Chapter 59:

Interlude II Korean town investigation

Devil hunting chronicles of the impossible city.

The sun was finally illuminating the plaza in Korea Town, and the corpse that had rested at its center was finally moved away. The Argia police department moved to isolate the apartment much to the disappointment of its inhabitant. Even if people were more than desperate to go back to their homes, they were all quite anxious in the middle of the plaza. There were gunshots and multiple casualties, and the police had no doubt that the brothers' gang had been assaulted the night before by a small armed group of professionals.

The inspector on the scene, a young woman named Eva, was outside of the entrance staring at the center of the plaza where another police car arrived. She looked quite tense as she saw a man come out of the car and walk towards her.

"As expected, everything came to a close all by itself. Give me the rundown, and let's take a look" The man walking toward her had a jolly tone as he spoke. He was a tall and lanky gentleman wearing a white long trenchcoat, but his features were slightly human. His face was thin and with a short neck and long hooked nose, his red hair was messy and long, falling down in a ponytail, and he wore a pair of thick glasses as well, but the most notable feature about him was his longhorns, similar to those of a goat that grew from his messy hair. He walked strangely as well, as he had no shoes since his feet were the hooves of a goat rather than human feet. His walking posture left him leaning forward, giving him the impression of being a hunchback, but it was just the unnatural form of his long goat legs that gave him his posture.

"Chief Inspector Miles, we were expecting your arrival."She answered back with a salute.

"Yes, yes, and you were that girl that just got her promotion, right? Eva something, walk with me, we have no time for pleasantries. " Eva found him to be even taller from up close and followed behind the chief inspector, his hooves making a racket as he walked down the hallway looking at the bloodied walls.

"The gang of the twins are accounted for. Some tried to run away yesterday night but we captured them. They declared to have been attacked by an unknown group of men and women in black. According to them, they were not Asian, so it is unlike they were allied with the Nishiyama. That said, none of them had any idea who these people were."Eva spoke behind him while checking her notes

"I'm not seeing simple guns being used here. These people were well-armed. They had to be a whole little army. It would be nonsense to think they were not a part of some organization. This is nonsense." Now then, what about the brothers? " He said as if annoyed he needed to clarify.

"One was decapitated on the second floor, the other one seems to have had his heart pierced on the rooftop. There are signs of a struggle in both locations. There is no doubt they both were attacked by demons."

"Oh, that's strange, an unknown group of armed soldiers with demons at the helm. Is there any chance Toussant Ocasio and his little mafia are involved, or even Louise and his dirty flies?" Miles sneered with disdain.

"I wouldn't know. I can't see how they would have anything to gain from this. There was a risk of upsetting the Nishiyama and neither of them would want that."

"Of course, you wouldn't know anything else." He looked back at Evan and laughed for a second as he marched on.

"There is something more. We found a group of gang members in the basement, and they were killed strangely in a more animalistic manner." The chief inspector clapped. ''Now that sounds like fun. What are you waiting fore deputy inspector? Eva, escort me there if you please. Too much time is being wasted here. Move it. "

She found his tone to be weirdly aggressive towards her. It was their first meeting, but he seemed already to dislike her. Eva was used to this. There was no shortage of rumors on the force that the great inspector Frankly must have died due to one of her mistakes. She walked forwards with a respectful nod and the man with the legs of a goat followed her, looking around him like a beast on the prowl. All of the members of the police kept their distance.

They arrived at the basement where a pile of corpses had been discarded. It truly was different from the sight above, here underneath the building the bodies had been mauled to such a level that it was clearly not the work of a human anymore, less of an assassination it was a scene of hatred.

''They had their necks broken or asphyxiated first. It almost looks like they were lynched by an entire mob, but there are no traces of there being any other people here.'' Eva continued and hhe chief inspector came close to the bodies, smelling them. His face showed a clear smile.

"There is but one scent here; a single person killed them all. How curious! I can see hand marks on lots of them, on their wrists and necks."

''But that's more than two hands.''

