Chapter 25:

This is a God?

I am but a Cloud, Floating from Place to Place

I am but a… actually, maybe I shouldn’t be doing this.

Though I have to wonder, is this really the Adventurer God?

The swordswoman thrust her weapon towards me in a few moments, aiming for my exposed throat. Ignoring the obvious outlier, she was probably the fastest person I’d seen in my days of floating. Honestly, I was so distracted by it that I hadn’t thought to stop the attack. A trickle of blood dripped from the frozen blade a hairsbreadth away.

“What do you think you’re doing?” Brennan coldly intoned, his hand holding the blade as tightly as possible. Though injured, he didn’t give any sign or wince of pain, as expected of a prior high-ranking adventurer. However, even he couldn’t completely stop the blade. It quivered ever so slightly as the swordswoman tried to push further.

“Selene, stop!”

“You can’t go around killing people, Selene!”

“Please! Think about what you’re doing right now!”

The party member of the swordswoman, whose name was likely Selene, held her back a few beats after Brennan caught the sword. They seemed surprised, probably from her sudden outburst of murderous intent. Honestly, I had no idea what to do in this situation. But if there was one thing I knew, I wasn’t allowed to ignore the customer, even when she was trying to kill me.

“So… would you like a drink?” I hesitantly asked, picking up one of the mixers. A dumbfounded expression appeared on each person’s face. Apparently, that was the wrong question.

“A drink?” Selene monotoned, as if she couldn’t believe the words coming out of my mouth. Then, she started to laugh hysterically yet with a calm expression. It reminded me of a town festival where there was always that one person who wore flamboyant crowds, performing feats for the entertainment of others. Though, in contrast, she lacked any warmth in her smile.

“Is that a yes then?”

Selene calmed down, almost as if she was putting on an act. “You must be joking. Do you not understand what’s going on right now?”

“You’re trying to kill me, right? What’s so hard to understand about that?”

“Then why in the world would I want a drink, you bastard!” she yelled. My mana responded in tandem, flooding the building. Wait… my mana? Why was my mana flowing out of Selene’s body? Did she also draw from the environment? That would explain the tense looks instead of collapsed bodies. Huh, I understood why she would be considered the Adventurer God then.

Selene withdrew her sword faster than before, making it seem like it simply vanished to the average person’s eye. Then, she thrusted once again.

Clink!

The sword bounced off the inside of the mixer. Selene’s eyes widened as the unexpected rebound knocked her onto the floor with the rest of her party. She remained dazed on the floor as I spoke once again, “If you’re not going to order a drink, I’ll have to ask you to leave.”

The guildmaster was the first person to come to his senses. “Y-yes, right! Maybe we should continue this another time with cooler heads. We’ll make sure to investigate this matter thoroughly,” he said through a strained smile. I had no idea what he was talking about.

The other party members recovered soon after, standing up in a hurry before bowing their heads. “Thank you very much, and we’re sorry for our leader. We’ll come back later to continue.” They proceeded to drag the dazed Selene out of the guildhall while everyone else watched the struggle.

As soon as the doors closed behind them, a collective sigh of relief rang out. Muttered bits of conversation followed.

“Man, that was the Adventurer God?”

“She’s much more ruthless than I heard. Happy I didn’t try to get her attention.”

“Right?”

“Still, I didn’t expect her to be so hostile to Melora.”

“Do you think she mistook Melora for someone else?”

“Who knows.”

Well, at least it was over, but now there were people speculating about my nonexistent relationship with the Adventurer God. I let out an annoyed sigh.

“Sorry about that Melora. I heard the Adventurer God could be testy at times, but I didn’t think she would outright attack anyone,” the guildmaster apologized.

“It’s fine. I just would rather not deal with that again,” I bluntly said.

“O-of course. Feel free to take a few days… no a week off! If the Adventurer God comes and bothers you again, let me know and I’ll take care of it.” The man who stood there dumbly as I was about to be murdered called it a small bother? I wasn’t sure whether it was insulting or idiotic. It seemed like even the guildmaster knew it was an empty promise with how fast he retreated.

Well, whatever. I inspected the mixer to make sure there were no defects before rinsing it out with water.

“...what?” Brennan was still staring at me with wide eyes.

“How’d you do that?”

“Huh? Do what?”

“Block that sword with the mixer. It should’ve pierced through with all that mana running through it.”

“It isn’t anything special. I just used a bit of mana to redirect the incoming force.” All I did was increase the density of the mana in the mixer. Then, with some clever angling, the mana that was thrown in flew right back towards the sword, giving a bit of push back. Since Selene hadn’t expected such a thing, her poor footing left her unable to absorb the impact. There wasn’t much mana involved, so Brennan could do it quite easily. I didn’t understand why he was so surprised.

“...well, regardless, I think you should get out of town for a bit.”

“Hmm? Why?”

“The way the Adventurer God was looking at you. It seems like she’s out to murder you for some reason. And those eyes…”

“Really? I think I’ll be fine. But I’ll leave if it gets too annoying.”

“If you say so…” Brennan didn’t push any further. I wasn’t particularly worried either way since she wouldn’t be able to kill me even if she unleashed all her strength. It would probably blow over in a few days at most.

…right?
