Chapter 5:
Fragments of Eternity
The clock struck midnight when Lara and Dante left the café. The night air was heavy, filled with doubt. The silence between them spoke louder than any words, and they both knew that the decision to work together could have irreversible consequences.
“Are you sure about this?” Dante asked, looking around, as if expecting to be followed.
Lara looked at him, and for a second her eyes shone with a mix of anger and determination.
“I have no choice. If I don’t do this, no one will.”
Dante took a deep breath. He couldn’t deny that there was a knot forming in his stomach. It was clear that they were playing with fire, and with every step they took, they were getting closer to being burned.
As they walked down the deserted street, Dante felt his pulse vibrate. He glanced discreetly at the communication device built into his watch. A notification. Urgent message. His heart raced. If they were from the agency, his entire life could be at risk. Surreptitiously, he checked the screen.
“You’ve been compromised. They’re after you.”
Dante stopped, feeling the world around him spin. His instincts screamed at him to get out of there immediately, but he had to stay calm. He couldn’t let Lara see that something was wrong. At least, not yet.
“Are you okay?” she asked, frowning.
Dante shook his head.
“Yeah…” He took a deep breath, trying to hide his panic. “I just need some air.”
Lara watched him for a moment, suspicious, but didn’t insist. She knew that what they were about to do was dangerous, but something about his behavior bothered her. Was Dante hiding something from her?
They walked to a dimly lit alley, where Lara had left her motorcycle. She put on her helmet, handing the other one to Dante. When he took it, their eyes met once more.
“This is going to be dangerous,” Lara said, her voice more serious than before.
“I won’t protect you if you can’t handle the pressure.”
Dante tried to smile, but his chest was tight. The message was still pulsing through his mind. You’ve been compromised. He got on his bike and tried to push away the fear that was consuming him.
As Lara accelerated, cutting through the dark streets of the city, Dante knew he was now playing both sides. He had betrayed the trust of those who employed him for a greater cause, but how long could he hide it?
The adrenaline of being next to Lara, someone who lived in the shadows, increased the tension with each turn. The cold wind hit his face, but it wasn’t enough to dispel the growing weight of paranoia. The bike slid down a more remote street and stopped in front of an abandoned warehouse.
“Here?” Dante asked, feeling a chill. The place seemed deserted, but he knew that in this world, nothing was what it seemed.
Lara nodded, turning off the bike and getting off nimbly. She looked around, making sure no one had followed them, before opening a side door with a magnetic key. The sound of the heavy door closing behind them echoed through the empty space.
“Welcome to my office,” Lara said, with a touch of sarcasm, as she turned on the lights, revealing a makeshift room with monitors, maps, and cables everywhere.
Dante looked around, surprised by the amount of cutting-edge equipment she had here. This was no simple hacker's hideout. She was prepared for something big.
“This is where the magic happens,” she said, sitting down in front of a desk full of devices.
He took a deep breath, knowing that from that moment on, there would be no turning back. He was in it up to his neck, and with each new discovery, the danger would only increase.
“What now?” he asked, trying to keep his voice steady.
Lara began connecting the devices, preparing to access another batch of information she had hacked at the event the night before.
“Now we find out how far this conspiracy goes,” she said, without taking her eyes off the screens. “And how to bring the entire system down.”
Dante remained silent, watching her work. But his mind was racing. With each passing minute, he knew he was closer to being discovered. And if they really were after him, how long would he have until they were found?
He slowly approached, leaning against the table next to her.
“Lara, what if… they already know?” he asked, unable to hide his concern.
She stopped typing, her narrowed eyes fixed on the screen, before slowly turning to him.
“Do you think they know?” she asked, her voice now cold, full of suspicion.
The silence between them was sharp. Dante felt the cold sweat on the back of his neck. The tension between them was palpable, and he knew any wrong word could seal his fate.
— I’m not sure… — he said, his voice hesitant. — But we’re dealing with something big, and I don’t know how far they’ll go to stop us.
Lara stared at him for a long moment, her eyes assessing every micro expression. She stood up slowly, crossing her arms.
— If you’re hiding something from me, Dante… — she said, moving dangerously closer. — This could end very badly for you.
He took a deep breath, feeling the weight of the threat. He was trapped in a web of lies, and with every move, the webs seemed to tighten even more.
— I’m not hiding anything, Lara — he lied, trying to maintain control. — I’m with you.
She held his gaze for a few more seconds before turning and going back to work. But Dante knew that, from that moment on, Lara wouldn’t let him out of her sight. And with danger approaching from both sides, he would need to be more careful than ever.
