Chapter 6:
Thorns in Paradise
Today is the last day of quarantine for the time travelers. Tomorrow they start school. The majority of the group was excited for their freedom to roam the city. Some of them had already purchased clothes through the internet. Everyone here is given an allowance. A smaller allowance since most of the funding is going to food and shelter. Jobs will be allowed if the right paperwork is done.
Only a handful looked into jobs. Stacy looked into beautician shop openings. She can't touch anyone till she is licensed so it leaves her looking for cleaning jobs. All of them had Soleil's doing the cleaning though. Kiki her Soleil did find an opening where she would model in their shop window while being broadcasted live on their website. She would need to be able to show off hair styles, colors, blow outs, up do's and nails.
Lizzy already looked into veterinarian assistant jobs. Karen informed her there are no openings. Along with there will be no openings til she is in college.
Lizzy is laying in her bed listening to the munching of hay from Bea since today is rainy. Her spirits are a little on the lower side. Lizzy asked Karen to see if there was any openings involving large animals in general. Karen starts her search.
"A message from Amethyst would you like to read it?" Karen asks.
"Why would she send me a message? Yea you can read it." Lizzy says.
"Ahem." Karen pretends to clear it's throat then does her best Amethyst impression. "My data shows you are looking for a job."
"What? She is tracking that?" Lizzy sits up.
"Yea everything online is tracked. That's how you get personal coupons and such. Now may I continue or are you going to keep getting dumbfounded?" Karen sassed.
"Alright continue."
"Very well. Ahem. Most jobs are taken by the Soleil but I want data of how animals use to interact with humans. Would you be interested in sending me videos on the bonding process? The pay is well and everything you need will be provided."
"That doesn't sound like a bad gig. Ask her if it will help me get into vet school. Then you can go on standby."
"Message sent." Karen sits on the desk on standby.
Lizzy picks up one of those new books that's a touch screen. With a shake it powers up. She picks back up where the two girls chemistry is noticed by the other one.
"Amethyst replied." Karen dinged.
"And?" Lizzy annoyed she got interrupted.
"She will add it as experienced with large animals. Meaning you will get picked by a college with the top veterinarian program." Karen explains.
"Huh. Alright, I will take the job. When do I start and where?" Lizzy gets up on her elbow to look at Karen.
"Oh look she sent another message. Tomorrow is only a half a day of school. After you get out of school we are going to the paddocks. Your animals will be moved there before school anyways. Amethyst says load out is at 5am. And yes you will be coming if you wish to do so. Any questions?" Karen sighs a sigh of boredom. As if it's bothersome to be a messenger.
"Nope, I'm good. Tell her we will be ready. Set an alarm for 4:45am. Then you're good to go on standby for the night." Lizzy plops on her bed. She shakes the glass book again to power it up.
"Finally I get to rest." Karen says with some sass.
"I don't work you as hard as the other girls. And it's the middle of the afternoon. Jeez you're spoiled. No I don't want to hear it. Karen go on standby."
Karen's face powers down and it'd body rests on the desk across the room. Lizzy dives into her glass book. Time flies when she is reading and she can't wait for 5am.
. . . . .
Ping. Dingaling. Dingaling. Ping. Karen's alarm is going off for Lizzy.
"I'm up." Lizzy sits straight up in bed.
"About time." Said Karen. "I had to listen to that for a whole five seconds."
"Wow you are extra moody in the morning." Lizzy says padding off to the bathroom.
"When else am I to be the most moody?"
"Get over it."
Lizzy is ready in ten minutes. Definition of ready is teeth brushed, shirt, pants, boots are on with a packaged breakfast bar hanging from her mouth. She has her school bag packed with a lunch, a digital note book and her glass book is hidden in a little pouch.
Load out went smooth. Bea understands stairs and has been leash trained. Speckles was half asleep when being caught so no injures happened.
There was a small floating vehicle waiting outside. Everyone got loaded and drove off to the paddocks. They are just outside the wall of the city.
The paddocks are large barns running side by side with a road between them. Most of the barns had pastures running length wise on the opposite side. Almost every farm animal and a variety of their breeds where at the facilities.
The chickens got their own pen with a pasture. Bea got introduced to a pen of female and whether boar goats. Lizzy stayed awhile to make sure Bea settled in. Of course the goats all needed to bump heads a few times.
"Alright Bea, I need to get to school I will be back soon." Lizzy tells the goat and heads off to school to meet up with Stacy.
. . . . .
After some harassment from Stacy. Lizzy gets pulled into the girls bathroom and Stacy starts working her magic. Her curls are no longer frizzy and her hair looks manageable. Stacy starts breaking out some blush.
"What are you doing?" Lizzy asks.
"Making you look presentable." Stacy preps a brush. Lizzy's heart races.
"Oh no!" Lizzy does her best to escape. Stacy blocks her holding out her makeup brush like a sword.
"I want to be able to talk to boys and you need to look approachable for that. I won't put make up on you if you can to hide your resting face."
Lizzy sighs.
"I will do my best." She agrees. Stacy touches up her blush and they go off to classes.
They get settled into their first class.
"Why is that girl smiling to herself? That's creepy." Some girls whisper to each other.
Lizzy gives up and puts her head down. And so it begins again she thinks to herself.
Once school was out Stacy hounded Lizzy til she gave into agreeing for a make over. Lizzy walked Stacy part way to the dorms since it was on the way to the paddocks.
Once there she walks through the cow barn since the door opened for her. And of course she sees a pretty blue roan bull with a light black that people call blue circle around his one eye.
"Hi pretty boy." Lizzy says stepping up on his gate.
He is curious so he comes up to her. Holding out her hand he tries sniffing it but she keeps pulling it away from him so he keeps stepping closer. She is able to reach and give him a scratch under his chin. He was startled but comes back for more.
"Good boy." Lizzy boops the bull on his nose and keeps walking. She gets to the goat barn. Setting her bag down she then hops the gate. Lizzy calls out to Bea who is out on pasture. Bea runs to her while the other goats run to the middle of the pasture. They stand there watching her carefully for any fast movements.
"What's your plan for bonding with them?" Amethyst asks.
"Well how much human contact do they get?" Lizzy answers the question with a question.
"None. Soleil's care for them. So if I am to go over there." Amethyst flies over to the herd. They look at Amethyst but are more scared of Lizzy.
"I'm not sure how long but it's going to be awhile. Bonding works best when they are separated from the herd. Once it's one on one, you are the herd. Safety in numbers thanks to prey instincts." Lizzy reaches through the gate and grabs her glass book.
"I will leave you to your work. Oh, here comes someone you will be working with often." Amethyst says.
Lizzy looks over the gate to see a young man walking their way. His face looked angry, tuffs of red hair stuck out from under his white hat and his white uniform was spotless.
"You need to leave now! I don't know how you got in here but this is a bio-secured area!" He shouted.
"Now Alex, is that anyway to treat a new hire? Besides she followed the wash in and wash out procedure." Amethyst hoovers closer to him.
"A-amethyst!? What?!" He takes a step back seeing the Soleil.
"She will be here working with the large animals and maybe some small. She will be sending me data since no one is interested in working with large animals anymore. They have gone almost wild. Now how about a nice hello to Lizzy?" Amethyst states.
"Hi Lizzy." Alex says a little reluctantly. His light green eyes judging her.
"Hi Alex. You seem nice." Lizzy says with just a touch of sarcasm.
