Chapter 16:
Happy Birthday
Waking up with heavy eyes and feeling groggy, Aurora found herself intubated inside a mysterious machine. The glass surrounding her was extremely frosted, allowing visibility only from the inside, leaving those outside in the dark. She had no idea how she had ended up there; the last thing she remembered was leaving Wonder Tower after confronting Cláusio.
At the same moment, Eterrai exited the elevator he had previously entered, stepping into a vast space filled with tubes containing failed experiments. Among the various aberrations contained in the tubes were hybrids of humans and animals, bizarre creatures that combined human characteristics with wild beasts. Some had human bodies with animal heads, like wolves or lions, while others possessed animalistic limbs, such as sharp claws or sinuous tails. The eyes of these creatures reflected a mixture of intelligence and primal instinct, their unsettling gazes following Eterrai as he passed.
There were also amalgamations of humans and robots, beings that had been subjected to cybernetic experiments. Their bodies were a fusion of flesh and metal, with human parts replaced by mechanical components. Some exhibited robotic arms that glinted under the room's cold light, while others had parts of their faces covered by metallic masks that hid their residual humanity. The red glow of their cybernetic eyes and the constant hum of electronic circuits completed the appearance of these entities.
Additionally, there were combinations of robots and animals, machines that imitated organic life forms. These mechanical creations had animal silhouettes but were entirely made of metal and electronic components. There were robots with feline bodies, their joints moving with frightening fluidity, and metallic birds whose wings flapped slowly, emitting mechanical sounds. These robotic beings blended the precision of machines with the appearance of animals, creating an unsettling presence in the already somber environment.
As Eterrai passed by these creations, he felt the weight of the failures and the overambitious attempts that had led to the existence of these beings. Each tube represented a failed experiment, an attempt to push the boundaries of science and nature, resulting in aberrations that defied the very definition of life.
Observing the grim sight, Eterrai crossed the room, passing by the somber remnants of the failed scientific endeavors. Reaching the double doors at the end of the room, he entered a corridor lined with multiple doors. He headed for the only other set of double doors, aside from the ones he had just passed through, which seemed to lead to the main research area.
Upon entering, Eterrai found himself in a large chamber dominated by an enormous machine at the center. Whatever lay within the machine was obscured by its frosted glass, making it impossible for Eterrai to discern. Beside the enigmatic apparatus, Cláusio sat patiently, awaiting Eterrai's arrival.
— Finally, you arrived. It was getting boring waiting for you — Cláusio said, rising with an ironic smile.
— I had my suspicions, but now it makes sense. There was no way the girl who got emotional over that horrendous play was causing so much chaos. By the way, cad… — Eterrai began, but was interrupted.
— Aurora is in here — Cláusio said, pointing with his thumb to the machine at the center of the room.
— And why did you put her there? — Eterrai questioned, his eyes narrowing in suspicion.
— She discovered too much, and that's not all. I think she was starting to suspect everything else — Cláusio explained with a serious expression.
— What else? Besides abuse of authority and drug trafficking? — Eterrai asked, his voice laden with incredulity.
— I’m seeking eternal life… making the body stop deteriorating. The drugs were a test that I ended up profiting from to finance other means. I wanted to combine various types of genes to see if it solved the problem, but I couldn't. I tried with robotics… the three stooges aren't entirely robots with an AI running, there's a brain in there. Al never knew about this part, well… until now — Cláusio confessed.
— For what? You're young, why are you worried about old age? — Eterrai asked, confused.
— World domination — Cláusio replied, with an insane gleam in his eyes.
Eterrai looked at him with an expression of disgust and said, — That’s not even funny, man.
— Seriously, I want to build a world empire, but by the time I complete this plan, I'll be too old to rule everything — Cláusio continued, unaware of how absurd he sounded.
— That sounds like a lot of work. Why do you want to do this? — Eterrai insisted, trying to understand the motivation behind so much madness.
— Because I can…! — Cláusio exclaimed, his voice filled with determination.
In a matter of milliseconds, Eterrai drew his light weapon and shot Cláusio in the head. The impact was immediate and fatal.
— You couldn't even be a good villain — Eterrai muttered, watching Cláusio's body fall to the ground.
It was then that Eterrai realized that this was not the real Cláusio but a robot. Before worrying about that, he prioritized freeing Aurora. Determined, he broke the machine's glass and released Aurora. Seeing her, he was taken aback.
— What the hell! — Eterrai exclaimed. — Aurora, what happened? What did he do to you? Talk to me!
Aurora, still tired and feeling strange, looked at her own hand and wondered what it was. Her eyes widened upon seeing her reflection in one of the glass shards on the floor. Frightened, she asked Eterrai, — What is this? She stood up in desperation, forgetting her fatigue, and ran to a mirror on the table.
Upon seeing her reflection, Aurora let out a scream of horror. Her once vibrant hair was now completely white. Half of her skin had turned green, while the other half was black. Her eyes glowed an intense red, and one of her ears had transformed into a large bat ear. Additionally, a single wing, just the skeleton without feathers, emerged from the black part of her body.
— Why scream, my dear? — exclaimed a voice from the room, as if coming from a hidden speaker.
— Oh no! — said Eterrai, recognizing the voice.
— You didn’t think I would confront you face to face, did you? I know who you are, Eterrai. That’s not even your real name, correct? I know I stand no chance against you, but I'll tell you one thing: you better hurry and turn on the TV in the next 30 minutes or less. And, run to get out of there because the lab will explode in 2 minutes — Cláusio's voice echoed through the speaker.
Aurora, still in shock, cried in a corner, her tears reflecting the terror of the moment. Eterrai, realizing the urgency of the situation, approached her carefully, his voice taking on a calm and reassuring tone.
— Hey, girl. I know what you're going through, but we need to get out of here quickly — he said, trying to calm her. — Let's get out of here as fast as possible.
Aurora was still sluggish, as she hadn't fully recovered. Realizing this, Eterrai held her firmly and ran out the way they had come. They reached the elevator, and Eterrai pressed the button to ascend, his mind focused on the urgency of escaping the soon-to-explode lab. When the elevator doors opened, he entered with Aurora and waited as they ascended quickly.
As soon as the elevator reached the desired floor, the doors opened, revealing the room they had previously crossed. Eterrai continued running, crossing the room with quick and determined steps, Aurora in his arms. They reached the stairs, and Eterrai ascended the steps with agility despite the pressure of the situation.
When they finally reached the top of the stairs, Eterrai stopped abruptly. Before them stood several individuals, all aiming their weapons directly at them, their eyes filled with determination and ready to shoot. The situation seemed desperate, but Eterrai remained calm.
With a quick movement, he snapped his fingers. In an instant, a series of explosions echoed through the environment, turning the scene into absolute chaos. Smoke and debris filled the air as everyone inside was blown apart by the explosion.
The clock... sometime.
