Chapter 0:

Prologue

I'm NOT the Hero

‘It’s cold. I can’t feel anything anymore. My body, where did it go? Is this what it’s like to be dead?’ So much to understand that I can’t quite grasp. It’s cold, I can’t feel anything. I’m scared. What happened? Why did I die? When did I die? How? Who? I can’t take it. Someone please tell me why I can’t feel my body, my arms, my legs. It feels like my heart is racing but I can’t even feel that. Is it all in my head? Did I do something?

“Fear not child.” A woman’s voice spoke out in the black abyss. Slowly as I tried to get a better bearing of my surroundings, I slowly started to notice more color, little white, red, yellow, orange dots filled by vision. Beautiful red, green, and blue shapes appeared in what seemed so close yet I could tell they were far away. The sensation of weightlessness suddenly hit me. Was I floating? I look out in front of me and there sitting on a magnificent throne. A woman with white robes, seemingly barely covering any of her skin. Still lost in my panic slightly, I carefully move toward her.

“You seemed like you were going through a panic attack. Not to worry, it happens more often than you think, child.” She spoke. Her words echoed through the sounding space. Her tone commanded attention from those who were around her. I couldn’t comprehend what I was looking at. I had remained completely speechless for the entire time. The least I could’ve done was at least say ‘hello.

“Hel-” My voice went ignored as she spoke. “I will just get straight to the point here. Unfortunately you’ve perished, child.” My head tilted, trying to process what was going on. “You died.” She said more matter of fact than trying to calm me. My face dropped my mouth straight as my initial reaction was to say ‘You don’t say?’ But, I bite my tongue to avoid confrontation. Still, I can’t believe I’m dead.

“You’re going to be reincarnated, Child. One where you will be able to utilize magic.” She spoke. Her words continue to echo around the space around us. I started paying attention a little more.

“So you’re telling me that I’m going to be a hero?” I asked with a glimmer of hope. Which is instantly shot down when she says “Absolutely not.” Stunned, I couldn’t even find words to speak anymore

“You are not going to be the hero in this world. It does not need a hero. This is a second chance for you to live your life, Child.” Her calling me child is really getting on my nerves. I get I’m a human and she’s a god. But, still. It doesn’t sit right with me. Finally I speak up. “So all I’m gonna be able to do is live a normal life and nothing cool? No adventuring, No danger?” My word protesting the life she seemed to have described to me.

“If it is your wish to adventure then you may do so. However the world, in which you will live in, doesn’t give skills for free. You must earn them by fighting. Strength through experience. Not by gift, Child.” Her words struck me deep within my soul. Coming to terms with the reality I must face as much as I wish it wouldn’t have been true.

“Alright then” I said more to myself, preparing for the life ahead of me. “One last thing, Child” her words interrupt my thoughts. “When I teleport you it’ll be completely random. It’s out of my control on where you’ll end up. So you must prepare yourself to fight as soon as you get there if it becomes necessary, Child." The mere mention of the idea that I’ll probably have to face monsters before I even get any skills sends shivers down my spine.

“What happens if I die?” I ask out of fear. “You will no longer be able to come back, Child.” Her words again cut deep within my soul however with a haunting doom lingering with them. Before I had a chance to say anything else a white mist began to glow around me. The beautiful background of space is drowned out by the bright light. As things became brighter I could hear the God speak. “May your life be full of happiness and adventure, Child. I pray we cross paths after you live a long life.” Her words echo and grow faint as the light becomes blinding. I close my eyes as it becomes unbearable.

The next thing I feel is a thud. The ground is cold and wet. Feels like rock. Thunderous sounds echoed around me.I slowly opened my eyes to see nothing but darkness. Feeling around I search for anything that could help me get a bearing of my surroundings. Suddenly a low growl comes from behind me. All I could see was a glowing light behind me and the feeling of something massive. As I turned around I saw two glowing eyes hovering several feet over me. I could only mutter a couple of words before I had to run. “Son of a-”
