Chapter 2:

Wrong person at the wrong time

Beyond Eternity

Both of them were once again outdoors, with the difference that this time, the feeling was unlike the previous one, the city was full of people and totally bustling with activity.

The suit that Eden was wearing, got separated from him as soon as they arrived and leaved the place, this fact was omitted by Lisa as she continued to be enchanted by the view of the city.

"We call this city "The Nexus", it is the arrival gate where we receive all the people that comes to this world, and the only place of permanence for us that we know, therefore, it is our home, and yours too."

Lisa did not ask anything at this point, she limited herself to listen to what Eden had to say, but she still deeply doubted if all this was real, it felt like one of those dreams that were hard to believe.

"Well, I would love to accompany you and show you the city around; but right now there is a very important event that I have to attend, feel free to walk around and meet the people, they are all very kind."

"Wait!"

Eden waved goodbye and set off. Lisa felt as if she had just lost her tour guide, but this was not going to stop her, she continued on her own, everybody that she would see was in such a hurry that no one noticed the new face in the city. Now being alone, she felt that the city was very hard to transit on her own and that she could easily get lost if she were to wander too far on her own, so she decided to approach and ask the closest person on what she should do.

"E-excuse me."

Very shyly, she tried to get the attention of one of the nearby persons, it was a man in his 30s, wearing what looked like a work attire, she could tell he was in charge of making sure everything were in its respective places for the previous event that Eden mentioned.

"Excuse me, can you help me?."

The man was so fixated on his work, that he didn't bothered to see who was talking to him.

"Yes, how can I help you?."

"I'm new around here and I don't know where to go."

The man, hearing this, still without looking back at her, asks her.

"Are you one of the newcomers?."

Lisa remembered that Eden mentioned this word before, so she affirmed.

"You're showing up just at the right time! , Come on, you have to get to the coliseum, and quickly! The event is about to begin. Follow me."

The person grabbed Lisa by her arm and started running towards the coliseum at full speed.

"WAIT!."

"There's no time to lose, you have to get there on time."

"What the hell is wrong with these people!"

All eyes were set on what resembled to be a Roman era coliseum, all seats fulls, lots of noise and full of expectation. Eden was one of the attendants, sitting in one of the middle rows as a spectator, his armor was right next to him, the same would be for the rest of the spectators.
Eden was one of the few who had his arms crossed and showed no exciment from the outside, constrasting with the rest that could barely keep still.

The coliseum spectators were divided based on their roles that they have in the city.
In the upper rows were the bigwigs, covered by a roof. In the middle rows were all the active military workforce, and in the lower rows were the rest of the people who engages in various other non lethal jobs.
Lisa arrived at the coliseum right at the entrance door to the arena along with many more people, all of them wearing more of these armors, some even with weapons.

"Phew, we made it in time, I wish you luck and I hope you get to be chosen."

As soon as them an said this to Lisa he left in a hurry.

"Wait!"

Lisa started to get quite scared, she was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"And where is your suit?."

Lisa turns around thinking that someone is talking to her. Only to realize she was right, one of the attendants who were waiting in line was asking her that question. She could tell from his face expression that he was quite temperamental guy, he was wearing a flashy red armor

"I-I was just passing by."

"Do you think you can go there and fight without a suit?."

Lisa was interrupted, she was clearly being verbally attacked.

"No, I..."

"Pff, doesn't matter, you're not going to last long out there anyway."

The boy puts on his helmet and leaves. Lisa was a little hurt by that, but it was going to be the least of her worries. The doors of the arena began to rise, letting light to be spread into the room that was quite dark and silent compared to the inside area of the Coliseum.

Everyone was getting ready to leave, Lisa was still at lost.

The arena was set to held a series of one on one fights as exhibition matches for public display, no lethal force was allowed to use. There was an announcer commentating the matches.

"Welcome everyone to the 10th "NEW ERA" competition.
We start off strongly with our first contestant! With incredible weight and brute force made to fear thanks to a propelled hammer, ladies and gentlemen, "Draigfest".
In the other coner, his opponent, wielding two daggers and a dizzying speed, the unmatched, "Vertige"."

