Chapter 267:
En Passant Grandmaster
Mimoko had long since captured the pawn at e5 with her rook, meaning the ball was now in Collette's court. However, her position was mate in 7 at best, meaning a resignation was on the table. Pride however prevented Collette from resigning, though her will was beginning to waver as she struggled to capture the pawn at e2 with her queen.
Now Mimoko could capture said queen with her rook, forcing the king away to g1. And after Mimoko followed up with knight e3, Collette was at a loss on what to do next, yet she couldn't resign. Not because she refused to yield to someone she despised, but also because she refused to be the reason her team would lose. Thus, she was living on the increments, hoping she could at least make the time control to delay her inevitable defeat.
Bishop d6, queen captures d6, a4, rook e1, check, and finally king h2 and the time control had been achieved. The only problem was that after knight e2, Collette had only one move left before she was mated. Taking advantage of the additional 30 minutes she now had, she cried, and cried, and cried.
Fifi meanwhile had taken notice of Collette's plight, yet there was little she could do. Her position was drawish at best and even if she won, Collette would still lose and Japan would win the match 3-1.
"Collette... I'm sorry. I know it won't be much, but once I make the time control, I'll offer up a draw. That way, we'll at least have some points on the board, and I'll be the one that loses us the match," Fifi thought.
However, on the 40th move, Fifi made a devastating blunder. She saw it, the commentators saw it, Collette saw it, Mimoko saw it, all spectating the match saw it, and most importantly, Azenira saw it. With a glint in her eye, Azenira pounced on the blunder, now flipping the tables completely on Fifi. Mate was still ways away, but Fifi knew that now there was no hope in a draw.
"Collette... I'm sorry.... I'M SORRY! I blew it. I wanted to try and help, but I just made it worse," Fifi thought as tears began streaming down her face.
As her makeup began to smear, Fifi smiled and faced Azenira. "I resign."
Collette trembled in shock as Fifi shot her a tearful smile before getting up. While Fifi wanted to run off and cry, she couldn't leave Collette. Thus, she stood trembling in tears.
Fleaur attempted to get up, but Daria stopped her. "No, she's not asking for you to comfort her just yet. Don't jump until it's over."
Fleaur clenched her fist, but adhered to Daria's advice.
Collette meanwhile couldn't hold it in, but at the very least, mustered what little will she had to move her pawn to a5. "4-0... We're going to lose 4-0... Aha... Ahahaha."
"My apologies, but that's just the way it is. Checkmate, you played a fair game," Mimoko stated as she captured the rook at g3 with her queen, winning the game.
Collette didn't even bother with the scoresheets, storming away in tears with Fifi close behind.
"My apologies, I thought the two would comfort each other on the spot, I should have let you join them sooner," Daria sighed.
"No, Fifi's dam would have burst if I waltzed up, and that would have only hurt Collette more. Ugh, tonight... and tomorrow are gonna be rough for me," Fleur sighed as she put her hand over her face and slowly walked away.
A short ways away, reporter, Kisha Shinbun managed to catch Iori for a post match interview.
"So it looks like your team just won the match, and 4-0, nonetheless. How ya feeling bout that?"
"Uh, elated! We fucking wrecked them!"
"I heard there was some intense banter pre-match where ya said some... controversial things to the French team, care to elaborate?"
A sadistic smirk appeared on Iori's face as she gleefully did just that. "Guess I will, and with a little added footnote. See, I tend to believe the stereotype that Frenchies are prone to surrendering, but I guess that ain't true. But none of it matters since surrender or not, they always get conquered by the end of the day one way or another."
