Chapter 5:

A normal sleep pod

Why Are You Still Awake?

In the middle of the woods stood a strange building. As our car approached it, the door began to glow in a grid pattern. The cubes inside the grid, pieces of the door, swiftly disintegrated one after another within the blink of an eye. My dad drove straight into this building which i assumed to be a small garage, but got caught off guard when the inside appeared to be larger than the outside. Oh the garage door returned. Dad parked the car in an empty spot, there were other cars in here, perhaps some of them being the ones we had seen earlier. We got out of the car, and walked into an elevator. An elevator? But from the outside there didn't seem to be any floors. Dad took out some strange card and swiped it through the scanner, the floor number appeared at the top and kept increasing at an incredible speed. 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25

The elevator finally stopped at the 78th floor, i wouldn't even have realized that if it weren't for the elevator doors vanishing into thin air, the ride was that smooth. I stepped outside of the elevator and found myself in a grand lobby. What is this place? A hotel?
"Well looks like we arrived a little early. Let's just kill some time in the meantime"Dad plopped himself into a super comfy looking sofa and plugged in his headphones. I already wanted to try testing the sofa out for myself, but i still have no clue what we're doing at a place like this?

Out of nowhere mom approached me from behind and gave me an embrace
"We're gonna meet someone important to dad, so make sure you behave well, okay sweetie?"
"Y-yeah, i will" "..." "I'll give it to you for one last time, okay mom? I'm not a kid anymore" I hugged her back. Embarrassing as always. Then i broke free from her embrace "Someone important to dad? You mean a friend?"
"You'll find out shortly. This is also the first time i'm meeting him"
Mom let out a chuckle. Wait, how am i supposed to behave well if i don't even know who i'm meeting? Sighs. I'm not very good with talking to strangers. I sat myself down on a sofa next to dad's. Huh? Oh my god. This feels like heaven. This sofa is probably made from synthetic fiber Gogno- uh, i forgot the name, screw it. But oh my god this is the most comfy sofa I've ever sat on, a hundred times better than the one we have at home, i could sleep forever on this. Wait that's a good idea, i'm just gonn-

"Excuse me sir, your family will be there in 10 minutes", a humanoid A.I walked to us and spoke to my dad
"Uh, huh?" "Uh alright. Come on everyone, let's go greet him", dad looked like he didn't wanna get off the sofa. Neither did I
"Excellent sir, just hold onto me, and I could take everyone to him in a second"
"No thank you pal, we will walk there ourselves"
"B-but..." I was going to disagree but i guess i could use a little exercising, and take a look at all the stuff they have here kinda

The lobby was huge, displayed on the the wooden frames on the walls were paintings made using distinct techniques from different historical eras. There were food dispensers everywhere, from savory and sweet dishes to beverages, as well as courts for various sports, but nobody was in sight. I drew my attention to a spot at a corner, there were a few kids my age trying out the UltraVR devices, and their parents watching over them. So there were people here, but i guess they're just visitors like us. Can't say i'm not jealous of those kids, i wanna try watching a movie or play games in 8D, but my parents probably wouldn't let me join them. I'm too shy to give it a shot anyway

We arrived at a long corridor, there were rooms on both sides. So this is really a hotel then? And people are living inside those rooms? Dad kept walking, and i followed after him, eyeing from one room to another. If there are that many people living here, why is nobody using the facilities? Perhaps they have all the necessities in their rooms, which is kinda hard to believe, judging the distance between each door is only like 3 meters. Or maybe they use the same space warping technology like the garage above ground? Dad suddenly stopped

The wooden door opened by itself, somehow it wasn't the same technology used for the elevator door or or the garage door, but unlike certain doors, at least i didn't have to move a finger. Huh, the room was just as small as it was on the inside as it seemed on the outside. There was a set of table and chairs but nothing much in this room, other than the sleep pod in the center, not a Simulacrum pod, just a normal one

CLANK!

The pod made a loud noise, cold steam profusely releasing from it. The cold steam made me shiver, now i really wished we were back at the car, or the comfy sofa from earlier. I really couldn't handle the cold in here. Or at least that's my excuse. Dwarfing the cold was my fear of not knowing who i was going to meet and how should i greet th-

"My boy! I didn't expect to see you so soon! You came to see me eh?"
My thoughts were interrupted by a joyful voice coming from beside the pod
"Uh yeah... i was always planning to be there when you came back" "And, how should i put it..."
Dad seemed to be having a hard time speaking to the man before him. I turned my face to the direction the man was standing. He was wearing a buttoned-up ocean blue cardigan, and dark brown trousers, both seemed to be made from some kind of high-quality synthetic fibers. Wait? He... looks familiar...

"How are you doing my boy! And how's the kid now?" "Oh? Is this your second kid?"
"Uh no, it's... my first" "How are you feeling? It's been... a long long time"
"Still didn't clear up as much of the clutters in my head as much as i'd hoped, much clearer than before though! It was a good sleep"
"Well, i'm, glad to hear that" "I was thinking we could wait a few days if you weren't in a clear state of mind, and i'd hate to break the news to you, but you deserve to know it now. That..."
I really don't understand what's going on. Did mom know about this? But that's not what mom said... Is it really him...? Grandpa?
