Chapter 5:

Karen

Thorns in Paradise

Lizzy steps into the room. The walls are white and the carpet is a dark pine green. The shape is similar to what a dorm would look like. On the left there's room for what would be a couch but it is replaced with a hip high wall to house Bea. She is happily munching on a clover grass mix til she sees Lizzy. Bea puts her front hooves on the wall so her head can get some scratchies.

The twin sized bed is pushed up to the left wall in the back. The suit case she had packed is by it. On the right wall by the window is a larger metal desk with a comfortable looking office chair. The desk has a mini fridge and microwave. Then a small built in closet to the right.

"What's this door lead to?" Lizzy opens the door on the right wall by the entry door.

There is a joining bathroom. With two sinks. A shower and toilet. Mostly white with some blue trim and tiling for accents.

"Hi neighbor!" Stacy pokes her head in.

Lizzy jumps back.

"Whow. Hi." She replies.

"You sprinted up her really fast." Stacy says walking past Lizzy with her own Soleil following her. "Let me see your room. Hi Bea! Who's a good girl!?"

Bea jumps up for more scratching.

"Where is Henrietta?" Stacy asks.

"That was my next question." Lizzy looks at the Soleil.

"The chickens are on the roof since it would have been too hard to control the dust they produce. Would you like to see them?" It hoovers over to the door.

"Yes please." Lizzy says grabbing Bea's leash hanging on the wall. She hooks Bea to it and opens the half door for the goat to get out.

They all take the flight of stairs up to the roof. Bea being carried the whole way by Lizzy. On the roof Lizzy's legs are burning from not being use to stairs. Let alone carrying extra weight up them. She very shakily sets the goat down.

There are about fifteen other people already on the roof looking around. The majority of the roof was shrubbery and flowers. A gravel path ran through and connected in many spots. There was a spot with tables and chairs. In the corner is a fenced off grass patch with a small coop and Lizzy's three chickens. Next to it is a bigger thirty by fifty foot fenced off patch for Bea to stretch her legs. The one corner had a small shelter for her to hide from the sun or rain if needed.

Lizzy let's Bea go into the pen. And goes to check on the chickens. The chickens are already scratching and pulling up the grass in their pen hoping to find insects.

"Hey you three." Lizzy says squatting by the fence. They all run up to her. The girls looking for treats and Speckles just keeps an eye on Lizzy.

"There is a full time Soleil to care for them. Since there is a very high chance people that haven't seen a chicken will try to catch them. The gate only opens for you and that Soleil. I will notify you right away if anything is to happen or someone is trying to break into the pen." Lizzy's Soleil says.

"Alright." Lizzy says getting up. She walks to the door and it opens for her. She gives the girls a petting while Speckles puts up a protest trying to call his hens back over to him.

"Alright you can have your girls back." Lizzy says getting up and trying to get out the door.

Speckles charges full force at her heel. Lizzy turns to look at him. He stops a foot away. His head turned staring her down with one eye. There is a lot of fight in his gaze.

"Come here." Lizzy holds out her arms. Speckles squints and blinks a few times. Contemplating the choice he just made. "You have had enough stress today. Rest up." Lizzy walks backward and finishes stepping out of the door.

She looks at her animals for a bit. Happy they are with her.

"I'm going to introduce myself to everyone. I know it's not your style to be chatty. Let's meet up at the cafeteria in about two hours to get lunch?" Stacy points her thumb over her shoulder at the small group talking and looking over the horizon.

"Alright, I will meet you there." Lizzy says with a smile. Her friend smiles back and takes off toward the group.

Lizzy goes into Bea's pen and sits in the shade of the structure. She watches the goat look for the clover patches in the grass.

"Should we do my programming now?" Asks the Soleil. Lizzy looks up at it.

"I'm not good with computers." She replies.

"Oh my programming is very easy I ask you questions and you pick from the options or the scale given." The Soleil lights it's face up with a black smiley face. "First question what's your favorite color?"

"Um green." Lizzy looks at the bot funny.

"Which shade do you prefer?" The Soleil turns it's face a shade of green. Then it flips through a series of shades of green.

"The dark one looked nice." She comments. The Soleil's face stays that dark green color.

"Next is voice pitch."

Lizzy picks the normal feminine tone. Even though the deep bass coming from such a small body was truly funny.

"Now for personality."

Lizzy lined up the questions for the personality so the Soleil was laid back but not afraid to jump into the conversation. Humor was a mix of dark and light. Curiosity was a littler higher so it would look into things. The Soleil found download data so they can have conversations about agriculture in general along with veterinarian information. The Soleil seemed a little too bubbly for Lizzy though. She loves Stacy's happy go lucky but Lizzy can only have one person like that.

"Could you be a little more bi..." Lizzy gets cut off.

"I prefer the turn moody. Do you get that or do I need to spell it out for you?" The Soleil flashes an angry face.

"That's better." Lizzy chuckles. The Soleil smiles.

"A message has been received from Stacy. Should I delete it?" The Soleil smirked.

"No! How do I read it? Maybe dial the moody back just a touch not much though." Lizzy says.

"It's a voice recording or I can display the message on my face." The Soleil replies.

"Let's hear it." Lizzy tells the bot.

"Hey farm girl! You won't believe how many people I traded my number with. Well Kiki's number since my phone doesn't have service. Everyone is so nice outside of a few that I will just ignore since they are jelly of my hair and makeup. I hope you didn't forget to meet me at the cafeteria! I'm heading there now. I'm so starved! Ta ta!" The message ends.

"It's been about two hours since she left. Will you be heading down now?" Asks the Soleil.

"I probably should." Lizzy gets up. Bea seems content in her pen.

"One last question to complete the programming. Would you like to give me a name? If you don't name me I will name myself Glamorous." It's face lights up in a mischievous smile.

"Karen." Lizzy says walking toward the stair well doors.

"What?!" Karen's program saves.
