Chapter 13:

Chapter 13: Cracking the Code

Rusty Bonds

The room was bathed in an eerie blue light, the hum of the central terminal filling the silence as Lyla’s fingers flew across the holographic interface. Sparks crackled behind her as Rusty and Bolt fended off the last of the hostile KN-9s. Berry swung a metal rod in a desperate arc, narrowly deflecting another lunging attacker.

“Lyla, how much longer?” Berry shouted, his voice strained.

“Almost there!” she yelled back, her focus unbroken. “I just need to bypass one more layer of encryption.”

Rusty lunged at the hostile KN-9 that had cornered Tim, knocking it off balance. “Threat neutralized. Additional units not detected.”

Tim let out a shaky laugh, clutching the metal rod like a lifeline. “Thanks, Rusty. You’re a lifesaver.”

“Statement acknowledged,” Rusty replied, his tail wagging slightly.

Bolt barked a single, mechanical note as the terminal let out a soft chime.

“I’m in!” Lyla called, the holographic display shifting to reveal a series of schematics and command logs. Her eyes scanned the data, her expression darkening with every passing second. “Oh no…”

Berry rushed to her side. “What? What is it?”

“They’re not just targeting KN-9s,” Lyla said, her voice trembling. “They’ve been testing overrides on KN-9s, but the endgame is bigger—city-wide systems, infrastructure, drones, even emergency services.”

Berry’s blood ran cold. “They’re planning to take over the entire network?”

Lyla nodded. “If they succeed, they’ll control everything. Transportation, communications, power grids—it’s all connected.”

Tim leaned against the wall, his face pale. “So… we’re fighting someone who can basically turn the city into their personal toy. That’s just great.”

Rusty’s glowing eyes brightened as he scanned the data. “Command logs indicate a final activation sequence is pending. Origin of command: secondary terminal.”

“Where’s the secondary terminal?” Berry asked, his jaw tightening.

Rusty projected a map onto the wall, highlighting a location deep within the MacroDyne tower. “Location: Level 47. Security protocols expected to intensify.”

Berry exchanged a glance with Lyla. “We’ve come this far. We can’t stop now.”

Lyla nodded, her resolve hardening. “Then let’s finish this.”

The elevator ride to Level 47 was tense, the group standing in silence as the numbers ticked upward. The faint hum of the machinery was the only sound, a stark contrast to the chaos they had just escaped.

Berry glanced at Rusty, his hands trembling slightly. “Rusty, any idea what we’re walking into?”

“Security measures on Level 47 are advanced,” Rusty replied. “Hostile units and automated defenses likely. Probability of success: 61.2%.”

Tim groaned. “Man, your optimism really sells it.”

The elevator chimed as the doors slid open, revealing a sprawling control room dominated by a massive central console. The walls were lined with glowing screens displaying live feeds of the city—traffic patterns, drone routes, and automated systems all laid bare.

At the far end of the room stood a figure silhouetted against the light of the monitors. They turned slowly, their face partially obscured by the glow of an augmented reality visor.

“Well,” the figure said, their voice smooth and controlled. “I didn’t expect visitors.”

Berry stepped forward, his hands balled into fists. “You’re the one behind this. Why? What’s the point of all this?”

The figure chuckled, the sound chilling in its calmness. “The point? Control. This city runs on automation, and everyone blindly trusts it. KN-9s, drones, infrastructure—it’s all part of the same flawed system. A system I intend to correct.”

“By taking over everything?” Lyla demanded, her voice sharp. “You’re putting lives at risk!”

“Change always comes at a cost,” the figure replied. “But don’t worry—you won’t live to see it.”

At their command, a row of panels slid open, and a dozen KN-9 units stepped into the room, their eyes glowing a menacing red.

“Rusty, Bolt—take them down!” Berry shouted.

The room erupted into chaos as the KN-9s charged. Rusty and Bolt intercepted them, their movements precise and unyielding. Sparks flew as metal collided, the clash of machinery echoing through the control room.

Lyla darted to a nearby terminal, her fingers flying across the interface. “I’m going to try to disable their command link!”

“Tim, cover her!” Berry shouted, grabbing a loose pipe from the ground and swinging it at an approaching KN-9.

“I’m on it!” Tim replied, positioning himself between Lyla and the fight.

Rusty’s voice cut through the chaos. “Hostile units exhibiting enhanced coordination. Override attempt required.”

“Do it, Rusty!” Berry called.

Rusty’s eyes glowed brighter as he transmitted the override command. One by one, the hostile KN-9s froze, their systems shutting down.

“Override successful,” Rusty announced.

The figure at the console snarled, slamming their fist against the controls. “You think this changes anything? The activation sequence is already in progress!”

Berry’s heart raced as he turned to Lyla. “Can you stop it?”

“I’m trying!” she shouted, her hands shaking as she worked. “They’ve locked the sequence behind layers of encryption. I need more time!”

Rusty approached the central console, his glowing eyes scanning the interface. “Assistance available. Initiating secondary bypass.”

The figure’s voice rose in panic. “No! Get away from there!”

Berry stepped between them, his jaw set. “It’s over. You’re not getting away with this.”

The figure sneered, reaching for a hidden weapon. Before they could draw it, Tim lunged forward, tackling them to the ground.

“Gotcha!” Tim said, pinning the figure’s arm.

Lyla let out a triumphant shout as the holographic display shifted. “I’ve got it! Shutting down the activation sequence now!”

The room fell silent as the monitors powered down, the hum of the machinery fading. The figure slumped in defeat, their visor flickering.

Berry exhaled, his shoulders sagging with relief. “We did it.”

Rusty wagged his tail, his voice calm. “Threat neutralized. City systems restored to standard operation.”

As they exited the tower, the city seemed brighter somehow, its familiar hum no longer tinged with menace. Berry glanced at Lyla and Tim, a small smile playing on his lips.

“We stopped them,” he said quietly.

“For now,” Lyla replied, her expression serious. “But we need to make sure nothing like this happens again.”

Tim grinned. “One evil mastermind at a time, huh?”

Rusty trotted beside Berry, his mismatched legs clinking softly. “Teamwork remains optimal. Probability of continued success: high.”

Berry chuckled, the weight on his chest lifting slightly. For the first time in a long while, he felt like things were going to be okay.
