Chapter 249:

Diederich's Arena der Blitzhölle

En Passant Grandmaster

In Berlin, German empire of Prussia, a young, well built man with short blonde hair and a face covered in scars stared gleefully down at a chessboard.

"Hurry up n' move. Übel tires of waiting," a large obese middle-aged man grumbled.

"Oi, oi, I thought geezers like you were supposed to be the patient type."

"Ube cannot wait more. Übel wants to eat nacho fries."

"Then I'll set the clock to 3 minutes and we'll begin."

The young man was Diederich von Richthofen, Red Reaper's grandson as well as a grandmaster. He was far more arrogant and cocky, but that came with his youthful age of just 18. Though like his grandfather, he possessed a strong body and mind.

"For this, I'll open by hurling a Pole at you," Diederich sneered as he moved his pawn to b4.

"Why would you play a Polish opening?" Übel grumbled as he moved his pawn to d5.

"I care nor what the opening's called. Though I do tend to favor those that are named after the Fatherland and it's people," Diederich stated as he moved his bishop to b2.

"Hmm, so that's why you were goading Übel into playing the German defense," Übel nodded as he moved his queen to d6.

"Perhaps, but sadly that's not a good move for Black as it gives White a slight advantage, as such," Diederich stated as he moved his pawn to a3.

"Übel cannot see it," Übel grumbled as he moved his pawn to a5.

"Then maybe comb away the block of hair concealing your eyes, old man," Diederich sneered as he moved his knight to f3.

"And how can you see with that eyepatch?" Übel asked as he moved his bishop to d7.

Diederich chuckled and pulled back his eyepatch, revealing his scarred left eye beneath. "Damn thing could never see properly in the first place. But thanks to the DESPERs, it can now see the true battlefield we duel upon!" Diederich grinned as he slammed his bishop down on e5.

Like all members of the Prussian army, he was a Desperado with a DESPER. While he couldn't challenge his comrades to DESPER matches or activate his DESPER before the final round in normal tournaments, that didn't stop him from imagining what those battles could be like. And thanks to winning a DESPER match, he had been able to do just that via his left eye. It was worth noting that only he could se the battlefield if the match wasn't a DESPER match, meaning to all onlookers as well as his opponent, he was just some crazy chuuni.

As for his ideal battlefield, dark cloudy skies with lightning crackling and a giant chessboard atop one of the clouds. Though since this was a non-DESPER match, only he could see the battlefield, and all Übel could see was his boss' grandson being weird again.

"So now we're in your "Arena der Blitzhölle", ja?" Übel groaned as he moved his queen to a6.

"Yes, and now we duel!" Diederich maniacally grinned as his knight encased itself in lightning and charged for c3.

In Diederich's vision, Übel appared standing at the other end of the chessboard, merely extending his hand forward to send the pawn to c6. Diderich meanwhile zapped around the board enshrouded in lightning, sending blast at his pawn to send it to e4. Übel on the other hand monotonously raised his arm as his queen slowly moved to a7.

"Fool! Now I can unleash my rook!" Diederich grinned as he slammed down on b1 holding a giant rook.

"And Übel just captures," Übel grumbled as he captured the pawn at b4 with his a-pawn.

As if it was a direct blow to he himself, Diederich recoiled, flying back through the air and wiping the imaginary blood off his lip. "Not bad Übel, but no I counter!" he declared as he sent his a-pawn hurling into the pawn at b4, sending it into Übel and causing him to spin around in the air before landing with a thud on his back.

Though in reality, Übel was seated the whole time, perfectly fine. Though much to his displeasure, Diederich appeared more like he was spazzing out.

"The officials and your opponents complain about your delusions," Übel grumbled as he moved his knight to f6.

"THEY ARE NOT DELUSIONS! It's real battle!" Diederich glared as he slammed his e-pawn into the pawn at d5.

"Maybe when the DESPER is active, but everythime it isn't, it's just you spazzing out like a loon," Übel grumbled as he captured the pawn at d5 with his knight, causing Diederich to jolt his head back as if he'd been slugged in the face.

However, he began grinning and stared Übel down. "Übel, it's ironic I can see so much more than you considering I have just one normal eye. NOW BEGINS YOUR DOWNFALL!" he declared as he hopped atop his knight and rode it, plowing down the knight at d5 with it.

Übel let out a sigh and captured the knight at d5 with his c-pawn, causing Diederich to fall off said knight and roll to the ground. However, he got up immediately and directed his rook to a1, prompting Übel to move his knight to a6.

Diederich scoffed at the defense and moved his pawn to b5, causing Übel to bite his lip and move his pawn to f6. Diederich was now free to levitate his pawn in the air and send it crashing down, destroying the knight at a6 with an explosion of lightning. Though he himself soon went flying as elsewhere on the board, Übel captured the bishop at e5 with his f-pawn.