''Who says that people can't have more than two arms these days? I heard that there are rumors of a ghost that kills people in this town. I wonder if this is their deed. Maybe this whole thing was just a demon pretending to be a ghost story.''

"... I heard that a strange fog appeared in town on the night of the attack... but I don't think there are rumors of fog appearing with that ghost, but I have seen someone that can summon a fog like this before." Eva hesitated but decided to speak. The chief inspector stood up again, moving away from the corpses, and looked back at her. In that small room, he looked even taller with his inhuman legs.

"The person who killed Inspector Frankly could summon a fog just like that... They also claimed to be devil hunters; maybe they came for the brothers."

"hahaha, that again. Listen, those people were outside the city. There is no getting over our walls. If you have a flimsy idea because of some fog, plenty of devils can do that stuff, you can't expect me to take it seriously. I hope you are not saying that nonsense around now that you are a deputy inspector. I do hope so. " Chairman inspection Miles put his hands behind his back and walked towards her.

"It was just an assumption. I know there is no real evidence for it, and it could very well just be a ghost for what little we know."

''Right right, now then, why don't we talk for a moment since we are alone down here. Listen, I know the only reason you got this position is that the chief ordered it. Why? I couldn't possibly tell you you sure never achieved anything worthwhile and without a demon, someone in your life is just a liability more than anything.'' The chief inspector came quite close to her face while Eva remained completely unmovable, but her hands were shaking behind her back.

''All that really matters in this department is that the director has you under her grace. After all, she has everyone in her pockets. We all hate her, but we have to respect her anyway. I have no choice but to lick her boots if I want to keep my job. It is so annoying that she is giving such clear favorites when all you did was to get Franklin killed. Man, if I could get half of that pig's recommendation, I wouldn't be here getting my hooves dirty in this dump. He tapped the force with force and walked away from her.''

"I'm only trying to do my job here, sir."

"Your job, yes, sure, sure. I detest arrogant women who get out of line. You being here at all speaks of your arrogance, but that is fine, you are the new chief's pet, so just make sure to not get on my bad side. The best you can do is to be seen but not heard, let people who have earn their place do their job. Actually, if you can be seen but not heard, that'll be even better. I have no interest in taking care of a human being, so if you want to keep yourself alive, do like Mr. Franklin did and try to get off our way. Take this as friendly advice. "

"You hate the chief then." The man smiled, looking down at the pile of corpses.

"There has never been a more corrupt chief than that woman. She had everyone in her pocket. Even if everyone hates her, we all know that she could very well be the first chief to become a part of the devil corps, so we have no choice but to follow her coattails too. In this city, it all comes down to connections. I don't know why you are here, but it is only because the chief recommends you that I have no choice but to accept you as deputy. But... as long as I'm second after her, I won't be nice to you. You are not a real deputy; you don't deserve your position, but as long as you have it, I will have to let you be. "' The chief inspector walked towards her again.

''You finish cleaning here, send me a report, and don't screw anything up. I'll go take a look at the brothers for now.'' He gave her a slap on her shoulder, and she did her best to not recoil as he walked away, the sound of his hooves resounding for a long time as he walked down the hallway. Eva came out of the room and leaned against the door. There was no one around her anymore.

Eva lit a cigarette. It had been half a year since she started smoking. Ever since the day she went to that infernal labyrinth, it was one of the few things that kept her nerves in place.

''I guess Mr. Franklin really wasn't made to be a deputy. I feel he wouldn't have left the chief to speak out of turn like this... but I have to, I can't afford any enemies, and he is not wrong. I'm barely worth anything without a demon... but I'm not giving up, inspector. My family gave me too much to ever be able to pay them back. " Things had changed, even if it was only due to that woman's whims; she now wielded far more power than she had previously, reminding herself of the fact was the best she could do.

"I will pay you back as well, inspector. The man in the fog. I will make sure he receives justice in your name and I'll do anything, no matter how shameful, to do so." She whispered to herself as she let the ash from her cigarette fall down the hall.
