Chapter 3:
Life Beat
“How was school today, my son?” my dad asked as we sat down for dinner.
“As usual, I’m doing great, Dad!”
“That’s my boy! Keep studying hard so you can become just like me! I’m really proud of this family. My daughter is already a rookie lawyer who’s won multiple cases in her first year. My wife is the CEO of one of the biggest tech companies in Japan. And next... it’s your turn, Ken!” he said proudly while eating.
In my family, everyone—except me—has a high-profile job.
My dad is one of the top surgeons in Japan. He’s even called ‘God’s Hand’ because every operation he performs is a success. His name often appears in newspapers and magazines. He’s been invited to talk shows to discuss medical topics with other top surgeons. Honestly, he almost feels like a celebrity to me.
And now, he wants me to follow in his footsteps.
“Dear, you shouldn’t put so much pressure on Ken. He’s still in high school. Maybe he’s still figuring out what he wants to do,” my mom said gently.
“No. Didn’t you see his academic record? He’s always at the top of his class. I believe he’ll succeed like I did. He shouldn’t waste his talent. The earlier he starts, the greater his future results will be,” my dad replied firmly.
The burden on my shoulders felt heavier with every word.
“Ken, didn’t you want to become a musician? I remember you saying that before,” my sister suddenly asked.
“Stop it, Nami. He already told me he gave up that childish dream and decided to follow my path,” said my dad.
“Right, Nami-neesan. I’m not the naïve kid you used to know.”
After dinner, I went to my room and started working on my homework. Once I finished, I continued with some self-study to prepare for tomorrow’s classes.
My dad once asked me why I didn’t go to prep school every day. I told him I needed time to finish homework and relax after school. As a compromise, I promised to attend prep school daily during the summer holidays.
Now, it’s already ten o’clock.
I should sleep.
As I lay in bed, memories from today flashed through my mind.
I still can’t forget Miyama-san’s mesmerizing piano performance.
How wonderful would it be... if I could play like that?
No.
I’ve already decided my future.
I’ll become like my dad.
I won’t tarnish my family’s name.
