Chapter 9:
Ring Fall Y2K
Nomad was buzzing with electricity as he dashed from one enemy to the next in seemingly impossible patterns, at times even stepping on air as the mech itself was lifted by one of the jets assisting Nomad’s speed.
The air itself needed a moment to process the speed at which Nomad was moving.
While he slashed and diced, several frogs, apparently hidden on the hilt of the blade, started glowing green.
The moment the green light reached the blade, the sword grew in size for a moment giving Nomad a deceptive range, that was longer than it seemed.
At first William was too stunned by the swordplay to realize, but the sword suddenly managed to cut the enemies with no issue. Charged with an ungodly amount of electricity it ,in fact , cut almost anything with no issue. Leaving a trail of melted stone as it contacted the ground after a large slash.
“Careful! If you use too much power, you will overheat!” Anya tried to warn Louis as she smashed the skulls of all the pinned monsters.
“There are not enough of them for that Ma sœur“ Louis said with gusto as he unleashed ten missiles from the Wings at his mech’s back at the largest groups around.
The rockets were shot out with air pressure and ignited in the air to seek their prey.
In one slice Nomad managed to cut in half six Fallen.
His blade extended with green light and lightning, cutting foe as well as terrain.
He dashed and spun his blade, cutting five more along with massive chunks of the wall.
And with his speed, he did all that with the missiles still airborne.
The ground shook.
Parts of the spiral collapsed downwards in big chunks, leaving holes where ground once was.
“Down!” Captain Ward called.
Waterfall descended through the holes in the ground.
She coiled around the wounded fallen on her way down, grinding them to a pulp with sharp scales.
Undying started to run forward, bashing any of the remaining Devourers in her path downwards, clearing the way.
The climbing Monsters who tried to flank the team found themselves in free fall, with three missiles still in pursuit.
The beasts left of those who fought Nomad before shrieked as they desperately tried to get a bite out of him.
They seemed to focus only on him. As if eating him would be the greatest achievement of their life.
For a moment William wanted to run down, trusting nomad to follow after him.
But he knew better, he would not leave another man behind. Not again.
He changed his bat to a gun with a flick. Loaded two magazines of alternating exploding and armor piercing rounds. And fired.
It was like hitting a fly with a slingshot, in the middle of an earthquake.
But four seconds in, and William already stacked four headshots. And the seconds kept piling on as they fought their way down.
Nomad landed for a moment while he tried to spin and dash once more.
But before he could, the last remaining four weaved between his attacks.
They did so expertly, as if they could perceive them in advance, landing four massive hits on the stomach of his mech.
William shot two of them in the head with one huge bullet.
The remaining two locked eyes with William’s mech.
And though he was larger he knew they could rip him out of his metal shell.
Before William managed to reload and shoot them again they both ran away.
The monsters ate a chunk of wall and jumped off the building.
“Where are the purple ones? The lasers, I cut the lasers, but they were not there” Louis said while panting.
“I think I got a few, but I did not see a purple body. ” William said to Louis.
“Is it over Mon Frere?” Louis asked while their section of the building was about to crumble.
“Nope, a group of a hundred green Fallen are on the way here” The captain replied.
“Merde. How many did we get so far?” Louis said, his mech steaming and brandishing a new hole.
“Between us all, about two hundred give or take” William replied slightly smirking.
“Oath. Me and Waterfall are out of the building. Securing landing zone for you and Nomad”, Undying said in the chat as the sound of a railgun accompanied her voice.
“While you do so, find a rooftop I can get on top of quickly” William said in response as he reloaded a second magazine and fired his rifle in the direction of the green Fallen in the distance.
“Mon Frere, they are six kilometers away. Are you sure you want to waste a bulle-“ Louis protested. But he was cut short as the air shook with the force of William’s shot.
A red streak hit a building just beside one of the enemies, missing a Fallen by a hair.
“Never mind I will not disturb” Louis added as The Oath took aim and hit one of the Giants in the head with an explosive bullet, mid running.
By the time Kaya’s voice told them they could jump, Captain Ward shot down twenty Giants.
On the way down, Nomad wrapped his arm around Oath and placed his foot under its heels. Louis then engaged the engines in his feet, slowing both of them down before a pillow of jellyfish broke their fall.
As soon as they landed on ground level, William climbed to a nearby building.
Once he had his line of sight again, he kept firing at the approaching giants .
“I can take care of the smaller ones, who’s got the bigger one?” Ward said while the ground around him started being covered in bullet shells.
“I will, just give me a moment to get patched up” Anya said while a few of the jellyfish filled the holes in her armor with freshly printed metal.
“Ma sœur, you are the best“ Louis said to Kaya as the jellyfish started to work on patching his hole up.
William decided to trust his team and keep firing.
Getting more and more in the zone with each time he looked down his sights.
But the enemy was getting uncomfortably close. If William missed a single shot, one of the charging humongous monstrosities would get to him.
When the thirty-meter-tall Giant approached William was tempted to shoot it.
But after reconsidering, the captain realized that it would take more than a single bullet to kill the beast.
In that time, he would get overwhelmed.
He was taller than some buildings and moved closer and closer to William with every passing second.
The ground shook. Both from the gunfire and the steps of the beast.
But Ward ignored it. Trusting in his team with his life.
The Giant raised his arm to squash the comparatively smaller Oath.
Next to the monster William felt his mech looked like a toddler. And just when Ward made peace with his kill to death ratio and his life flashed before his eyes.
The sound of Anya’s scream echoed through the open chat.
“CAPTAIN!! GET DOWN!!”
His body moved before he could register what happened.
William took a dive to the ground as Undying jumped over him.
He could barely make out the frame as it fell from above, missing him by a moment.
The four-armed Mech picked up its hammer and swung at the giant. Hitting him square in the elbow with enough force to break the arm and the attack.
Undying then twisted forward in a front flip, using its hammer as support.
Only to drop down with the hammer in tow, smashing the Giants knee, along with every window in a kilometer radius.
The green monstrosity fell to the ground.
Reactively touching a half-fallen streetlight and made it grow a hundred-fold in attempts to hit Undying.
But Anya saw it coming and stopped her mech dead in its tracks, making the growing metal pole miss by a fraction. She then proceeded to climb on top of the giants chest and hit him again.
The sound of metal hitting bone echoed throughout Paris as Anya’s hammer found its mark shattering the skull of the surprised Giant, and the ground beneath it.
“Anya, I owe you a drink!” Ward said while sweating bullets, knowing the fight is over.
