Chapter 12:
My New Boss is the Grim Reaper?!
Bedroom, Akane’s Apartment, Night
It is dark. Two silhouettes are engaging in oral sex on the bed; one with her legs spread open and another with his head between them. There are moans of pleasure and the bed gently shakes.
Akane blushes heavily. She is naked on the bedsheets.
Death has his hands on her thighs, almost as if keeping them spread as he continues to please her orally. He sucks on her tenderly and gently, using his tongue to caress her clitoris.
Death breaks away from her. He cooly dries his lips with the back of his hand.
Death: “You’re drenched down there.”
Akane breathes heavily.
Akane: “Don’t tease me like that, idiot. Hurry up.
Death smiles and pushes his manhood inside of her. He presses on her stomach as he thrusts it in. She moans loudly in reply.
Death slowly leans down closer to her as he continues to thrust. He kisses her tenderly while fondling her breast with another.
He continues pleasuring her, and slowly, he puts his other hand on top of hers. Their fingers intertwine.
Akane moans. She whispers.
Akane: “Death…”
Death is also flushed and breathing heavily. He leans back.
Death: “What is it?”
Akane leans up to hug Death tightly. She presses her cheek against his.
Akane: “I’m so happy.”
Death closes his eyes. The two of them finish at the same time as both their bodies rock with pleasure.
Akane leans back in the bed, trying to catch her breath. She has a gentle smile from the pleasurable experience. Then, she feels something wet on her cheek.
Akane looks up. Death has tears flowing down his cheek.
Akane: “Death…”
Death rubs at his eyes.
Death: “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”
Akane looks at him sadly. She sits up and hugs him tightly, their naked bodies pressing against each other.
Title card: My New Boss is the Grim Reaper?! Episode 12.
Bedroom, Akane’s Apartment, Night
Akane and Death are lying on the bed. They are both looking up at the ceiling whilst under the blankets. They share a quiet moment.
Akane has an introspective expression.
Akane: “What’s going to happen to them?”
Death glances over at her, but she keeps her gaze at the ceiling.
Death: “What?”
Akane: “Miss Sato and the others. If they can’t find peace, what will happen to them? I promised them I would help them, but in the end, I couldn’t do anything for them. At the end of the day, I wasn’t enough. At the end of the day, humanity lost. Evil prevails.”
Death keeps looking at her sadly.
Death: “Akane…”
Death gets up from the bed. He starts to put on his dress pants.
Death: “Get dressed.”
Akane sits up to look at him.
Akane: “What do you mean?”
Death glances back at her as he puts on his belt.
Death: “I’m going to show you something.”
Police Station, Noon
Ryō Furuichi sits at his desk inside the police station. The station is relatively quiet at the moment, with many of the other desks being empty. Ryō sits alone, sipping at his coffee. He smiles evilly and cruelly to himself.
Suddenly, several police officers walk into the station. They are being led by a man in a suit at the front. They walk towards Ryō.
Ryō puts down his coffee.
Ryō: “Is everything okay?”
Two of the police officers go behind Ryō and force him into handcuffs.
Ryō: “Hey! What’s going on?!”
The man in the suit holds up a piece of paper.
Man in Suit: “Detective Ryō Furuichi, you are hereby arrested for the murder of twenty-six individuals and suspicion of the murder of seven more.”
Ryō fights against the two officers, but they smash him down against his own desk.
Ryō: “That’s insane! What proof do you have?! Tell me, what proof do you have?!”
Ryō is being pushed and dragged away from his desk. He continues screaming as he is led away.
Ryō: “You have no proof! I’m innocent! Damn it, let me go!”
As he is being led away, Death and Akane stand near the back of the station, watching him.
Akane is shocked.
Akane: “But…but I don’t understand! How did they manage to catch him?!”
Death smiles at Akane. He gestures at her to follow him as he starts to walk away. Akanes stumbles after him.
Confession Room, Police Station, Late Night
Two detectives sit across the table from a young girl. It is the homeless girl who was selling origami flowers. She has a blanket draped over her shoulders and a cup of hot chocolate between her hands.
Homeless Girl: “The nice lady bought a flower from me. I didn’t realise until after she left, but she actually gave me too much and I had forgotten to give her change.”
City Streets, Late Night
A flashback of the homeless girl sitting on the sideback. She collects a handful of coins in her hand and then runs off, chasing after Akane and Ryō. She leaves her spot on the sidewalk behind, with her bundles of origami flowers unattended.
Homeless Girl (Narration): “I chased after the lady to try and give her the change. It took a while but I finally managed to find them.
The homeless girl stands behind a building and peaks from around the corner. Her eyes go wide.
She sees Ryō Furuichi standing over Akane’s body whilst holding the wrench.
Homeless Girl (Narration): “I saw everything.”
A close-up of Ryō’s face. He is smiling evily as he looks down over Akane.
Homeless Girl: “I saw his face clearly.”
Confession Room, Police Station, Late Night
There is a picture of Ryō Furuichi on the table. The homeless girl looks at the two detectives sitting across from her. She has a fiercely determined expression.
Homeless Girl: “This is the man that killed that lady. I’m certain of it.”
