Chapter 9:

Shadows of Despair

Devil's Curse

The loss of Mei hung heavy over the academy, a pall of grief that seemed to sap the energy from everyone. Ryuji found himself often visiting the sakura tree where Mei was buried, the petals a silent reminder of her bravery and the love she never got to fully express. His friends, Haruto, Sora, and Akira, were equally distraught, their usual camaraderie replaced with a somber silence.

For days, the academy seemed frozen in time. Training sessions were subdued, and even the youngest recruits moved with a quiet reverence. Master Kenshin’s stern face bore the lines of sorrow, yet his eyes burned with a determination that inspired his students to continue.

As the days passed, the team tried to regain a semblance of normalcy. They resumed their training and took on small missions, tasks that seemed trivial compared to their recent ordeals but were essential for maintaining their skills and morale.

One afternoon, they were returning from a mission when the academy grounds erupted in chaos. Alarms sounded, and the air was thick with tension. Ryuji and his friends sprinted towards the source of the commotion, their hearts pounding with a mix of fear and adrenaline.

Explosions rocked the academy as the Kurei Kage, the infamous Dark Shadow demon group, launched a surprise attack. The air was filled with the acrid smell of smoke and the screams of the wounded. Students and instructors alike fought back, their swords clashing against the dark forces.

Ryuji’s team joined the fray, their swords flashing as they engaged the invaders. Haruto’s strength was a bulwark against the onslaught, while Sora and Akira moved with precision and grace, their blades cutting through the chaos.

In the midst of the battle, Master Kenshin appeared, his presence a beacon of hope. He moved with the fluidity and power of a seasoned warrior, his strikes decisive and devastating. But as the tide of battle seemed to turn, a dark figure emerged from the shadows—a man with an aura of menace and power.

“Kurei Kage,” Master Kenshin muttered, his eyes narrowing.

The leader of the attackers stepped forward, his voice a sinister growl. “You thought you could defeat the Demon Lord and face no consequences? You are mistaken.”

Before anyone could react, Master Kenshin’s form began to shift. His eyes glowed with an eerie light, and his body transformed, taking on the aspects of a wolf. His fur was dark as night, his fangs bared in a fearsome snarl. This was the true power of the demon curse he carried—the form of the wolf demon.

With a howl, Kenshin launched himself at the Kurei Kage, his movements a blur of lethal grace. The two clashed with a force that shook the very ground, their battle a terrifying display of power and ferocity. But the Kurei Kage were relentless, their numbers overwhelming even for the mighty Kenshin.

Ryuji and his friends fought desperately, but the Kurei Kage’s strength was too great. One by one, they were knocked to the ground, their bodies battered and bruised. Ryuji tried to rise, his vision swimming with pain, but a powerful kick sent him sprawling.

As he lay there, struggling to stay conscious, a new figure stepped into view. Kenjiro Ishikawa, the vice commander of the Kurei Kage, stood before him. His presence was commanding, his eyes sharp and calculating. He moved with a speed and precision that spoke of his curse—the power of the eagle demon.

Kenjiro crouched down, his face inches from Ryuji’s. His eyes narrowed as he noticed the claw marks on Ryuji’s chest. “Interesting,” he muttered, a hint of surprise in his voice. “These marks… we have seen them somewhere before.”

Ryuji tried to respond, but his vision darkened, and consciousness slipped away. The last thing he heard before succumbing to the darkness was Kenjiro’s chilling words. “You have fought bravely, but you are not yet ready. When the time comes, you will search for us. Remember my name: Kenjiro Ishikawa.”

The academy lay in ruins, the survivors battered and broken. The attack had left a mark that would not easily fade, a shadow of despair that loomed over them all. As the unconscious bodies of Ryuji and his friends were carried away to safety, the future seemed uncertain, the path ahead fraught with danger.
