Chapter 19:
The Robot That Caught The Human Disease
Yui closed her eyes as the air flapped her clothes. The memories of Haruto sank into her head. Why didn't she believe him? Why did she let her emotions win? All the memories she wanted to forget about him came in.
“I'm kidding, I'm one of the rare people here who have perfect balance… and rebellious enough to break some laws.”
Yui snapped her eyes as she caught the road routes, twisting in the air and adjusting herself to land near a road route. As she got closer, she extended her leg out, hoping she would reach near enough to activate the air in them. She had one shot to make it happen or die on it but at this point, she didn't mind death. As her feet grace, it activated, flinging her back up and as she saw Haruto do, she pushed herself forward, travelling the railroad with one foot. She let out a laugh. “Ah! I did it! I did it Haruto….”
Her face switch at the realization. There wasn't any Haruto to save her this time. The realization had her balance toppled but at least, she fell into the ground. She lay on the ground, flipping to look at the sky. When he changed the sky for her. She felt like crying again but this time she held it back. A criminal like her doesn't deserve to shed tears.
She got off the ground and continued on her path, if she left the domain, she would live in repentance and throw herself at the nearest animals but instead, she saw Rem there, sitting as if waiting.
“You?” She looked at Rem who had his hand behind, leg crossed. He turned to her and clapped his hands together. “Well, well, I knew I would find you here.”
She backed away, glaring at him. “I know I did something wrong, but I also suffered! I suffered a lot! Aren't you… a robotic?”
Rem nodded, a little amused.
“You are a traitor!” She pointed an accusing finger, unable to believe the insane people here.
“I know.” Rem looked at the fake tree, momentarily closing his eyes.
“How can you turn me in when you are human too?” She can't understand his audacity.
“I did extend my beautiful warning to you, and you ignored it. I told you… to leave but you didn't. You didn't realize you are surrounded by artificial intelligence.”
“You mean Type A and B-”
“No, I meant Haruto.” He shook his head and corrected.
“... Haruto is an artificial intelligence?” Yui repeated.
“Hmm, as a matter of fact, everyone in Cyber is a robot that's why none of them care about people like us because they can't actually feel anything. You don't think it's odd? That they all cry when watching movies, laugh together? They are so busy studying human emotions that they go to school for it. All of that to keep each other in check that's why a mole is hard to blend in but you somehow did... I can't believe you didn't notice. There were many other signs like when Haruto messed up with the sunrise, nobody made an issue about it. They go on with their day like nothing happened.” Rem asked as pointed toward the city buildings. “Because nothing truly happened for them. They don't feel pain-”
Kaito fleshed in her head.
“They aren't curious about the outside world because they know they can't feel emotions or weather.”
Yui opened her mouth just to close it. Haruto’s words rang into her head.
“Have you not noticed yet? Don't you see? Everything is fake! Everything and everyone is fake! Everyone here is pretending this is a good life. Do you not notice?”
“But Haruto? He cared-”
“Haruto is the biggest pretender of them all.” Rem remarked amused, using his leg to kick a pebble.
“I want to see and feel real rain. I want to see and feel the warm weather. I want to see and smell flowers. I want to see and feel cold. I want to feel human.”
Haruto… her core squeezed unexplainable as she held into it, saliva coming out of her. Rem nodded. “Since you stole Haruto's core, it should be near expiration.”
“It's so painful-” she fell into her knees, gasping for air.
He smirked as he watched her crawl on the ground, trying to find peace. He surrounded her like a shark looking at its prey. “I came to watch you die with his heart… then take… take Haruto’s precious heart back.”
Yui couldn't even feel bitter anymore. She did this to herself. Her foolishness led her here. “I can tell you care about him a lot.”
Rem stopped moving as if the words struck a nerve
“Rem. I'll name you Rem.” Haruto tilted his head down at Rem who was beaten down by one of Haruto's classmates. “You know Rem, Eisuke is allergic to carrots. You can put that in the next order.”
Haruto smiled widened at Rem as pulled himself from the ground, staring at the boy who always looked the same for three years, never aging or growing. “But, he can't be allergic to anything…?”
“Exactly. He will get mad that he is reminded he is robot.” Haruto chuckled as he stood up. “That what he deserves for bullying you but if you can't endure the beating, you don't have to do kitchen duties.”
“No, I would like my revenge.” Rem sat on his knee. For the first time, a robot offered him the opportunity to get revenge and named him.
Haruto grinned.
Rem couched down to the ground.
“Rem! Because of you, I'll never accept a core request.” Haruto leaned on the kitchen counter, leaning his chin on his spread arms at the older man. “I can't allow others to hurt them just like it hurts you.”
Rem opened his eyes, look down at the Robotic who hurt his master. “And… he cared a lot about you.”
Master, please request for your robotic. You need her core, trust me, she will be happy to give it away if she knew it's saving your life.” Rem begged, he didn't want to see his master die. He didn't care who died. If he had to sacrifice a human for a piece of metal, he would.,
"It took many years to get him to accept a core..." Yet… he failed his master by not killing her immediately and taking her core. He thought it would be amusing to watch a core not knowing it's being sacrificed…
Yui laid on the ground, unable to hold her posture but she held her heart as another memory invaded her. She wished Haruto was alive so she can actually beat him up for lying to her like this. “I'll never forgive him.”
“And he will not forgive you either.”
She spat out blood as she started to feel more and more out of it. Black dots started to fill her eyes, and she glared at him. Oh, she wished she actually got the revenge she deserves. On all of them then on Haruto. After she gets her revenge on him, she wanted to grab his hand and bring her along to their little journey that were ruined.
She turned on her back and basically stared at nothing. Rem placed his hand on the vault, and she stared at him for a moment. “Since you are dying, I'll have one last mercy on you."
"What is it?"
"Remember Yui, AI is here to guide humanity to the next stage of evolution.”
The words that used to lift her up before when she used to think she was an artificial intelligence was now just a foreboding harbinger of death to humanity as she took her last breath. She laughed bitterly. The last memory filled her mind.
“Those poor things... they may learn to be human, but it doesn't mean they are human." Yui muttered to Rem as her body finally went limp.
