Chapter 1:
End of Despair
— Ah, here he comes.
A woman crouched atop a massive tower. It was tall enough to see the curvature of the planet. Her eyes were pitch black, as soulless as her pale skin. Her assassin’s clothes were as dark as her short hair. Her subtle grin was as menacing as her entire being.
In a world, or rather set of universes where gods and demigods were common, this was the human realm. It included every reality containing humans. The deities were all specialized in an emotion, concept, or constant across all or most universes.
The one we're looking at is Zetsu, the Goddess of Despair, one of the strongest deities in the human realm. Sure, there were other deities focused on despair, or what she would call cheap imitations. But one thing was certain: the strongest in that field overshadowed the weak.
It had always been this way. The strong were the most fit to rule over all others. The most common way to measure strength was to compare one to another in level of destruction. What Zetsu had been doing seconds ago was blowing up planets with her bare hands. Why? Because she was trying to call someone. Only a god would be worthy of another god's time.
The God of Havoc... he's not from the human realm. He's probably stronger than me, but I have to try.
Not only was she one of the strongest, she was also one of the oldest. Despair had always been there, fueling her power for billions of years. One could say she was just trying to get attention, because she was bored. But she had a reason for doing it. A reason only she could understand. Selfishness? Eh, maybe.
Let's see... one million light-years per second? No, two million.
Something or someone was approaching her trillions of times faster than light. Since the gods’ appearances were based on their realms, the God of Havoc shouldn’t look human, right? Correct. He was a cosmic, metallic worm that devoured planets and even galaxies when he was hungry enough. He was nicknamed the Destroyer.
The gods could sense each other's presence from galaxies away. The worm was closing in fast. She had less than a second to react.
More than enough time.
She jumped from the tower she was crouching on, reaching space faster than light. Her leap caused the planet to turn inside out and explode. The giant worm swallowed what was left of the planet. As it passed by, she summoned a huge metal knight. It had only a head and two arms. She punched the worm so hard that it was sent flying and bent over slightly.
The solar system they were in wasn't really a solar system at all, because the center of gravity was a supermassive black hole. There were thousands of planets orbiting it at random speeds and sizes. The giant worm collided with a dozen of them, splitting them in half and killing any chance of anyone living on them.
The Goddess of Despair followed it and landed on top of it. She took out a black dagger from her waist. There was a white light coming out of it. She tried to pierce the worm's shell. It cracked a little, but before she could damage it any further, the God of Havoc flew towards the black hole and turned to the right before hitting it. Zetsu was sent flying towards the sphere by the momentum.
A black hole, really? Did you think this was enough to get rid of me?
Before she hit it, she stopped mid-air, or mid-space. Her senses were a bit disoriented, but she could see the worm passing behind the planets to hide itself, then turning towards her again. In less than a milissecond, it was close enough to her and sucked everything in front of it with its mouth. The gravitational pull was so intense that the entire black hole was consumed.
She was now inside the worm. Since she was a goddess, she could see anything in the pitch black darkness. It was still metallic on the inside, but now she had time to test her dagger. She pierced part of its insides, making it fly faster in pain. That knife could inflict a god-killing poison. When anyone under its influence died, they would be erased from all universes and timelines.
The worm spat her body out with such force that she pierced planets and stars light years away. She stopped on the surface of a neutron star. Then, she hurled it and many other nearby stars and planets toward a single point. The God of Havoc appeared right where she aimed. They collided with it and vaporized instantly.
Damn it! I thought only his mouth could devour things.
It approached faster than she expected. She only had time to summon her knight and close the worm's mouth before it could eat her again. She punched its face hard enough to fold itin on itself and fly to another galaxy. She grabbed its scales and flew next to him. Then, she used her doll to punch it several times, causing it to collide with planets, stars, black holes, and finally reach the next galaxy.
The worm opened its mouth.
Shit, it's doing that thing!
The God of Havoc began his final attack. Zetsu flew away as fast as he could. He sucked in his surroundings harder than a black hole. The entire galaxy began to collapse around him, being pulled into his maw. Then, the range increased. Tens of galaxies away, hundreds.
Zetsu finally reached the edge of the observable universe. She passed through it, but the suction increased even more and she was affected. She couldn't get out of its reach, so she panicked a bit. She felt what she was good at provoking: despair.
Before she knew what was going to happen to her, a green and pink portal appeared right where she was passing through and she teleported away from that universe.
— Yo! That was dangerous, even for you.
— Lust...
She quickly regained her composure, seeing that she was out of danger, thanks to her friend. He was a tall, muscular man. Not an ordinary man, of course. He was the God of Lust. He had short, dark green hair and pink eyes. He wore a fancy coat, showing off his chest and abs. He seductively reached out to her, trying to help her up.
— Thanks... I had many ways of escaping that, but despair clouds our senses.
— You are the best person to say that. So, that universe is gone?
— Probably. But the God of Havoc is still alive.
— We're not strong enough to beat him yet. He is probably stronger than any god in the human realm.
— Yeah... Lust, are we good to go to that place?
— What place? Oh, the universal hub? I don't think so. The God of Distortion is still alive, the Observation family too...
— Are you sure they're enough to stop us? Aren't you, uh... scared?
— Me, scared? Isn't a sin allowed to commit another sin? You know, that old man and his granddaughter are unpredictable to any deity, including us. And the distorted one is... even more unpredictable, in an unintentional way. There's a reason why the only thing they fear is him.
— Unpredictability can always be defeated with enough strength.
— You're not strong enough either, Zetsu. When you can defeat that worm, maybe, who knows?
— Alright, you've convinced me. Let's wait for the lines to tie together. When they're done... we'll have all the universes to ourselves.
