Chapter 12:

Ritual of Shadows

Devil's Curse

After acquiring the power of the demon Kuro, Ryuji’s aura surged, creating a palpable wave of dread that rippled through the ranks of the lesser demons around him. The low-ranked demons, feeling the oppressive weight of his newfound power, cowered in fear. The air crackled with dark energy as Ryuji’s transformation took its toll.

Suddenly, Ryuji collapsed, his body giving way under the immense strain of wielding Kuro’s formidable power. His teammates, eyes wide with concern, rushed to his side. They lifted his unconscious form and carried him to a nearby rest area, their faces etched with worry and confusion.

As Ryuji lay recovering, the scene shifted to his teammates preparing for the ritual to receive their own demon curses. The atmosphere was heavy with anticipation and fear. In the center of a darkened chamber, a small bonfire crackled, surrounded by an eerie arrangement of demon skulls and other macabre items—bones, hair, and claws. The air was thick with the scent of burning herbs and the low hum of ancient chants.

Elder Rayas, a figure of ancient authority and knowledge, stood solemnly beside the fire. In his hands, he held a clay pot, its surface covered with a grotesque leaf and secured with a black rope. With deliberate movements, Rayas untied the rope and lifted the leaf, revealing the pot’s contents: the blood of the current demon lord, a viscous, dark fluid that seemed to pulse with a life of its own.

Rayas dipped a small knife into the blood, heating it in the flames until the blade glowed red-hot. He called for one of Ryuji’s teammates to step forward. The first to accept the challenge was Akira, a brave but apprehensive young warrior.

Rayas chanted ancient incantations, his voice a low, rhythmic murmur. He then instructed Akira to grasp the scalding knife and pierce it into his own heart. Akira’s face contorted in agony as he plunged the blade into his chest, a guttural scream escaping his lips. The searing pain was unbearable, and the wound immediately turned black, dark aura leaking from it.

The room fell silent as a high-ranked demon, drawn by the aura, emerged from the shadows. This demon, named Arakaza, chose Akira as his vessel, imbuing him with a powerful curse. Arakaza’s curse granted Akira immense strength and endurance, allowing him to summon

spectral chains that could bind enemies or crush them with immense force.

One by one, the rest of Ryuji’s teammates underwent the harrowing ritual:- Yumi was chosen by the demon Kagutsuchi, gaining control over hellfire. Her curse allowed her to summon and manipulate intense flames that could incinerate anything in their path. The fire she wielded was not ordinary; it burned with a blue hue, signifying its otherworldly origin and incredible heat.- Takeshi was marked by Tsukiyomi, granting him powers of illusion and shadow. Takeshi could blend into the darkness, becoming nearly invisible, and create convincing illusions to confuse and mislead enemies. His curse also allowed him to manipulate shadows, using them as both a  weapon and a shield.- Hana received the curse of Fujin, bestowing her with mastery over wind and storms. She could summon powerful gusts of wind to knock back foes, create protective barriers of swirling air, and even call down lightning strikes in battle. Her connection to the wind also enhanced her speed and agility, making her a formidable opponent. Haruto received the curse from Raijin (the demon of thunder).

As the rituals concluded, the scene shifted back to Ryuji. He awoke, groggy but alert, realizing that he had overexerted himself using Kuro’s power. He understood that to wield Kuro’s strength effectively, he needed to control at least 20%-30% of the demon’s power.

Determined, Ryuji made his way to an open training ground. He closed his eyes, focusing inward, and began to draw on Kuro’s power. Gradually, he reached the desired threshold, his body transforming in response. Two small horns protruded from his head, a half-mask covered his mouth and nose, and his samurai suit shimmered with crimson sparks and demonic symbols. His katana glowed with a crimson red flame, signifying his control over Kuro’s formidable strength.

As Ryuji adjusted to his new form, the watchtower demons sounded the alarm—a deep, resonant horn that signaled the arrival of someone, or something, of great importance. The academy fell into a tense silence, everyone straining to see who or what was coming.

Ryuji, standing in the midst of the open ground, felt the weight of impending events. He tightened his grip on his katana, ready to face whatever challenge awaited, as the echoes of

the horn faded into the night.

In the stillness, the aura of Kuro within Ryuji surged once more, a reminder of the dark power he now wielded. The demons around him watched with a mix of fear and respect, recognizing the potent force that had been unleashed. Ryuji’s heart pounded in his chest as he prepared for what lay ahead, knowing that his journey had only just begun.

His teammates, now marked by their own curses, stood ready beside him, their expressions a blend of determination and anxiety. They had survived the ritual and gained incredible powers, but the true test of their strength and unity was yet to come.

As the night deepened, the sense of foreboding grew. Ryuji and his friends knew that the arrival signaled by the horn could bring new allies or deadly foes. They could only wait and see, their minds steeled for whatever fate had in store for them.