"Heh, YOU FELL FOR MY TRAP!" Diederich laughed as he stopped his ragdolling and sent his knight charging for e5, destroying the pawn that was there.

Übel sighed and captured the pawn at a6 with his b-pawn, however, Diederich didn't so much as flinch this time. "Hmm? Not going to spazz out?"

"Nein, THAT BLOW DIDN'T EVEN STING!" Diederich maniacally shouted as he sent the pawn at a6 flying with his rook.

Übel froze and gritted his teeth as due to the bishop stealthily protecting the rook, he couldn't capture it, so he had to move his queen to b7. But now, Diederich could move his queen to a1, setting up a battering ram, which could lead to an instant mate if Übel wasn't careful. While he did make the best move of moving his rook to b8, his position was still completely lost.

Diederich could sense it and moved his bishop out to d3, while Übel opted to try and escape by moving his pawn to g6.

"You trying to get out with a castle? You still have to move your bishop, and queen," Diederich sneered as he landed on a7 and aimed his rook like a bazooka at the adjacent queen.

"Then Übel will do ze latter. Check," Übel declared as he moved his queen to b1.

Diederich froze in horror for a second before bursting into laughter. "What a foolish sacrifice!" he sneered as he captured the queen at b1 with his queen.

"Nein! For now you are doomed. Check once more, herr prinz!" Übel glared as he captured the queen at b1 with his rook.

Diederich let out a pained scream as he slowly began to fly backwards, however, he stopped and slammed down on e2, holding his king. But now Übel could take his other rook, however...

"What's wrong? Not going to take my rook?"

Übel clicked his tongue as his hand trembled. If he did capture the rook at h1, it would lead to a forced mate with Rook a8, check, bishop c8, and finally rook captures c8, mate. Thus, he opted to instead retreat his rook to b8. But that led to it's own problems as now Diederich could capture the bishop at d7 with his knight, forcing Übel to move his rook to d8.

"A shame you missed your chance, now the rooks shall seal your doom. Check," Diederich sneered as he galloped his knight to f6 and pointed a gun at Übel's king.

While it was tempting to just capture the knight with the e-pawn, that would lead to Übel losing a rook, and the game much faster. Thus, he made the only other possible move, king to f7.

Diederich didn't let up though and captured the pawn at d5 with his knight, prompting Übel to capture said knight with his rook. However, Diederich didn't flinch, and merely hovered above the board before raising his hand into the air, smiling as his bishop slowly moved to c4.

Übel let out a frustrated groan as he moved his pawn to h5. "No, my rook is pinned, and I can't even defend it with my pawn, since that's pinned too!"

"And now, I can show you the true power of the rooks," Diederich snickered as his rook moved to b1.

Now Übel was the one clinging to desperation as he moved his king to f6. But his will began to waver as Diederich sent his bishop hurdling into the rook at d5, destroying it with an explosion of lightning. While Übel could now move his pawn to e6, threatening the bishop at d5, it became an empty threat as the pawn was soon pinned thanks to Diederich's rook moving to b6.

Out of options, Übel let out a frustrated groan as he moved his rook to h6, beginning Diederich's merciful assault. First he sent his rook flying into the pawn at e6, destroying it and forcing Übel to move his king to g5. But then came a check from the rook moving to e5, and rather than play king f6 which would keep the game going, Übel moved his king to f4, hastening his demise to mate in 3.

"And now your doom is sealed. So where do you wish to die?" Diederich sneered as he landed on e4 with rook in hand, pointing it at Übel's king.

"Ugh, Übel doesn't care," Übel grumbled as he moved his king to g5.

"Death by rook, then. I couldn't ask for a better ending!" Diederich grinned as he tossed his pawn down on h4.

"What do you mean?" Übel grumbled as he moved his king to f6.

"I mean that the rook shall deal the death blow," Diederich grinned as he landed on f7 and brandished his rook bazooka. "CHECKMATE!" he shouted at the rook blasted away Übel's king, and sent Übel himself glying away like a ragdoll, in Diederich's imagination that is.

In reality, Übel was sinking his head into his hands as he sat at the board and stared at the checkmate before him. Thanks to the bishop at d5 protecting the rook at f7, Übel couldn't capture the rook, meaning Diederich had won the game in dramatic fashion.

"Übel would enjoy these practice sessions more if you didn't spaz out all the time," Übel grumbled as Diederich put his eyepatch back on.

"It's not spazzing out, it's bringing the heat of battle to life."

"Or as the Japanese would say, it's being a "chuuni"," Übel grumbled as Diederich walked away.