The audience applauds and shouts showcasing their exciment for the match.

Lisa found herself to be the next one in line, knowing she would go next made her desperate to exit the place as fast as possible, but she was not able to find an exit.

The time ran out as the door to the arena opened for Lisa, with no other possible path to go she went in against her will. She was quite overwhelmed by the amount of spectators and noise that were present. The announcer couldn't find words to broadcast as there was no information about Lisa in their list of participants.

"Next one in line is..."
(Covers mic)
"Wait who is that, I don't have anything listed here about her.
Hmm.
Ladies and gentlemen it seems we have an unexpected participant.
We'll see what they have in store for us."

While Lisa was looking around to detail all of the Coliseum, the opposite corner door opened.
To her bad luck, it was the same guy that confronted Lisa just a moment ago.

As soon Lisa noticed it she knew it means trouble.

"From all the people that have gathered here, I get matched with you?!. You have to be kidding me."

The boy was visibly angry, convinced that he got the shortest stick at the end.

"I don't care, whoever it is, I'll give it my all."

The boy put on the armor, which was a glitter shining red armor, very eye catching

Meanwhile, Eden was looking from afar and was worried for Lisa, knowing that she just arrived there just a moment ago and had no reason to be there. He was hesitating to act but also to remain still . He clenched his fists around his shoulders and showed a concerned expression.

"Let's get this over with"

Said the guy in red armor while dashing forward at full speed with his armor boosters, ready to hit his opponent, he was decided to do whatever it takes to be on the spotlight.

Just a few centimeters away from him to make contact with Lisa, she closed her eyes and looked away as a reflex, she heard a strong clashing sound, but she didn't feel anything got to hit her, after a few seconds passed, she opened her eyes to see that among a small curtain of dust that was slowly fading away. When the dust dissipated. There was Eden holding up the boy's hand with his own to prevent him to attack Lisa. The boy said to him in a very angry tone.

"What are you doing?."

"I could ask you the same."

"I'm doing what I need to do, now, let me go or you'll get in my way too."

"It goes against the rules to hit participants that are in no capability of fighting."

"Then why is she here!?"

"I don't know, but she clearly isn't mean to be here, so, lower your arm and go away."

The boy grumbled, he retired his arm aggresively and turned away.

There was a deafening silence among the spectators and the commenter. Nobody knew exactly what was going on but two things were clear for everyone, the first one being that there was someone new that got dragged into the event, and the second being that Eden was in the middle of it.

One of the spectators at the higher rows stood up, they were barely visible by the contrast of the shadow they were in and the direct sun that was reflecting on the arena.
They spoke directly to Eden. Their voice resonated in the entire arena.

"Eden, care to explain this?"

Eden turned his head to see Lisa on his back, who was afraid. Then turned back to give an answer.

"I apologize, she arrived here today, she was not meant to be here"

"Are you implying that we received a newcomer without our knowledge, and that they managed to sneak their way into the colisseum?"

"I am as surprised as you, I found her at the outskirts, I lead her to the city entrance, I do not know how she got here."

The imposing figure whispered to the others next to it.

"Very well, we'll believe your testimony...for now, but she can't be roaming around by herself. She, as everybody who presented themself here today, needs to be under a preceptor guidance. Tell me, who will take such responsability?."

Lisa noticed how Eden's corporal language showed how hesitant he was to answer back.
He closed his eyes for a moment, then opened them while saying.

"I will".

"Then it's settled. You'll be her preceptor and will take responsibility for her actions.
In the meantime, we'll uncover the reason of her presence here."

After it, the announcer gave closure to the exhibition matches, now it was time for the people at the rows to find a candidate they wish to take in under their care.

All the participants stood in a row, they were being selected one by one by the people on the crow

Everyone got matched, except for the guy with the red armor, he was left unpicked since no one could see his potential, he was absolutely frustrated.

Eden looked to Lisa.

"Well, it looks like we'll be together from now and on."

And thus, the event came to an end.
