Chapter 4:

Chapter 4

Remember Death

“First thing we want to do here is create an account for you, ok. So, when you get to the log in step, underneath the password bar there should be a create an account button; Tap on that.”

I tapped on the small, highlighted, blue text underneath the password bar. It brought me to a similar page, except this one had more text boxes, labeled with various other things. Mr. Hato pulled out his phone and went to a website called something along the lines of Sling. He started to make an account for me.

“What would you like your e-mail to be named?”

“Ummmm- I’m not quite sure. Uh -Maybe dte61206. Yeah, I like that.”

“Ok then, your e-mail will be dte61206@slmail.com from now on. Now type it in into the email bar at the top.”

I typed out my e-mail into the top bar and moved down to the second box.

“You’re going to want to create a password for your account, so pick something you can remember, as well as something that isn’t too obvious. You don’t have to tell me.”

“Ok.”

I tried to think of something that no one else would know along with something that was relatively rememberable. Maybe the name of the orphanage, no too obvious; what about the day In was adopted, no, I don’t want Mr. Hato to be able to get into my phone. Ah, the day of my parent’s death, no one else knew it and it would be stuck ion my mind for the rest of my life. 04/16/10. My password would be 41610dm.

“I created a password Mr. Hataru.”

“Ok, now you’re going to want to retype the password in the next box to confirm it.”

There were two more boxes left after my password, First name and last.

“Confirmed the password.”

“Good. You can handle the rest, correct?”

“Yeah, I think so.”

“Wonderful, let me know if you need any more help.”

Mr. Hato then left into the bigger room that I had seen before.

I proceeded with the setup, First Name: Dante. Last name: Shi. Gender: Male etc. Now that the setup was done, I wanted to text Malcolm, but I wasn’t quite sure how.

“Mr. Hataru,” I called.

“Yes, what is it, Dante.”

“I want to text Malcolm, what’s his phone number?”

“Hold on, let me look. Uhmmm its 619-752-1026 if I remember correctly.”

“K, Thanks.”

I typed the phone number into an app on my phone called contacts. I also added Malcolm’s name. I decided to send a text.

*Text Conversation*

“Hey Malcolm, how are you.” 3:28

“Who dis.” 3:34

“Dante, I couldn’t say goodbye to you at the orphanage because you were unconscious.” 3:36

“Oh shit, hey. Yeah, I’m good tho my head still hurts a bit.” 3:37

“Good, I was worried.” 3:37

“Lol, u rlly think some ahole like Blake was gonna put me away that easy.” 3:37

“No, I guess. What’s lol mean by the way.” 3:38

Malcolm had another friend who was a tech junkie so I figured he would text like this.

“oh, forgot ur not up to date on slang. Uh it means laugh out loud.” 3:38

“Oh, Alright.” 3:38

“Shit, gtg Dante, my day for laundry and u know how Dawkins gets abt that shit.” 3:38

“Yeah lol, see ya.” 3:38

I think I used lol right there. Eh doesn’t matter. I thought for a moment about the device I was given. I was blown away by the capabilities of my phone. It could do so much, on such a tiny little brick. I could text Malcolm, I could play games, although I hadn’t quite figured out the app store yet, best of all I could look up whatever I wanted on the internet and have whatever I wanted to know in the blink of an eye. Anyways I was a little tired, so I decided to go to sleep.

***

I woke up what seemed to be not that much later, starving, so I went to go grab some food from the kitchen. I opened my door and Mr. Hato was making breakfast. I was confused seeing as I had only been asleep a couple hours, or had I. I didn’t check my phone when I woke up so I had no clue what time it was. I went back into my room and grabbed my phone off the nightstand and to my surprise It was 8:21 am the next day. Shocked I went back to the kitchen where Mr. Hato was still cooking breakfast. It smelled amazing.

“Oh, Hello Dante, tired were we?”

He laughed.

“Yeah, I guess so, I was shocked when I looked at my phone and it was 8:15 am.”

“What time did you fall asleep yesterday, I came to get you at six for dinner and you were out cold.”

“The last thing I remember doing was texting Malcolm at like 3:30ish.”

“Damn that’s like 15 hours. Makes sense yesterday was a long day for you.”

“Yeah.”

“Anyways want some eggs.”

“What kind?”

“Scrambled, with some cheese on top.”

“Definitely, Thank you.”

Mr. Hato cut the pan of eggs in half with a spatula and put one half on a paper plate for me. They were a sunny yellow with what looked like white cheddar on top. It smelled amazing.

“They smell amazing.”

“Oh, Thank you.”

Mr. Hato then got up and went over to a small cabinet by the fridge. He opened the door and grabbed a small bottle filled with red liquid.

“What’s that?” I asked.

“Hot sauce, you want some.”

“For what?”

“What else, your eggs.”

I hadn’t never even thought of putting hot sauce on eggs, let alone tried it, but figured what could hurt if I did taste it.

“Uhhh--.”

“Here how about this, I’ll let you have a bite of mine with some hot sauce on it, and if you like it, put some on yours, if not life moves on.”

“Alright.”

He drizzled some hot sauce over his eggs and chunked off a bit, then put it on my plate. I picked up my fork, stabbed the chunk of egg and ate it. The flavors combining in my mouth was something that I had never imagined before. A savory and slightly sweet egg, combined with the tangy, spicy hot sauce was an amazing combination.

“Man, that’s good, hand me the bottle.”

“See, my friends in Japan think I’m so weird for it.”

“There Missing out,” I said mid bite.

“Agreed.”

We didn’t talk much the rest of breakfast, and just ate our eggs. The eggs were better than anything I ever had at the orphanage, so I ate them fairly quickly. Mr. Hato took slightly longer to eat.

“Dante why don’t you go get changed, then we can go out and run a couple errands.”

“Uhh- Mr. Hato.”

“Yeah, what.”

“I only brought the set of clothes I’m wearing right now.”

“Oh, well that is an issue. Well uh- go throw on some deodorant then and the first thing we’ll do is go buy you some new clothes.”

“K.”

I went into my room to grab my deodorant in the small bag I had brought with me. Threw some on and put on a pair of socks. I walked back outside, but Mr. Hato wasn’t there, so I figured he had gone to take a shower and change. There were a couple dishes piled in the sink, and seeing as Mr. Hataru had cooked me breakfast, I decided to do them for him. By the time he came back out, the dishwasher was running, and I was on the couch looking at my phone.
