Chapter 290:
En Passant Grandmaster
As soon as the games at boards 3 and 4 ended, Wiesława returned from her walk around the room. Seeing the 3-0 score only made her want to walk away again, but she had to see her game to completion.
"Damn you Urzula. We should have just let sleeping bitch sleep, but now you've screwed us not just for the match, but the whole damn tournament!"
Wiesława's game with Mimoko hadn't been going so well. With Mimoko as White and Wiesława as Black, it had started out with an Accelerated London System, consisting of d4, d5, bishop f4, knight f6, e3, c5, d captures c5, knight c6, and knight f3. Wiesława then opted to move her pawn to e5, resulting in Mimoko capturing said pawn with her knight. Wiesława captured the pawn at c5 with her bishop and even though she was down a pawn, things weren't too bad.
Then Mimoko moved her bishop to e2, tempting Wiesława to move her knight to e4. Mimoko countered with knight d2, but Wiesława brought her queen out to e7.
"Hmm, not the best play," Mimoko thought as she captured the knight at e4 with her knight.
Wiesława promptly captured said knight with her d-pawn, but then Mimoko made a slight misstep of moving her queen to d5 instead of capturing the knight at c6 with her knight, but it was only a slight misstep, and a calculated one as Wiesława took the bait and captured the knight at e5 with her knight, allowing Mimoko to capture said knight with her queen.
Wiesława then opted to castle king's side, giving Mimoko the chance to capture the queen at e7 with her queen. Wiesława captured said queen with her bishop, but tempo was on Mimoko's side as a queen's side castle gave her rook control of the d-file.
Next came bishop e6, then bishop d6, bishop captures d6, rook captures d6, f-rook d8, rook d4, rook captures d4, and e captures d4. Wiesława wasn't even paying attention to the other games, focused solely on her game with Mimoko.
"Damn monster. She's taking me to a damn endgame before move 20. If I wasn't a pawn down and against someone else, I'd be fine, but this monster's playing perfectly, dammit!" she fumed in her mind as she moved her pawn to g6.
Mimoko responded by moving her pawn to c4 as Wiesława moved her rook to c8. She then moved her pawn to b3 as Wiesława moved her pawn to f5, forming a pawn chain. That didn't matter though as Mimoko moved her king out to d2, causing Wiesława to scowl.
"Just great. Now her king's coming out. Ugh, I HATE dealing with endgame kings!" she fumed in her mind as she moved her pawn to f4.
She realized her error too late as Mimoko immediately played rook to e1. The move caused Wiesława to sink her hand into her face and get up to walk around a bit. And when she returned, Poland had lost the match with her game being the only one left in play.
"Damn you Urzula. We should have just let sleeping bitch sleep, but now you've screwed us not just for the match, but the whole damn tournament!" Wiesława thought as she sat back down and moved her bishop to f5.
At this point, Wiesława was in a completely losing position with no hope of winning or drawing. Yet pride kept her from throwing in the towel. Perhaps just maybe Mimoko would slip up in the endgame. Though that appeared to be a pipe dream as pawn to g4 was on the board, sending Wiesława's bishop back to d7.
Mimoko then slid her bishop to d1, prompting Wiesława to move her rook to e8. Mimoko scoffed at the move and simply moved her pawn to d5, frustrating Wiesława further.
"Damn bitch! Mess up, will ya!" Wiesława fumed in her mind as she moved her king to f7.
Her frustration only grew as Mimoko moved her king to c3, signaling she knew exactly how to win this. Wiesława desperately tried to create some form of counterplay by moving her pawn to f3, but Mimoko ignored it and moved her king to d4, her focus on promoting a pawn. Wiesława gritted her teeth and promptly captured the pawn at g4 with her bishop, but that was a mistake as after Mimoko captured the pawn at e4 with her rook, Wiesława's bishop was in trouble.
"Alright, check, you damn monster!" Wiesława fumed as she captured the rook at e4 with her rook.
