Chapter 10:
The Legacy of Lost Magic
The space around was completely white as Bard walked and scanned the empty area in hopes of seeing something.
What is this place?...
Far out, he caught a glimpse of a hooded figure.
"Excuse me! I'm so glad to see someone, what is this place?"
Bard had managed to run close to it and at a better view, the person carried a wooden staff with a red orb. Their hood obscured their face and the rags around their body were black and flowy to the ground.
"Are you unworthy?"
The man's response made Bard's heart beat fast, the pulses ringing in his ears.
Unworthy...?
Everything began to shine a blinding light as the entire scene disappeared.
The sun seeped through the room as Bard was sleeping soundly under the quilted covers, but Lulu smacked him over the head, interrupting the peace.
"I'm up! I'm up!"
Bard swatted Lulu away like an annoying fly as he stood up. She tells him to get dressed and meet with Iris outside of town for training.
"Training?"
"Yeah, something about the magic stuff."
As he was preparing to take his leave, that same weighted feeling came over him.
Who was that man...
Bard took Fern out of his stall and galloped through town. As he reached the edge, there was a small figure waving at him by a tall oak tree in the field.
Iris greeted him with a huge smile on her face. "Are you ready for your training?"
He jumps off Fern and walks up to Iris hesitantly.
"Yeah...about that."
His poor attitude knitted Iris' eyebrows into a frown as she zapped his arm.
"Ow! That hurt! What was that for?"
"Magic tip number one: You must believe in yourself, Bard! Our state of mind can largely influence our abilities especially if you are a beginner. You need to stop doubting yourself and accept that you can do magic!"
Bard sits on a nearby rock looking away from Iris as her energy was overwhelming. Iris sighed in defeat seeing how gloomy he looked. She slowly sits right in front of him, catching his view.
"I'm sorry...I actually didn't pass the instructor exam, but I want to help you, Bard."
Bard chuckled a little as Iris shared that bit of failure.
"I take myself very commonly and not more than that. It's just me and Fern going about in the world, but now that I have these powers...I don't feel....." His words trailed off as he remembered the dream and Iris answered.
"Worthy... You don't feel worthy of your powers?"
Bard nodded as Iris stood up understanding the situation a bit more.
"Being a wizard used to be respected back in the day, but that has been changed. I never thought I'd say this, but, I'm glad to have met someone who's just like me without the need of hiding my magic. You may not look like it now, but I'm sure you'll be a great wizard soon enough."
Her words are like a breath of fresh air for Bard as he looks up at her, the wind picking up highlighting the moment.
I guess this is my life now. A life with magic.
