Chapter 20:

Blood Factory

The In-Between

Hayden and Xavier were taken to the Obsidian Palace through the portal. The space was large, with red flags dangling from the ceiling and a red carpeted floor. Chandeliers positioned every few feet along the corridor provided the illumination. With Hayden straining to catch up, Xavier wasted no time in running down the hallway. Even though he is now an Obsidian Angel, he was just created and lacked strength, speed, and power. Xavier sped on till they reached a vast room with a throne pile of bones at the end, surrounded by Obsidian Angel guards. Hayden's attention was not focused on that. The body was burnt and broken, and there was a huge hole in the center of the room. Hayden wanted to vomit at the sight of the corpse's horrific state, but then a huge terror showed itself. What if Emily was that body?

"What happened here?" demanded Xavier as he stalked toward the closest guard.

Emily threw Queen Cynthia into a death-defying duel. The guard answered, "Emily just happened to win."

Hayden exhaled a sigh of comfort. Thus, Emily wasn't the one who passed away. She killed someone, but at least it was that miserable Queen. Thanks to the Obsidian Angel Human Hybrid, who believed her to be so malevolent, there was now one fewer monster in the world.

"Now, where is Queen Emily?" Xavier's question was more pressing.

"She publicly announced to the Dominion that she was Queen. The Human Realm was the next place she visited. The guard said angrily, "She says she's going to destroy one city at a time until the entire mortal world is destroyed." It seems that he disagreed with the decisions made by the new Queen.

"What? Will she devastate the Human Realm? Hayden cried out.

"That isn't possible," Hayden contended. "I know no Emily who would ever do that."

The guard gave a shrug. "That's her statement."

Xavier gave a nod. "I'm grateful."

Then he said, "Come on," turning to face Hayden.

"Hey! The Queen told us not to get involved! Another security on the scene objected.

Xavier shot back, "Well, she didn't order me." He then took hold of Hayden's arm, and the two of them dashed down the corridor.

They yelled, "Hey!" and the other guards trailed behind, nearly impotent to Queen Emily's orders. At that point, Hayden began to question whether they would be forced to stop them if the Queen gave them the order.

With the soldiers immediately behind them, Xavier and Hayden kept running down the hallways. They jumped into the whirlpool after Xavier opened a gateway just as Hayden's lungs felt like they were going to explode. The guards were ready to enter with them when Xavier shut the gateway behind him. Unable to reach the opening quickly enough, they instead crashed into the wall.

They passed close to the city's highest skyscraper when they came out on the other side of the portal. The building's top was encircled by swirling black clouds, their starkness tinged with red.

"Oh no," Xavier muttered horrifiedly. Trent and Loren arrived just as Hayden was ready to inquire what the devil was happening.

"Hayden, you have to hurry!" Loren cried out, panting.

"What is it?" With trepidation, Hayden asked.

"It's Emily!" exclaimed Trent. "She's up there!" He gestured at the building's summit.

"How can I ascend there?" All business, Hayden asked Xavier.

"Are you able to fly yet?" With a wince, Xavier inquired.

"No. I mean, I can fly, but Embarrassed to be an Obsidian Angel but not knowing how to fly, Hayden trailed off.

Xavier laughed. "I feared you would utter those words. Wait a moment.

Then, after disappearing for a few minutes within a portal, Xavier came back. Trent and Loren had been filling Hayden in on the things he had been missing in the interim. In essence, his human buddies went to Trent's house to watch the news for any indication of Emily's whereabouts after Hayden and Xavier had left. Emily appeared on the screen amidst the whirling clouds when they turned it on. They hurried to the building to reach Emily as soon as they realized that a terrible catastrophe would occur. On the way, they occurred to pass Xavier and Hayden. Xavier had a little jet pack in his palm when he returned.

"This is it. Fly up to Emily with this. You must persuade her to abandon this absurd scheme as you are the only one who can reason with her," Xavier said.

Accepting the challenge, Hayden nodded. Then he placed the tiny device between his wings, the jet pack, on his back.

Xavier went on to say, "You really owe me one." Then he pivoted to reveal his charred wings. Aww. How could that have happened to him?

After observing Hayden's expression, Xavier clarified, "A dragon was watching over the inventions vault." With a wince, Hayden tried not to imagine what may have happened.

With a small smile, Hayden bid them farewell by saying, "Anyway, wish me luck."

They all said, "Good luck," and Hayden turned on the machine by pressing the ignition button in his hand.

Having no idea what he was up against, Hayden shot skyward.

Emily's strength built up to the point where the wind swept across her face as she caused the clouds to swirl around her. Standing atop the city's tallest structure, she was getting ready to demolish the place where she had lived in the Human Realm. It would be almost impossible for the human cops to see through the dense, enormous, black clouds from far below. They thought it was a bizarre, chaotic storm cloud that was hovering over the structure. What idiots! It was understandable that these people were so naive that they were unaware that Obsidian Angels existed! She couldn't help but feel happy as the power in the sky and within her increased. This planet they utilized as a blood factory was foolish and arrogant, and she was finally going to get rid of it. She would have her wish to wipe off humanity! Well, there was another story. She went on to become the monarch of the entire Obsidian Angel Dominion.

“Emily!” someone yelled. Then a well-known person rode a jetpack through the clouds. As though he was afraid of her, he landed on the opposite side of the structure. Whether he was awake or asleep, unconscious or amnesic, or even dead, she would still be able to identify him. She would risk everything for this individual, and he would risk everything for her. Someone who was aware of every detail about her that she was unable to disclose. He might have more information about her than she did. Hayden.
