Chapter 21:
Rusty Bonds
The abandoned lab erupted into chaos as the humanoid robots sprang to life. Their movements were unnervingly smooth, their glowing eyes locked onto the team with an almost predatory precision. Vanguard stood at the back of the room, a silent overseer as their creations moved to intercept.
“Rusty, Bolt—engage!” Berry shouted, his voice echoing through the chamber.
Rusty leapt forward without hesitation, his mismatched frame colliding with the nearest robot. Bolt followed close behind, his sleek, agile frame weaving between the advancing units as sparks flew with every clash.
Lyla ducked behind a console, frantically scanning the room. “There’s got to be a way to shut these things down!”
“Figure it out fast!” Tim shouted, swinging his makeshift weapon at one of the robots. The impact barely slowed it, its unyielding frame forcing him to retreat.
Berry gritted his teeth as another robot lunged at him, its metallic limbs striking with precision. He swung his weapon in a desperate arc, managing to deflect the attack just enough to avoid a direct hit. “Rusty, can you override them?”
“Attempting override,” Rusty replied, his glowing eyes brightening. “Defensive protocols: advanced. Interference detected.”
Vanguard’s voice rang out, cold and mocking. “You’ve relied on your salvaged pet for far too long, boy. Let’s see how you fare without it.”
A sudden burst of energy crackled through the room, and Rusty stumbled, his movements faltering. His eyes flickered as his systems struggled against the surge.
“Rusty!” Berry shouted, rushing to his side.
“I am… functional,” Rusty said, his voice strained. “Temporary system disruption detected.”
Vanguard chuckled, their helmet glinting in the dim light. “Your defiance is admirable, but ultimately futile. Surrender now, and I may spare you.”
Berry clenched his fists, his resolve hardening. “We’re not giving up. Not now, not ever.”
Lyla’s voice broke through the chaos. “I’ve got something! There’s a central control signal for the robots—it’s coming from Vanguard’s helmet!”
Berry’s eyes darted to Vanguard, his mind racing. “If we can disrupt the signal—”
“It’ll shut them down,” Lyla finished. “But I need to isolate it first. Keep them busy!”
“No pressure,” Tim muttered, narrowly dodging another attack.
Berry tightened his grip on his weapon, his gaze locking onto Vanguard. “Rusty, cover Lyla. I’ll deal with them.”
Rusty’s glowing eyes steadied as he moved to shield Lyla, his frame battered but determined. “Acknowledged. Defensive position established.”
Berry charged toward Vanguard, his movements fueled by adrenaline and determination. The humanoid robots tried to intercept him, but Rusty and Bolt held the line, their efforts buying him precious seconds.
Vanguard met Berry’s charge with a fluid sidestep, their movements almost too fast to follow. “Bold,” they said, their voice tinged with amusement. “But foolish.”
Berry swung his weapon in a wide arc, but Vanguard deflected the blow effortlessly, their helmeted face inches from his. “You can’t win this, boy. You’re outmatched.”
“I don’t have to win,” Berry said through gritted teeth. “I just have to buy time.”
Vanguard’s chuckle was cut short as Berry feigned a retreat, then lunged forward with a desperate strike. The impact jarred Vanguard’s helmet, causing a brief flicker in the control signal. The humanoid robots faltered, their movements stuttering for a split second.
Lyla seized the opportunity, her fingers flying across the console. “That’s it! I’ve isolated the signal!”
“Do it!” Berry shouted, keeping Vanguard occupied with a flurry of desperate attacks.
Lyla initiated the disruption, the room filling with a high-pitched whine as the signal began to collapse. The humanoid robots froze mid-action, their glowing eyes dimming as the control link was severed.
Vanguard staggered, their helmet sparking as the disruption overloaded its systems. “No!” they shouted, their voice laced with fury. “You insolent—”
Before they could finish, Rusty tackled them, his weight knocking them to the ground. Vanguard struggled against his grip, but Rusty’s mismatched frame held firm.
“Threat neutralized,” Rusty said, his voice calm but firm.
Berry approached cautiously, his chest heaving. “It’s over, Vanguard.”
Vanguard chuckled weakly, their voice distorted by the damaged helmet. “You think this changes anything? You’ve only delayed the inevitable. Phoenix was just the beginning.”
Lyla joined Berry, her expression grim. “What do you mean?”
Vanguard’s helmet flickered, revealing part of their face—scarred, but with eyes burning with conviction. “You’ll see soon enough.”
Before anyone could react, a hidden failsafe in Vanguard’s helmet activated, sending a burst of energy through the room. When the light faded, Vanguard was gone, leaving only the faint scent of ozone behind.
The team stood in silence, the weight of the moment pressing heavily on their shoulders. Berry stared at the empty space where Vanguard had been, his fists clenched.
“They got away,” he said quietly, his voice tinged with frustration.
“But we stopped them for now,” Lyla said, resting a hand on his shoulder. “That has to count for something.”
Rusty approached, his glowing eyes steady. “Victory achieved. Future challenges anticipated.”
Tim slumped against the wall, his face pale but relieved. “Let’s just hope the next challenge doesn’t involve more killer robots.”
Berry managed a faint smile, his resolve hardening. “Whatever comes next, we’ll face it. Together.”
Rusty wagged his tail, his voice calm. “Team unity remains strong. Probability of continued success: increasing.”
Berry looked at his friends and their loyal KN-9s, a flicker of hope lighting his eyes. The fight wasn’t over, but they had proven they could stand against the odds. And they would be ready for whatever came next.
