Chapter 21:

I Am Your Mother!

The In-Between

"You're still alive, Hayden!" When Emily saw something strange, she screamed and was ready to fly to him, to hold him in her arms and never let go. He was aviated. His brown hair, which had identified him as human, had turned ebony, and his stunning hazel eyes, which she had always admired and considered to be one of his better attributes, had turned bloody red. Two enormous ones were seen behind his back.

"No," she muttered in desperation. No! It couldn't be. She was saving him when she bit him, but now she had to face reality. She merely turned him into a vile creature; she didn't save him. Although she ought to have let Hayden die, she was unable to let him go. She had to modify him in order for him to stay, which was selfish of her, but she now realizes that was wrong. For example, she came to the realization that Hayden was attempting to influence her to change him rather than actually killing himself.

She clenched her hands and glared at him, accusing him of deceiving her. She appeared to get even more strength from her rage.

"I didn't want to Hayden objected, "I wanted to keep you safe." "Emily, you made the decision. You had the option to let me die, but instead you decided to alter me. I am appreciative of that.

Correct. It was she who made the decision to transform him. Hayden wasn't at fault for whatever he did. He was unaware—and perhaps still is—that he would live the rest of his life regretting this.

She said nothing.

He beckoned to the clouds surrounding them and opened his arms wide, asking, "Can you tell me what this is about?"

She might as well tell him about her idea. He wasn't going to persuade her to do otherwise.

"The Human Realm will be destroyed by me! I can demolish a city with every hit of my power storm, but I am not strong enough to wipe out the entire planet at once. She raised her voice above the noise of the storm and declared, "Once I achieve my goal, I will take over the Obsidian Angel Dominion, kingdom by kingdom."

"Please don't do this, Emily! You're going to ruin millions of lives! Hayden begged pityingly.

"I don't give a damn," she said glumly. "I murdered my parents." What makes this any different?

"You killed your parents?" Hayden mouthed in horror as his eyes widened.

"You didn't think I was capable of doing that, did you?" She made a mocking challenge.

"Don't worry about that! This isn't you, Emily! He objected.

She chuckled. "How do you determine what I am or am not?" In any case, you don't give a damn about me!

"What are you saying?" Hayden asked, staring at her. I love you, of course!

"So, Hayden, why did you jump? Why would you harm me like that? You almost died yourself after tricking me into changing you! With tears in her eyes, she protested, "How could you say you love me when you nearly distanced yourself from me forever?" The powerful wind took care of wiping them away, so she didn't have to.

"I was trying to protect you," Hayden whispered, his cheeks hurting. Believe me, please! I reasoned that they would stop pursuing us if I transformed into an Obsidian Angel.

She gave a headshake. "Hayden, I can't. No one would act in such a foolish manner.

His remark, "Then obviously you need to reconsider where I am on the idiot scale," was not lighthearted. She wouldn't laugh.

"Please, let's talk about this somewhere more private and calm," Hayden said, extending his elbow in her direction. Emily, give me a chance!

"I had your opportunity! She turned aside and murmured sourly, "It's too late now."

“Emily!” called a second voice. Who else? Suddenly, through the clouds, Tara landed beside Hayden.

"Stop this, Emily!" Like Emily, Tara gave an order as her clothes and hair were blowing wildly.

"I'm your Queen," Emily shot back. "You don't dictate to me!"

"Yes, since I am your mother, I can give you orders!" Tara responded with a yell. Emily was completely taken aback by this, which stopped her power increase. The wind stopped, but the clouds continued to hide them from view.

"What?" In the utter hush, Emily inquired.

"Emily, I am your mother," I said.

Unsure of what to say, Emily opened her mouth and then shut it. At last, she thought of something.

She crossed her arms in a defiant reply, "Prove it."

Gregory was the name of your father. He was a person I met while teaching dance at a YMCA. I spent some time in the Human Realm because I wanted to draw a comparison between training Obsidian Angels and teaching people.

Your father was sweating profusely when he emerged from the gymnasium, and I had just met him. He and a couple of his male mates were playing basketball. I would spend weeks afterward watching him play basketball. He approached me at the bleachers one day and made a romantic proposal. After a while of dating, I revealed who I was to him on one of our dates. He took my words at face value. Then he declared his intention to wed me. Since I knew I couldn't wed a mortal, I declined. We continued to visit one another in spite of this, and we even shared a bed one night. It never occurred to me that I could conceive from a person! The Queen had him decapitated after learning about it. Despite my anger and sadness, I was unable to exact revenge on him because I wanted to protect you. The Queen stole you from me after you were born and forced me to swear that I would never reveal who I really am to you. As she concluded this lengthy speech, Tara breathed, "I feel free to tell you this now that Queen Celeste is gone."

Stunned by this realization, Emily stood there blinking. God, oh God. Her mother was Tara.

"So I didn't murder my mother?" Weakly, Emily asked.

"No," said Tara, grinning and shaking her head. I remain here.

Emily noted, "But I still killed my dad."

Tara winced. "Yeah, but it wasn't your fault, my dear."

Unbelieving, Emily nodded. Slowly, she turned and left.

"I indirectly killed my dad." I nearly ruined the entire Human Realm. The Queen was defeated by me. In a state of intense depression, she thought to herself, "And I transformed Hayden into an Obsidian Angel."

"Emily?" With trepidation, Hayden said and moved forward. "What are you contemplating?"

She came to a stop in front of the tall building's edge, but she couldn't see anything because the clouds obscured her view. She was aware of what she had to accomplish.

"I apologize," she murmured glumly. "However, I simply cannot accept myself."

She tilted forward, tucked her wings back, and dropped, headfirst.

"NO!" She disregarded the shouts from Hayden and Tara. Like a comet, she fell headfirst into the air, readying herself for the impact of the pavement.

Abruptly, she felt solid arms encircle her, and the material her hand clenched around felt like a sweatshirt.

When she yelled, "Hayden, get off!" she fought, but he wouldn't let go. Hayden tried to turn on his jetpack by clicking the ignition, but it failed. He made another attempt, but to no avail. The jetpack was damaged. At maximum speed, they plummeted through the sky, trailed by a dazzling white spotlight. As people watched them fall in death, there were screams and shouting. Emily discovered that Hayden's jetpack contained extremely flammable jet fuel.

Both of them would be killed if the jetpack exploded when they hit the ground and slammed into the pavement. Because Hayden was pressing her wings against him, she was unable to flap. She had no choice except to fall and hope Hayden would let her go. No luck. Hayden's wings were flapping hard and quickly, but they were getting faster, and the ground was rising very quickly. Something unusual happened just when she was positive they were going to end up like two insects smashed against the world's windshield. Hayden threw them back into the air after flipping them so they were feet first rather than headfirst and slamming his feet into the concrete. They took off after he flapped. The crowd below them, which was packed with police cars, civilians, and even a CIA truck, gasped. Hayden didn't waste any time, and they vanished via a portal on the side of the building as the spotlight came back on them.

She said, "I'm sorry," as they entered the vortex to the Obsidian Angel Dominion.

"Don't be alarmed," he said calmly. "Now everything is fine."
