Chapter 278:

Cheaters never win

En Passant Grandmaster

When Mimoko had initially left her game to go check on the men, it was just after she made her 7th move. Since then, Laura moved her queen to b5, and after waiting 20 minutes, decided to go look for Mimoko. Mimoko still had some decent time left on the clock when she returned and captured the bishop at c4 with her knight. However, Laura did have the time advantage despite her worse position.

What had seen some action though was the game at board 4 between Iori and Isabella. When Mimoko left, their game was on move 10 with Isabella just having moved her pawn to a4. Iori responded by moving her pawn to d5 shortly after. Isabella then moved her pawn to e5, but that was a mistake as it allowed Iori to move her knight to d7, which at a glance didn't look like anything special. However, the eval bar was now swinging towards Iori and only continued to do so as yet again, the curse of the castle struck with Isabella's position worsening after a king's side castle.

It was then that the beauty of the earlier knight d7 was revealed as Iori could now capture the pawn at e5 with her knight. And while Isabella simply captured said knight with her knight, Iori captured said knight with her bishop, ending the exchange a pawn up.

Isabella quickly grew frustrated and moved her bishop to d4. "No, what am I doing wrong? Why is she winning so bigly?" she thought as Iori moved her bishop to d6.

She began pinching her lip and moved her pawn to f4, not satisfied, but not upset by the move. Iori moving her knight to e6 didn't do much either, but as soon as she moved her queen to d3, she began panicking.

"NO! Why is this so good for her!?" she thought as Iori captured the pawn at f4 with her knight.

Desperate, Isabella moved her queen to e3, yet that appeared to freak her out even more. Iori shot her an odd glare, but decided not to stress over it too much and moved her knight to e6.

"Guess she's the type that realizes she's fucked only after the fact," she thought as Isabella moved her a-rook to d1.

Iori didn't care about the extra defense though and captured the bishop at d4 with her knight, prompting Isabella to capture said knight with her rook. She then moved her rook to b8, causing Isabella to play the baffling pawn to b4.

"Hold on... I can just reck with the rook! Lol, we're sweeping these bitches just like the Frenchies," Iori thought as she captured the pawn at b4 with her rook.

Isabella promptly captured said rook with her rook, but Iori simply captured said rook with her bishop.

"No, NO! Why's it skewed so heavily towards her!? I can't lose, if I do, we lose the match," Isabella thought as she moved her knight to a2.

Iori countered by moving her bishop to a5, but as soon as Isabella moved her queen to g3, she began to scowl. It wasn't the move itself though, but rather Isabella's reaction.

"She sure does realize her fuck-ups pretty instantly. I can get it, but it is a little weird that it's immediately after she takes her hand off the piece. You'd think she'd think things through a bit more... But I can tell I'm dominating so who cares, I'll crush her anyway," Iori thought as she moved her bishop to d6.

Isabella moved her queen to e3, but Iori decided to move her queen to a5, and it was then that her suspicions were confirmed for as soon as Isabella moved her queen to d4, she began panicking. Anyone could understand why as with Iori's devastating bishop to c5, the queen was lost.

At this point, both Mimoko and Laura had long since returned and progressed their game a fair bit, yet it was thanks to Laura's presence that things were only made worse, as following Isabella moving her queen to f2, Iori decided to in the end, let her sadism run loose.

"Check, so that eval bar ya got on ya say you're fucked yet?" Iori sneered as she captured the queen at f2 with her bishop.

The accusation stunned everyone, but perhaps the most shaken was Laura. Arbiters began closing in, yet Laura was the one that got up, and did the deed, approaching Isabella and brushing aside the hair covering her eye, which upon doing so, caused a small translucent electronic device to fly out of it and land on the floor.

"L- Laura, I-"

SLAP!

"Idiota... PERCHÉ HAI TRADITO?!? PENSAVO CHE TU FOSSI CAMBIATO [You idiot... WHY DID YOU CHEAT!? I THOUGHT YOU CHANGED!]"

All Isabella could do was tremble an sob, though she at least had enough wits to turn towards Iori and the arbiters and say, "I resign."

Upon hearing those words, Prokrutka, who had arrived faster than the speed of light, scowled as he picked up the device Isabella had on her. "Very well, the loss shall be recorded as resignation, but the disciplinary action will persist. As for the others, the match is now 3-0 Japan, but I will allow you to play on."

Laura somberly nodded and returned to her seat as Prokrutka marched Isabella away. "Why? Isabella, I thought you changed."

Now despite whatever happened at board 1, Japan had won the match against Italy, yet the game at board 1 was still far from over.
