Chapter 16:

The Vile Trek

A New Perspective

Seeing the light fade in someone's eye after having shot them down is an experience no one can forget. When you take someone's life, you rip away all of the history that led to this person's existence; sacrifices, opportunities, families, goals, and dreams. All of it means nothing when their body hits the ground. It's never easy. It makes no difference about how you do it; keeping your distance with a gun, or getting close and personal with a knife. Adrenaline may be rushing through your veins, but it's only a matter of time before reality sets in and you realize the destruction you've caused. For the greater good? For your own good? Nothing's changed. Death doesn't discriminate, but by finishing someone off before they were meant to go, the burden now lies in your hands.
With all these people running around trying to kill him, Riley has no choice but to defend himself by means of eliminating others. It pained him deeply when he had to kill countless people who weren't even in control of their actions. His hatred for the New Light only grew, for years his only goals were to protect people and live his life, now, crowds of people were being sent to die to protect someone who refused to fight for themself. Riley thought about Q and his squad, wondering if they were having the same difficulties as he was. They'd been training in the army for a long time, having gone on many missions and most likely having killed several people in the process, but this was something no one had ever seen before. The red flashes in the civilians' eyes didn't stop even when they died.

Having heard that Spark had found something, both of the other groups started to pack up their posts and make their way over to the fated corner. Grant finally removed himself from the ledge he'd glued himself to, to protect his allies, Ike still watching the staircase, shooting anyone who appeared with a weapon and intentions to harm them. By now, a massive pile of dead bodies had accumulated at the corner of the stairs that turned to head to the roof. Getting through all those bodies would be hard enough on its own, but with a skilled soldier at the top waiting for anyone to pop their heads into the open, reclaiming the roof would prove to be impossible. But if you can't get up, you certainly can't get down. Not being able to go back down the way they came up, Ike and Grant would have to escape to another building. After Grant removed the excessive attachments from his rifle, he reached back into his backpack and grabbed a one-time-use gun that he used to shoot a zip line to the adjacent housing unit. Grant also pulled out two handles to cross the line and a pistol of his own which he strapped to his vest. The two flew across the zip line while dodging fire from the mob, cleared their way from this new unit, and made their way over to join Spark and Riley in the corner of the facility.

Back in the middle of the facility, a large portion of the mob surrounded the one-story corner store whose roof Q and Spyder standard themselves on. Some of the people were trying to lift the ladder Q'd knocked off of the wall and hold it up so they could climb up to them, others used the bodies of all the people they had to kill as a ramp to climb up to them on the roof. Each of them was holding off one side of the roof when they got the call from Spark. Their focus then shifted from holding off wave upon wave of attackers to getting out of their position and meeting up with the rest of the group. Being completely surrounded, one idea came to Spyder's mind, he waited for a moment when the mob briefly let up in their assault, when he reached into his bag and pulled out a couple of grenades, tossing one over to Q without having pulled the pin. When ready, they pulled the pin at the same time, dropping the grenades into the large crowds of attackers. After the explosions, they quickly ran over to Spyder's side of the roof, jumping off and onto the pile of dead civilians, sliding down without getting hurt. Once on the ground, they made no mistake in getting up quickly and hurriedly making their escape to the corner, focusing on not getting shot rather than returning fire and unnecessarily killing even more people. Using any building they could find to their advantage, they were able to safely make their way to the rest of the group without being harmed. Arriving at the group, they'd lost most of the mob that had been following them, a sense of urgency instilled itself as they could all hear the mob making their way over in the distance, but for now, they weren't in any imminent danger.
