Chapter 3:
The Cat, Mia and the stars
The gentle breeze carries a familiar scent: the sweet aroma of Grandma’s apple pie.
I get up, sniffing the air, and follow the trail of that wonderful smell all the way to Grandma’s garden. She is a kind old lady, and Mia loves her dearly. Every now and them, when I go over to play with Mia, Grandma shows up with her apple pie and a few sandwiches. Mia absolutely love that pie, she jumps with joy every single time. I ,on the other hand, prefer the sandwiches , especially the ones with tuna or salmon.
I leap onto the windowsill, where the apple pie is cooling, and let out a “meow”, hoping Grandma’s attention.
“ Oh, little one” she says with her voice sounding weak, almost muffled.
“ You smelled the pie, didn’t you? How about keeping me company while I take it to Mia? In exchange , I’ll give you some salmon sandwiches” she adds with a gentle smile. I rub my head against her hand and meow happily accepting her offer.
We walk side by side, crossing several blocks. Even though it’s spring and the afternoon sun is shining warmly, Grandma is wearing thick clothes and has a scarf wrapped around her neck; the one with little stars that Mia gave her.
A while back, Mia became fascinated with knitting and asked Grandma to teach her. I’ll never forget that time. It was right before Christmas and Mia insisted I wear a red wool sweater, she had made just for me, Just thinking about it, brings back the awful itchiness I felt that day. What a nightmare!
Grandma keeps adjusting her scarf, holding onto tightly, as if she’s afraid of losing it.
She must really treasure it.
As we reach Mia’s front gate, I notice a lot of people gathered in the garden.
“It must be a party!” I meow excitedly.
I try to squeeze through the bars of the gate, but I get stuck.” They must have changed it” I grumble, eager to get inside.
“Let’s go in together, little one” Grandma picks me up, and I notice her hands trembling slightly. I can sense a hint of sadness in her, so I nuzzle my face against hers to comfort her. And with that, we step into the garden.
