all new recruits with the chance for a prize if you beat your squad leader.

There was a reason that Chizuru was the leader of the squad. She was the best in fitness, physical combat, and even strategy. Super popular amongst all recruits because of her bubbly personality, Chizuru was drop dead gorgeous as well. She was also one of the few recruits that had actually seen combat as she served in the marines before coming to OTS which only reinforced her popularity.

At the time, Shion was even more obsessed with being the best than she was now. She immediately challenged Chizuru despite how the other recruits felt about someone challenging the school idol.

"Compete against me in everything, squad leader,” Shion seriously demanded.

Chizuru gave an incredulous glance at her, "Little girl. You are only 14. I would rather not embarrass a little girl in front of the whole squad."

Shion was seething with rage at this answer, so much that she bawled her fists so hard that blood began to drip onto the ground. Between gritted teeth Shion replied, "There is a reason why I am the youngest to be admitted to OTS in history. Now face me, unless YOU are scared of looking stupid in front of your friends! As for me, I don't have nor want any friends, so I have absolutely nothing to lose, but it's clear no one believes that I belong here. So come on, let's go, apparently I need to prove myself to everyone here."

After seeing how fervent Shion was, Chizuru agreed to take on Shion, "Don't cry when you lose."

Shion retorted, "I won’t be the one needing to cry"

The two went to the starting line for the first of the tests. The two-mile run. At the shot of the race gun, the two took off. Chizuru was running at about 50% speed and looked around but didn't see Shion, and thought, "I guess she was all talk after all". Then, she felt a rush of air move past her and saw Shion in a flat-out sprint flying past her.

"Shion is so stupid, she will run out of gas if she starts out that fast" thought Chizuru. And about a minute later as Chizuru finished her first lap of the 1/2 mile when she felt the brush of air move past her again.

Shion, barely breathless, shouted out, "What's wrong grandma, broke a hip and can't run anymore?"

Chizuru's face turned red, and she started running fast and began to catch up to Shion who was already a whole lap ahead. Shion saw Chizuru's approach and hit another gear running even faster than before. Chizuru got serious, but it was no good. As Shion crossed the finish line, the overhead speaker announced, "Course record set by Shion Tanaka at 7 min and 06 sec. Congratulations cadet."

Chizuru was stunned, "How the hell did you do that?"

Shion gave a huge peaceful smile and replied, "I gave everything that I had without worrying about having anything left like I have been every day" and she suddenly hit the ground. Shion fainted and was down for about three seconds, then shot back up ready for the next challenge.

Shion annihilated Chizuru in all over events, push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, and the 100m freestyle swim. The kicker was that at this point, Shion had yet to even start using nanites. All these impressive records she earned with own talent and ability.

After this, Chizuru's attitude changed towards Shion. She began to come over to Shion' s room with the excuse of studying but would just wind up hanging out. She even came to work out with Shion at the gym. When she graduated, Chizuru left a single rose and a box of chocolates with Shion and a card shaped like a heart. Shion had assumed it was an obligatory Valentine’s Day gift for the next squid leader.

After that it was years before the two saw each other again. Immediately after graduation Shion was deployed to an active battle where she became a decorated hero and earned her first promotion to first Lt. Seriously wounded, Shion was bed-bound in the hospital for a couple months, which was a very long time in the 22nd century.

Almost daily, Chizuru visited Shion and brought food or gifts. She would spend nearly a couple hours a day just talking and spending time together with Shion. Shion genuinely thought that Chizuru was just fulfilling her duty as a former superior. But thinking back on it, it did seem a little excessive for just an obligation.

Next, Shion went on a special investigation that took about two years to complete and led to the arrest and execution of several high-ranking officials. While Shion was gone, Chizuru wrote her letters and would call when possible. Out of guilt at the thought of Chizuru wasting her time writing to her, Shion replied to all of them.

Upon Shion's return, Chizuru was waiting for her with a home cooked meal in Shion's new apartment for just the two of them. After that she would stop by with food, drinks, or ask to go to eat together and pay the bill, stay the night (on the couch), and go to the gym together.

Shion was oblivious to everything involving social relationships. Since the age of 10, her whole life had been about her mission to infiltrate enemy military operations. She could not afford to make friends or even think about relationships because if someone got close, they would definitely realize that Shion was hiding something. That could be a lethal mistake.

Shion had genuinely believed that Chizuru was just becoming a good friend, but now everything made sense. When Chizuru had told Shion that she really liked her, it was a confession, not just something you say to a friend. Shion mindlessly replying that she also liked Chizuru was probably taken as a reciprocation of feelings. When Chizuru volunteered to escort Shion at the awards ceremony it wasn't because Shion didn't have an escort, it was because she felt it was her job. Her job as Shion's girlfriend not, a girl friend.

Now that Shion's cluelessness had gotten herself into this mess, she decided to take advantage of the situation. Someone around meant an alibi and maybe even someone to defend her if people started asking questions about her or digging into her business.

"Yeah Chizuru, it's been a while. You are always taking such good care of me. I just wanted to give you something in return. I'm sorry you didn't like it."

A large and carefree smile came across Chizuru's face. "Shion, this is the first time that you acknowledge my feelings out loud like this and the first time you used my first name without Lt. attached to it nicely, I forgive you this time, but as a punishment come with me after the ceremony without any questions, deal?"

Shion smirked, "Yeah, deal. I'm curious, when do you consider the first time that we went out together?”

Chizuru immediately replied, "Right before you went on your last mission, you told me that you liked me too."

Shion sighed; she knew it. "That's what I thought too."

Chizuru held out her hand, "Shall we get going?"

Shion smiled and grabbed her hand, even though this was fake for her, she was starting to enjoy the affection and attention from another human even if her feelings weren’t genuine.
