Chapter 18:
To the day when I will finally look forward to Tomorrow
Ever since birth, she didn't have a proper family. She was "born" artificially in a laboratory because the balance between male and female in The Hub had been thrown off.
"Mori" was the name given to her, it would make you think that maybe those eyes really were made with that name in mind.
The lack of somebody to look after her also meant she had to be taken to an orphanage. The cases where both parents died within 18 years after having a child were incredibly rare. Cases of abandoned children didn't exist.
Since orphanages existed solely for the victims of that disaster, it is not surprising that there were few and pretty lonely.
But that didn't affect her for too long, since she was created and modified to reach adulthood within 5 years. That was their way of not burdening society with unloved children when rebalancing gender distribution.
By the time she became an adult, she was already well trained for her job, and she had already learned about the secrets of The Hub.
People "born" through the technology of The Hub had some degree of control over the living city. This means that they also had access to a lot of information that would normally remain hidden.
Because of this ability, she could never live a normal life.
Some guy in a suit: "You shall not divulge anything you know about our God, and you shall continue to work for the sake of the city and take responsibility for those test subjects."
Mori: "Yes, sir!"
So, from tomorrow, this is how I will be living my days...
She was not the only one living like this, but there was something special about her.
Maybe it was because she was able to control The Hub better, or maybe she just happened to stumble upon something well hidden, but she became hooked on those romance movies from 20000 years ago. A form of entertainment that was lost with time
While everyone else would entertain themselves by going on walks everywhere around the line, she would just stay inside and enjoy old media.
...
50 years passed like this, and her perception of the world changed step by step until she was completely unable to relate to any of the residents.
At first her heart would flutter whenever a new eccentric victim was in her care, but those feelings would quickly fade when the victim started to fit into the society. It didn't take long for her to lose those expectations and just go into a work routine.
Her dream of living one of those exaggerated love stories was already gone by the time she took him in her care.
A victim who doesn't even want to give his name sure is something, but he will just decide on a new one once he gets used to this place. I doubt he will take more than a month to fit in.
Those were her initial thoughts about the depressed-looking guy she had been put in charge of.
Never would she have expected him to be so headstrong as to remind her of those movies she loves watching.
His inability to adapt in the first 2 weeks was already pretty impressive, but when she saw him fall to his knees in front of the memorial, she felt like she was in one of those movies.
From that moment, she knew what she had to do, or at least she thought she did, but those movies don't portray the slow-paced, frustrating, clumsy way that a relationship progresses in real life.
Trying this fast, intense, sometimes over-the-top thing she had learned from movies caused misunderstandings that led to a lot of trouble.
Even so, she didn't dislike this kind of drama. She hoped that her life could continue like this tomorrow.
