Chapter 4:
Why Are You Still Awake?
SPLASH!
"Oh god! Are you alright?" "It's okay honey, we can get a new one, i'm just glad you weren't hurt. But remember to keep a firm grip on the fishing rod next time, okay?"
"I'm sorry, i was distracted, and afraid kinda. It seemed to be a big fish..." "Can we try to get it back?" "Never mind that..." I stared helplessly at the fishing rod as it was being dragged further and further away
"But wow! Would you look at that, a big fish it was indeed! Haha"
"Oh sure, Ask away!"
"Huh? But that's not what i-" sighs "Nothing"
"The adults out there other than your mom and I?"
"I'm not that curious, it's just, a random thought, but i guess"
"Well... They do, everything?" "Sorry for my confusing response, i'm trying to think of something" "To my knowledge, most people would either spend all day traveling to every corner of the universe across space and time, or sleep in their pods" "I'm sorry if it still sounds vague to you, but they're not very pleasant things to get hooked on" "But hey, i think there's a pretty active air hockey club somewhere in our city!"
"Dad?"
"Um, huh? Yeah?"
"It just occurred to me that... i never really knew what your childhood was like"
"Oh my childhood? Let me remember, when i was your age... Give me a moment, it's been so long i can't really..." "Ah yeah, i was living with my dad, and i guess my mom and grandad for a couple of years. I didn't really have a whole lot of friends, those kids always looked like they had their own businesses" "It just wasn't that interesting haha"
"I see..." I kinda feel bad for him "How did you get to school?"
"Just like how you do now, by the air monorail. The school system hasn't really had many changes recently"
"The air monorail always arrives late for me, especially when classes are over"
"Oh? I don't remember them being late. I recall they were always on time for me, and then everybody including me, just hurriedly got on board without taking one look at the other students" "But i do remember wishing it would go faster haha"
Huh? So it used to be punctual. I wonder if there's any significant meaning behind the change
"Be cautious, avoid burning yourself, sweetie"
"Don't worry mom..." Such an ancient looking grill, but i would be surprised if our family had anything but old-fashioned equipment
"Ahh!" And i burned myself, great
"Oh dear..."
"It's okay mom, it's nothing serious, i'll find myself some cool wat-"
A sink appeared out of thin air right before my eyes as soon as my mother snapped her fingers. It should be normal she's able to do that but just standing there, flabbergasted. Actually i really need to treat my burn. Oh phew, there's running water
"You're still my adorable and clumsy baby after all. Go get some rest, sweetie. You've probably exhausted yourself from fishing with your dad. Don't worry, I can take over from here"
"Thanks mom" Huh, there is an extra fish remaining in the bucket. Are mom and dad not going to grill it as well?
"I mean, i guess, just like the other times really" Should i tell them there shouldn't be a difference in the quality nor the taste of food no matter where we are in the um, modern world?'
,Darling, this time our baby did such a good job at grilling the fishes,'
"Oh really? That's awesome!"
"Yeah... until i burnt myself" I turned my head to look outside the car window, the big lake seemed to be shrinking more and more, until it's out of sight, as the clouds overhead were darkening "It's going to rain a second time today?"
"Oh, it seems so, doesn't it make you feel lucky that we're in a car right now?"
"Huh?" What is he talking about? This car? I mean, i now get why he prefers travelling by car, but as for myself, I would still prefer something faster and more convenient
"We're all dry and comfortable in here, not affected by the rain"
"Yeah, but dad, isn't like, any form of transportation could do that?"
"And the transportation we're currently in is this car. Sometimes it's the mundane things in life that makes life worth it, right?"
"I guess you're right" "..." The mundane things in life... The mundane things in life? Like going fishing?