Mimoko was slightly taken aback by Wiesława's statement, but it ultimately didn't phase her. "A "monster" she says, perhaps that's how many view me. I can understand her frustration, in fact I'll be chewing out Okaa-chan for that evil sin later. But I'm not going to just play easier because of that. That would be disrespectful to both the game and you if I held back out of pity. I'm sorry if that upsets you, but thus is the game of chess," she thought as she captured the rook at e4 with her king.
Still clinging on to hope, perhaps more so out of desperation than optimism, Wiesława played on and moved her king to f6. Mimoko then captured the pawn at f3 with her bishop, prompting Wiesława to deliver another check by moving her bishop to f5. Mimoko sidestepped the threat by moving her king to d4, allowing Wiesława to move her bishop to b1.
However, the pawns at the back didn't matter as after Mimoko moved her pawn to d6, she was only a few moves away from queening. Wiesława wasn't going to just let it happen though and moved her king to e6, yet Mimoko countered by simply moving her pawn to c5. Wiesława gritted her teeth and moved her king to d7, watching as Mimoko instantly captured the pawn at b7 with her bishop. "Damn monster! I'm not letting you sweep us!" she fumed in her mind as she captured the pawn at a2 with her bishop.
Yet ironically enough, that move just guaranteed her loss as Mimoko instantly saw the winning line and moved her king to e5. At this point, Wiesława saw it too and began to tremble. Yet pride prohibited her from resigning, thus she played on by moving her bishop to b1.
"Not going to give in? Well, that's admirable in it's own right, but it will be over soon," Mimoko thought as she moved her pawn to c6. "Check."
That one line from Mimoko ironically ended up igniting Wiesława's fighting spirit and anger even more. "Just 'Check'!? THAT'S IT!? You don't even have any other words!? Alright bitch, I'm kicking your ass!" she fumed in her mind as she moved her king to e8.
But the threat was empty as Mimoko was the one moves away from winning, which she inched ever so closer to doing by moving her pawn to d7. Wiesława promptly moved her king to e7, but as soon as Mimoko moved her pawn to c7, she began to tremble once more.
"Are you shitting me... ARE YOU SHITTING ME!? SHE'S GONNA QUEEN, DAMMIT!" she thought as she captured the pawn at d7 with her king.
Sure enough, Mimoko immediately moved her pawn to c8 and promoted it to a queen, forcing Wiesława's king to e7. She then moved her queen to e6, sending the king to d8, and after moving her king to d6, it was mate in one.
"Monster... The hell did you just enter the scene for? To assert your dominance!? You only started playing in tournaments a month ago, yet you're already some superstar!? Must be the damn maestro. You're her daughter, so I guess she planned all this shit out! Evil bitch!" Wiesława fumed in her mind as she moved her pawn to h5.
"Checkmate, good game," Mimoko nodded as she moved her queen to d7, winning the game.
As she extended her hand, Wiesława immediately slapped it away. "I don't acknowledge you, ya damn monster. You weren't even a factor a month ago. Fuck you and your evil bitch of a mother," Wiesława fumed as she got up and stormed away.
Mimoko somberly sighed and began resetting the board. While it may have been immature and impolite, Wiesława's attitude towards her was natural. Mimoko had just started playing competitively a little more than a month ago, and already it had affected the chess world greatly.
"So she's just like Nanya-chan... Am I just going to ruin the fun everyone was having by playing?" Mimoko somberly thought.
Said thoughts were interrupted by Daria gently putting her hand on her shoulder, her warm smile telling her it was alright.
"Okaa-chan... Thank you... But I'm punishing you for that abomination you played! What were you thinking!? Have Tanabe-kun and Iori-chan corrupted you!?" Mimoko fumed in her mind as she shot Daria a glare.
Daria was able to understand the message and began nervously smiling before speed walking away to watch the men's team.
"WAIT! Don't think you can escape!" Mimoko fumed in her mind as she handed in her scoresheet and took off after her.
Thanks in no small part to Okisato's actions the night before, Japan had beat Poland 4-0 with ease, extending their perfect win streak. However, things were still up in the air in the men's section.
