Chapter 17:

Hole In The Wall

A New Perspective

 "We're all here now. Spark, you told us you found something, what is it?"

 "Riley and I were looking around, and while he was holding those people off, I found a little red button flashing in the corner; that same weird way that those people's eyes had been flashing. I pushed it a few minutes ago after I called you over, and now..." Trailing off, Spark pointed to the opening that had appeared on the side of the bright white wall. "If we're looking for the head of the New Light, I don't think this could be anything else, right?"

With no better trail to follow, the group decided to head toward the hole in the wall before the mob could catch up to them. With their guns in hand, they all crept through the mouth of the hole. The bright atmosphere provided by the facility quickly faded; walls of sheet metal lined with bolts and shifty lighting gave way to an ominous mood. The moment they had all cleared the opening, the wall had sealed itself shut behind them, returning to its original position. Paying little attention to the fact that they had no escape route, they kept on marching with one common goal in mind. The group kept walking as they passed through staircases, long halls, and other corridors, many twists and turns in the path, and even a few changes in terrain, but they still couldn't find anything. After moving forward for all this time a few of the guys started to let their guards down. Without noticing, Grant, at the back of the pack had stepped on a loose tile that sent a thin wall of energy springing up from the ground, splitting his body in half. No one even noticed until the thud of his body hitting the ground echoed through the metal walls, simultaneously both falling on his face and his back. As Riley turned to react, he got careless with his footing, stepping on another loose tile that sent him to an enclosed room rather than split him in half.

Disoriented from his sudden teleportation, Riley struggled to hastily make his way back to his feet. He started looking for his allies, but they were nowhere to be seen. From this small box of a room, he was both powerless and useless. The only gun he had left was the one he'd hidden on his body, the one from Earth. After a few minutes of assessing his situation, he heard a faint voice call out to him before a portion of the wall gave way to another door. This door proved that the room was somehow connected to the rest of the facility and not some teleportation deathtrap. A man appeared in the hole in the wall, making his way over to Riley; assuming that this man was one of if not the main leader of the New Light, he reached for his concealed pistol, firing a couple of shots directly at his body that seemed to bounce off of him without doing any damage.

 "Metal bullets, haven't seen those in a while... I guess that means you must be the one I'm looking for. The reincarnate."

Seeing that his gun didn't work on him, Riley tried to charge this strange man, his words confirming his position as the head of the New Light. As he went in for a physical attack, the man didn't budge. No matter what he did, Riley wasn't capable of touching him, like an invisible forcefield surrounded this man. Backing off, Riley was frustrated and confused;

 "Explain! You lead the New Light, don't you? Or are there more of you like Edok said there were before I ripped his life away!"

 "First of all, I see you've met my forcefield, truly a wonderful little piece of technology." The man said in a cheery tone, clearly not phased by the attempt on his life or any of the deaths that took place in the facility. "And yes, I am Agoren, leader of the New Light. But I will say, most of the information we gave Edok was false, we gave him one small mission and he couldn't even complete it, he had a sick need for revenge anyway, so I chose not to monitor him. Lucky for you, I do care to explain. The Empire is currently in shambles and I'll see that a new ruler ascends to the throne. In fact, I already sent out someone to assassinate Austin, I believe you've already met the guy. And another thing about that pesky Emperor, he didn't tell you everything! You know that machine that brought you here?" Riley nods, skeptical about his words, but interested to see where he's going.

"Well, it can also send you home. If you haven't figured it out yet, your soul is your ticket to travel through the machine. You've been reborn and brought back here, if you relinquish your identity as someone from this world to me, you'll have no connection to this world and be sent home. Plus, your soul would indeed make me immortal; the essence of someone who's overcome death would make me the most powerful being in the world."

At that moment, Riley was an emotional wreck. He wanted to act for the greater good, but the prospect of going home to see Mary and his family again was weighing heavy on his mind. As Riley continued his conversation with Agoren, he turned on the microphone function on his earpiece so the others could listen in and gain any useful information.

 "So Agoren, this was all your call? Why? After helping all those people from Hencia, why sentence them all to death."

 "Yeah, you could say that. And you and your buddies did try to get in my way on multiple occasions, so the easy way to handle you would be to have them kill you; and by what you've told me, those contact lenses must've worked perfectly. I guess the eyes are indeed the gateway to the soul." Agoren pauses, scanning Riley, trying to devise a new plan.

 "How about you give me your gun there, and I'll deactivate my forcefield. I won't kill you, I do need you alive after all. Or, I just leave you trapped in here and let you die."
