Chapter 261:
En Passant Grandmaster
As the round began, the matchups were as follows, the masked man and Retskcirb were sitting out the round while Ginji was on board 1 against Skaberghast, Okisato on board 2 against Jern, Ryonosuke on board 3 against Sommer, and Zago on board 4 against Wakuta.
The game on board 2 started off simple enough with Okisato moving his pawn to e4 and Jern moving his pawn to c5. But knowing Okisato, the game was about to take an insane turn, and sure enough, king e2 was on the board.
Skaberghast glanced over and smirked while Jern stared in confusion for a bit before scowling. "That bastard making light of me? I said I hate this cuz there's too much thinking, but I ain't no idiot!" he thought as he moved his pawn to d5.
Okisato remained calm and moved his pawn to d3 as Jern followed up by moving his knight to c6. This gave Okisato the chance to capture the pawn at d5, but then...
"Check! See I got smarts, "grandmaster"," Jern sneered as he moved his knight to d4.
Okisato didn't care and moved his king back to e1, allowing Jern to capture the pawn at d5 with his queen. Okisato simply moved his knight to c3, prompting Jern to deliver another check by moving his queen to e6. But yet again, Okisato effortlessly thwarted it by moving his c-knight to e2.
"Tch, bastard's annoying," Jern though as he unknowingly blundered by moving his pawn to b5.
Now Okisato could go on the attack, starting by moving his pawn to c3. Much to his joy, Jern didn't make the only viable move of knight f5, instead going knight c6. The humiliating defeat was a go.
Okisato continued the pace by moving his bishop to e3, causing Jern to think for a while before moving his queen to f5. Okisato then moved his pawn to d4 as Jern brought his knight out to f6.
"Well look at you developing pieces. But it's too late," Okisato thought as he captured the pawn at c5 with his d-pawn.
Jern scowled and moved his pawn to e5, giving Okisato the chance to play knight g3, sending the queen to e6. But that wasn't even the true point of the plan, for after Okisato captured the pawn at b5 with his bishop, Jern began to get nervous.
"Shit, he pinned the knight, and I can't take the bishop... Guess I'll fix that!" he thought as he moved his pawn to a6.
The threat was empty as Okisato simply slid his bishop to a4, leading Jern to make the move of bishop e7 in desperation. But it was when Okisato moved his knight to f5 that Jern really got angry.
At first he thought it was a free knight, but he stopped himself just before he touched a piece. "Shit, I take it, he captures my knight... and gets a rook! Fucking bastard, I'll kill him," Jern thought as he moved his king to f8.
The commentators had quickly taken notice of the game and focused in on it.
"So let me get this straight, he responded to a Sicilian with a King David's, and now he's winning!? This is insane!" Danny cried.
"It truly is a spectacle. Aside from that king e2 play, Okisato Tanabe is playing perfectly," Nancy replied.
"Speaking of perfect, the last move, king f8 was Jern's best move. But if Okisato finds knight d6- And he just did! Jern's in for a world of hurt now!"
Indeed Jern was in for a world of hurt, especially after he worsened his position by moving his bishop to d7. Now Okisato could move his bishop to b3, forcing Jern's queen to g4. Okisato promptly captured the queen at g4 with his queen, and even though Jern captured his queen with his knight, it mattered not as Okisato could play the crushing knight capture f7.
"Damn bastard! He wants to trade, I'll trade! We'll go to an endgame brawl!" Jern thought as he captured the bishop at e3 with his knight.
"Guess he never learned not to trade when you're losing," Okisato thought as he captured the knight at e3 with his f-pawn.
Jern glared in frustration and moved his rook to g8 while Okisato tightened the screws and moved his rook to d1. Jern tried to create counter-play by moving his bishop to e8, but Okisato simply moved his knight to d6. Rather than capture the knight, Jern opted instead to move his bishop to h5, threatening the rook.
"Oh no, my rook... Oh wait, I got a knight," Okisato thought as he moved hos knight to e2.
Jern ruffled his hair in frustration and moved his rook to h8, causing Okisato to stare in confusion.
"Wow, you really are lost. Check," he shrugged as he moved his rook to f1.
"I ain't lost, I'm frying my brain, dammit!" Jern fumed as he moved his bishop to f7.
As soon as his hand was off the piece, a maniacal grin formed on Okisato's face.
"Whoa, whoa! You seeing this Nancy!?" Danny cried.
"I am, and I think he sees it too. It's mate in two!"
Okisato indeed saw it and wasted no time in capturing the bishop at f7 with his rook.
"Idiot, I just capture- ...!"
Jern went pale as he realized there was only one legal move he could make, king g8.
"Well whatever," he scoffed as he made his move, unaware that his doom was eminent.
"I bet it's going to haunt you knowing you can't capture this rook."
"Huh? The hell are you-"
"Checkmate, you lose," Okisato snickered as he moved his rook to f6, putting it directly in line of the pawn and bishop. But since his bishop had the king in it's sights and Jern couldn't do a thing, it was checkmate and Okisato had won the game.
Jern's mouth hung down in disbelief as he began to tremble. "Fu- Fucking bastard. That's just too damn evil!" he fumed as he got up and stormed away.
"Kahkahkah! Dumbass Jern lost. Now it's all on me to win!" Sommer thought as he made his move.
"Oh, I see. Checkmate," Ryonosuke nodded, sending Sommer into a state of shock.
Now down by two, Denmark would need to win on the remaining boards to equalize, but after Zago pulled off a win, it was over.
"Welp, no use playing on. Wanna draw?" Skaberghast asked.
Ginji smirked and accepted the draw. The final score was Japan, 3.5 to Denmark's 0.5. The men's team had won their first round, but this was only the beginning.
