Chapter 11:
The Girl Who Saw It All
“Are you shitting me right now!” Lia yelled.
Her anger was understandable. We were all currently in the conference room discussing what we’d do next. It was already hard enough to get through all the patrol cars but now we’re being delayed even more. Rina’s authorization has been denied.
For the two days that I was asleep we didn’t move from this building, now we were stuck here indefinitely.
“Do you have any ideas May?” Rina asked, surprising me.
She was the last person I expected to ask that. She never believed what I said or took my opinions seriously so this caught me off-guard.
I thought for a while, The End wasn’t saying anything either so I wasn’t too worried.
“We’ll have to force our way in,” Demi suggested eventually.
“You said that only the gate guards have authorization to open and close the gates, how can force work?” I asked me him.
“With more force,” he said simply.
I was at a loss for words when Rina said snidely, “Leave it to you government dogs to resort to force when you can’t have your way.”
Demi raised an eyebrow at her and challenged, “Then what do you suggest oh righteous one?”
Since Rina and I left the balcony, she’s been purposely aggravating everyone. She started insulting Lia when she heard she’d be joining us, if Demi hadn’t held Lia back the two of them would’ve ended up fighting. After Lia, she started throwing snide remarks at Demi, he didn’t take her seriously and purposely pissed her off with his retorts.
His question seemed to has strike a nerve in Rina because she cursed at him. Needless to say, this caused the three of them to start arguing. I let out a sigh, we won’t get anywhere at this rate.
“I agree with Demi,” I chimed in as they argued.
They stopped for a moment and looked at me.
“I agree with May,” Lia said.
“Looks like that’s three to one,” Demi said smugly.
Rina was about to retort when a loud roar interrupted her. We ran to a window to see what was happening and even though I was seeing it, I couldn’t believe it.
During the two days I was out Lia had informed me that the District Officers got rid of eighty percent of the zombies. It was all over the internet so people were overjoyed. This nightmare was almost over. But I didn’t feel the slightest bit of relief. If this could’ve been resolved by the District Officers then I wouldn’t have needed to go to D1.
Roaming the street with a police hover-car in hand was a combination of zombies.
“What the hell is that?!” Lia exclaimed.
The grotesque creature had five heads, ten arms and two pairs of feet. There was blood gushing out from where the extra body parts were as it roared in pain.
‘The mutation has begun.’
My eyes widened in fear at The Ends words, “They’re mutating…”
“What?!” Rina exclaimed, “How the hell are they mutating?!”
“How would I know?!” I shot back, I was frustrated that she was suddenly looking to me for all the answers.
That was a bad idea. It happened before I could even process what was happening. The zombie had thrown the hover-car and Demi pulled me and Lia out of the way.
I watched the car as it smashed into the wall.
The mutated zombie didn’t stop there, it tore a traffic light off the ground and threw it. It kept bombarding us with anything it could throw.
Demi acted fast, he directed us to cover as we ran to a lower floor.
I could hear the commotion from upstairs, they were confused and panicked.
“Wait! We need to help them!’ I exclaimed as I looked back.
But no one stopped, Demi dragged me along as we kept running. I kept pleading with them to turn back, but they didn’t. Those people helped me. Lia said they knew who I was but they didn’t report me. All they said was that I was just a harmless child. I couldn’t just abandon them.
My eyes met The End’s and I begged her, ‘Please help them.’
‘This action will have consequences, are you certain you want to help them?’
‘I am! Please!’
Suddenly everything went quiet. The bombardment had stopped. A few seconds later sirens resounded from outside, followed by gunshots and people shouting orders.
“This is our chance!” Demi said determinedly as we escaped the building.
We couldn’t take the car we used to get here so we’d have to move on foot.
As we were running, I looked back and saw that everyone who was in the building was escaping quickly.
I let out a sigh of relief and faced forward. They were safe for now, that’s all that mattered.
We ran for a while until we came to a stop in an alleyway. All of us panted as we tried to catch our breaths. I was thankful that my leg had healed up a bit.
“We need to be careful from now on. If those things are mutating then this situation just got a whole lot worse,” Demi paused to take a breath before he continued, “I trust we have no more objections about my methods?”
Rina clicked her tongue in annoyance. I don’t know why she was suddenly like this; I’d have to talk with her later.
“Let’s find somewhere to stay for a bit before we move. It’s dangerous to walk around right now,” Lia suggested as she wiped the sweat off her forehead.
We cautiously searched for a place to stay until we found a house with barricaded windows and a broken door. Demi inspected the house before giving us the okay.
It seems like this day had gone by so quickly. A mutation was the last thing any of us expected.
I walked through the door, completely forgetting The End’s words from earlier. If only I had remembered those words.
