Chapter 4:

She Bites Back

The Cryptid Killer

Charlotte was a loner. She always had been for many reasons, but mostly because if she became close to people, her secrets could be exposed. You see, Charlie was immortal and she had been alive for over 200 years and had not aged a day. Getting close to someone who wasn't like her would be impossible for a long stretch of time due to her unchanging appearance. She had mid length black hair and a short stature, plus she was just tiny and slender overall. That didn't matter much since she had unworldly strength anyways. She needed it back when she first became a vampire, but not so much anymore. No, a bag of blood could be purchased almost everywhere nowadays. They even had a service which was essentially a delivery service for blood. Hunting was pretty much a thing of the past because the likelihood of getting caught was also high with the advancement of recording devices. Everyone who had a cell phone Quite literally had a high definition camera at this point. Even homeless people had one meaning like everyone did.

Charlotte usually didn't frequent the same place for longer than five years to avoid questioning about her continued youthful appearance. She had however spent quite a bit of time all across the state of Minnesota and found herself becoming a regular customer at a diner in the cities. She figured if it was just for a decade she would probably be ok in such a booming metropolis.

Being a vampire wasn't quite what everyone thought it was either. She did burn fairly easily in the sun, but she did not catch fire. She could in fact take pictures and see herself in the mirror. Silver made her get a rash, and she often wore a crucifix as a fashion statement without any harm. Yes, she had to drink blood, but she was ok drinking most things. It just so happened that her favorite drink was coffee. The flavor wasn't particularly good, but something about the bitterness made her feel nostalgic.

Coffee was the whole reason that she started going to this diner in the first place. Given her dark and gloomy aura, Charlie hardly had anyone approach her. It genuinely surprised her when a tall, dark haired, and creepy looking guy approached her with an unnaturally wide smile. The man had a deep and deceptively friendly voice.

“I noticed you have been coming around here a lot lately. The name is Dan. Nice to meet ya!”

Charlotte just stared at his outstretched hand, unmoving. After an awkwardly long pause, Charlotte shook his hand.

“You can call me Charlie,” she whispered.

When she looked up at Dan, and their eyes met, Charlie knew immediately that she was looking into the eyes of another killer. If she hadn't had so much experience with dealing with these types of people she would have fled in a panic. Instead, Charlie flashed back her eyes which she figured Dan would recognize as deadly and back off. To her surprise, Dan's eyes sparkled with interest.

From that point on Dan came to visit her everyday that she went to the cafe. Annoyed by his presence, Charlie tried her best not to engage in conversation with Dan. That didn't deter him. She decided that she was going to stop coming to the diner because the guy was starting to really creep her out.

That last day she planned to leave and not return but there was a funny taste in her mouth. Charlie tried to leave the diner, but found it difficult to stand. Dan came behind her and pretended to help her to his car, but instead injected her with something right in the jugular. Everything went black.

When she woke up, Charlie's hands and feet were bound, and she had a piece of fabric stuffed into her mouth. Dan was sitting across the room from her. It was dark, but she could see Dan's predatory eyes glowing at her, like a wolf, stalking prey. Instead of being scared, she was angry. Angry that this mortal man had the audacity to kidnap her. Angry that he seemed to be planning to murder her and do god knew what with her body. Lastly, she was angry that despite her being a killer of men with obvious murderous intent behind her eyes that this man had selected her as a target.

The only thing that Charlie could do now was to escape and make sure this guy was brought to justice. If he wasn't it would be her own personal mission to kill the bastard. He started talking to her as she was fuming with rage.

“So, I guess you can finally see me for who I am. I'm sorry that it had to be you. I really think you are a very interesting person.” Dan flasheed his silver fanged smile.

“I already knew. We usually do. Afterall, it takes a killer to know one when we see them. You picked the wrong person to target.”

“No, I find you fascinating. A little thing like you thinking you can threaten me. Let's see how you do. I am twice your size. I am strong and you are tied up. Game on.”

In a single flex of her muscles, the binding that kept her captive snapped. Dan jumped on top of her and pinned her down, biting into the flesh of her upper back. Charlie kicked Dan in the groin and somehow managed to stand up. He tried to slam her head into one of the walls, but she was able to resist him. In a last ditch effort, Dan pulled out a syringe full of something and tried to stab her with it, but she was able to stab him with it instead. Once he was out cold, Charlie ran barefoot to the nearest cabin and called for help. While Dan was being arrested, she felt the change beginning to happen.

This had happened to her once before nearly a century ago. She had been bitten by an over zealous werewolf. The only cure against this curse was to kill the one who bit you before your first full moon had passed,so in short, Dan was going to have to die tonight. Charlie just had to make sure that she kept her mind clear. After receiving treatment, Charlie started to lose her mind to the desires of the beast within. She found herself running outside, following the scent of her maker.

Within the hour Charlie found herself standing outside the rural sheriff's office. The scent of that creep was all over this place. He had to be inside. It was going to be tricky to get him out with all those cops around. Lucky for her, Charlie was extremely clever and Dan was eager to meet her.

Meanwhile, Dan was aggressively yanking on his cuffs once he noticed that the survivor was outside. He needed to meet her so he had no choice but to break out of there. The easiest way to do this was going to be to kill his captors. Faster than anyone expected, Dan broke out of his cuff and ripped out agent Thompson's throat. Before agent Donovan could grab her gun he sent her flying into a wall. Then like magic he broke the glass of the small basement window and fled into the forest amidst a sea of bullets from deputies outside of the station.

Agent Donovan composed herself after seeing her partner murdered and began to chase after the escaped suspect.

Charlie was waiting for Dan in a clearing a few miles past the forest. When he finally arrived, the two squared off. Both baring their teeth, and Dan letting out a psychopathic laugh the two ran towards each other. There was no talking at this point. They were both behaving as complete animals, trying to rip each other's throats out. When agent Donovan finally reached the pair, they were rolling around and fighting like a couple of feral cats. Agent Donovan drew her weapon.

“Both of you stop and put your hands where I can see them! Now or I'll shoot!”

Rather than stop as commanded, something was flung in the direction of the agent. It fell to the floor right at her feet. When agent Donovan looked down, she was startled to say the least. Dan's entire left arm was lying at her feet. Before she could start shooting, his head landed right next to his severed arm.

“Omg. Wtf is happening?!”

The small woman at the other end of the field started to approach agent Donovan. She was wearing only a bra and underwear which were now soaked in blood. There was a very animal- like way that she moved, but she appeared human otherwise.

In a state of shock agent Donovan found herself unable to draw her weapon. The survivor took her gun and tossed it across the field. Agent Donovan looked up at Charlotte in fear.

“Just what are you?”

Charlie smiled with bloodied teeth. “I'm one of the creatures that goes bump in the night. That idiot picked the wrong person to abduct. Now he is dead. I think it would be easier for you if you just forgot about this whole mess. Have a good life agent Donovan,” and without any hesitation and at inhuman speeds, Charlie ran into the woods and out of sight.

That was the first experience that agent had with the supernatural, but it would not be her last. Once you encountered these things they had a tendency to reveal themselves again. This was the start of agent Donovan's paranormal nightmare.
