Chapter 2:

The Way We Part

刻制殺人 (Koku-sei Satsujin)

I never really thought about how I'd act when the clock hit 0. I'm like a house spider to a grasshopper, I can catch something and try to start it, but will only come back to it when I need to- If that makes any sense. There isn’t much to do except think a lot of the time, but I still can’t get metaphors right. I've spent the past while simply sitting atop this tower. How long? Well it doesn’t really matter. It's honestly unbelievable that we've managed to survive up until this point on an island like this. That is to say, I've barely done anything. I would've thought that I would at least want to have fun in these last moments, but I don't really feel like it would be right. Other people are attempting to make some fun out of this ordeal. I hear some are having sex. I've never understood why that would be something you would want to do to enjoy yourself. My little sister has tried to get me to try it, and after giving it a shot, I've refused every sequential offer. It seems like the kind of activity that would imbue an addiction or regrets. But I won't stop them if that's how they want to go out. My hands slipped a little, almost falling out of the tower completely as my entire body rumbled. The bell behind me had just been struck. It was now the final day.

"Are you really going to sit there and mope all day?" Y made her way towards me from the stairs.

"Give me a break, the day just started." I stood up, being careful as to not fall out of the building.

"Come on then, let's go see everyone."

She had arranged for everyone to meet at the base of the general camp, where most people stay. Y was much better with people than I was, and considering our age gap, it was a bit embarrassing. When she was first born I wasn’t very close to her for the first thousand days or so, but I soon realised I had no real choice. Sometimes she appears with things I didn’t even know existed on this island, things like a sports ball or this weird pink rubber thing. She quickly became very popular among the island with these discoveries. The sports ball especially netted her some points from the males. I’m not sure where it is now though. It might have been taken into the bunker. It could’ve been washed away. Following Y down the stairs, we ran into another person, trying to ascend them instead. I didn't know their name, but they had pitch black eyes and hair. Perhaps that was G. Either way, we let them pass us awkwardly as we tried to push out bodies against the wall to make room. Even still, they had a hard time getting past us, leaving me with what felt like a broken toe or two. Well at least I know they were a girl now. Exiting the flimsy door we arrived at the campsite, where two others stood. One male and the other female. It seems even Y wasn't able to convince the fisherman to join us. If I had to guess, he would be fishing. Same goes for the bunker duo, they would likely be inside the bunker. We exchanged some small talk, mainly about how we felt, although it was fairly unanimous.

Empty.

We sat in silence for the next hour or two, at least it felt that long. Occasionally someone would cough, or look around, but by the looks of it, we had all accepted what was coming to us, and all we could do was wait. Breaking the silence we heard a scream, well, more of a shriek. This wasn't anything too out of the ordinary here, but it did manage to startle us out of our silent bout. Turning to face the tower we saw the girl we had passed on the stairs. She was in freefall. Falling from the highest point of the clock, where I once sat. But this time, instead of sitting and thinking about the life I once lived, it was about ending that life. A while after we heard the impact, the male from our group stood up and walked away, towards the pier where C was sitting, doing the same thing as always. Fishing. I can only imagine he wants to die doing the thing he loves. I find that admirable. In my near 6000 days alive, I never did manage to find something that I truly enjoyed, did I?
