Chapter 32:
Fragments of Eternity
The silence after the commander's proposal seemed impossible. Each member of the group knew they were dealing with something much bigger than they had imagined. The “Aurora Project” was not just a network of power, it was a monster disguised as a promise of eternal life, and now it was ready to devour everything that was left.
“What do you want, exactly?” Lara asked, her voice firm, but her heart beating fast. She felt a lump tightening in her throat, fear already starting to take over.
The commander, with his impassive expression, seemed in no hurry.
“I have information about your loved ones.” He smiled, but it was an empty, calculating smile. “They are at risk. All of you. That is the price of fighting the system. And I cannot guarantee anyone's safety if you do not cooperate.”
Dante moved quickly, going to Lara, and grabbing her arm. It was impossible to ignore the warning look she gave him. She knew what he was thinking. What “Project Aurora” would do to manipulate them, to ensure their submission.
“And what do you think we’re going to do?” Dante asked, his eyes narrowed but his face impassive.
The commander shrugged, as if preparing for the worst.
“I don’t need you to accept now. Time will do the work for me. But I can guarantee one thing: if you decide not to follow my proposal… your friends and family will suffer the consequences.” He took a step forward, staring at each member of the group. “That includes your loved ones, Lara. Believe me, I know very well who you love.”
Lara felt a wave of anger and despair. The man was threatening her mother, her only family. But she couldn’t give in. She couldn’t let him know how vulnerable she was.
“I won’t give in,” Lara said, her voice stronger now. “We can defeat him without this.” The commander smiled cynically, his expression softening, as if he had been expecting this reaction.
“I’ll leave you to think about this.” He turned, his footsteps echoing as he walked away. “My terms will become clearer soon.”
When he had completely walked away, the group fell silent, his words still hanging heavy in the air.
A Personal Threat
Hours later, as the group prepared to move forward with their plan, something unexpected happened. Lara received a message on her communication device, something that seemed to come directly from “Project Aurora” itself. The screen flashed with a warning:
“We have your mother, Lara. And you know what can happen if you don’t cooperate. Don’t force your hand.”
Lara felt her heart freeze, her fingers trembling as she held the device. The fear she had tried to hide was now palpable. Her mother… was in danger. The last person she still loved, the last person she could protect.
