Chapter 4:
Life Beat
On weekends, students my age usually spend their youth happily—hanging out with their partners, playing games, or watching movies.
But not me.
Reading books at the library has become my routine every weekend.
I feel at peace here.
I can concentrate better, away from distractions.
Today, what kind of book should I read?
Maybe this one. Its cover looks interesting.
It's about how people who once lived in poverty rose to become some of the wealthiest individuals in the world.
I might learn something useful from it.
As I found a seat and sat down, a strange man suddenly sat next to me.
I tried to ignore him, even though he was wearing a rather odd outfit.
“Young man, can I ask for your help?”
The man spoke up.
“How can I help you?” I replied, trying not to sound annoyed.
“Can you listen to this song and give me your review?” he said, handing me a pair of earbuds.
“Are you trying to scam me? Sorry, but can you leave me alone? I’m not interested in whatever this is.”
“Please, just this one request. I won’t bother you after this. I just want your opinion on the music.”
“Whatever, then.” I sighed and put on the earbuds.
The song began.
The intro… it felt so familiar.
It reminded me of better times.
And then the voice came in. I knew that voice.
I used to admire this singer so much when I still loved music.
I looked closer at the man beside me.
“Wait… are you Ryuji?” I asked, surprised.
“Yes. But keep your voice down,” he said calmly. “I’m just trying to get some honest feedback from the public on my new song. So, what do you think?”
“Honestly… it’s really good. But I think some of the lyrics could be adjusted to fit better with the rhythm. Still, overall—it’s a very good song!”
I couldn’t believe it. I was talking to Ryuji—my idol.
What kind of luck is this?
“Thanks, I’ll take that advice,” Ryuji said. “Do you have any other suggestions?”
“Maybe… try turning this into a duet with a female artist. It would sound more romantic that way. Just my opinion.”
“Great idea. I’m still looking for someone to collaborate with on this. Thanks again! Is there anything I can do for you in return? Ah—here’s a ticket to my concert next month. You can bring one more person with you.”
My heart skipped a beat.
I got a ticket to Ryuji’s concert.
I should be excited.
The old me would’ve screamed in joy.
But now… without her, it all feels meaningless.
That thought suddenly crossed my mind.
“Ryuji-san… can I ask for one more thing?”
“Sure. What is it?”
“Could you sign this paper?” I pulled a sheet from my bag.
“Of course! What name should I write it to?”
“Just write it to Yuka. And… could you add a few words of encouragement, too?”