Akane and Death are standing in the corner of the confession room, watching everything happen. Akane clasps her hands over her mouth. Tears begin to gather at the edges of her eyes.
Death looks to her, smiling.
Death: “See, Akane? It was you who put him away. It was always you.”
Akane falls to the floor, continuing to cry.
Death: “It was your kindness, your love, that made it happen.”
Death squats down beside Akane. He puts a reassuring arm around her.
Death: “Nothing you did was useless.”
Akane cries out loudly with joy.
Akane: “I’m so glad…I’m so glad…”
The two share a quiet moment, huddled against each other as Akane cries her heart out.
Elevator, Death Incorporated Building, Afternoon
Death stands in the elevator alone. He has a contemplative and slightly sad expression. Akane is reassured, but he is still saddened that she is dead and cannot talk and interact with her loved ones.
Death sighs. There is nothing he can do.
The elevator doors open and Death walks through the hallway to his office. His eyes widen with surprise.
In front of his office door, there is a crowd of spirits gathered. They notice his arrival and turn to face him. They each have fearful and nervous expressions, and whisper amongst themselves.
Death approaches them, and waits for someone to speak.
One person steps forth from the crowd. It is Miss Sato.
Miss Sato: “Uh, um…Death-sama…”
She powers through her fear and puts on a determined look. She steps towards Death.
Miss Sato: “Please save Hayakawa-san! She was only trying to help us. It’s not fair that she would lose her own life for us!”
The rest of the crowd of spirits all chatter their agreement.
Spirit 1: “That’s right!”
Spirit 2: “It wasn’t her fault!”
Spirit 3: “She doesn’t deserve this!”
Miss Sato continues.
Miss Sato: “I was so scared and lonely after I died. Hayakawa-san was the only one to reach out to me and show me kindness!”
The middle-aged man that Akane spoke to in episode 4 steps forth, too.
Middle-aged Man: “That’s right! She was the only person who would listen to my story!”
The high school girl that Akane spoke to in episode 4 steps forth after.
High School Girl: “It made me feel so much better. It made me feel like I wasn’t so alone anymore.”
Death looks around at all the determined faces in the crowd. He frowns.
Death: “I’m sorry, but I can’t bring her back even if I wanted to. It is impossible to create life energy.”
The spirits all look saddened and disappointed by this. Then, Miss Sato becomes determined again.
Miss Sato: “Then take mine!”
Death is shocked and confused.
Death: “What?”
Miss Sato: “I know that I’m dead, but surely I must have just a slither of life energy within me, right? Or else how can I still be thinking and talking? So please take mine and give it to Akane.”
The other spirits all join in. They are loud and passionate about this.
Spirit 4: “Take mine as well!”
Spirit 5: “Mine too!”
Spirit 6: “Hayakawa-san has done so much for us! This is the least we can do!”
Death looks around at all the spirits who Akane has helped. He is surprised. There are so many of them.
Receptionist (Off-panel): “Take some of mine too.”
Death turns around. It is the receptionist. She fixes her glasses and even manages to give a rare smile.
Receptionist: “It’s harder to bully her if she’s not alive.”
Death smiles to himself. He closes his eyes.
Death (Narration): “Akane…look at all the lives you have touched. Look at all the people who you have saved.”
Death opens his eyes again.
Death: “Thank you, everyone, but even with all of you combined, there’s just not enough life energy to let Akane survive.”
He looks around at everyone.
Death: “And more importantly, she wouldn’t want all of you to sacrifice yourselves for her sake.”
Everyone looks saddened and disappointed.
Death: “But don’t worry. You’ve each inspired me to do something reckless.”
With that, Death snaps his fingers and vanishes.
Holding Cell, Police Station, Late Night
Ryō Furuichi sits alone in a holding cell, awaiting his trial in the near future. He has been stripped down to a loose dress shirt and dress pants. He sits against the wall with a frustrated expression.
Death watches Ryō from the corner of the cell, standing against the bars. He clicks his fingers.
Suddenly, Ryō sees Death. Ryō is surprised, and stands up quickly.
Ryō: “Who are you?”
Death looks at Ryō. Death’s expression hides a silent fury behind his facade of calm. He is half-covered in darkness.
Death: “You’re so luck, you know. You’re going to live a long life. I won’t get my hands on you for another fifty years.”
Ryō is getting more annoyed now.
Ryō: “I said, who the hell are you?!”
Death retains his calm expression, although it is clear his bloodlust is building.
Death: “As long as your heart beats, I technically cannot do anything to you. However, this is a very very special circumstance because of two reasons.”
Death walks towards Ryō, who is becoming more and more worried.
Death: “Firstly, my interference here will do almost nothing to change the course of your destiny. You will continue to rot in this cell, unable to affect anything outside.”
As Death gets close to Ryō, he runs past him and grabs onto the bars of the cell. He pushes against them as he shouts frantically.
Ryō: “Guards! Guards!”
Death turns around. His eyes glow red in the darkness of the cell.
Death: “Secondly, you hurt the one person I truly love, and despite her pleas that I spare you, that is something I cannot forgive.”
Death begins to transform. Ryō’s eyes widen with fear.
Death transforms into his final beast form with a cloud of red. He seems to merge with the shadow with wisps of smoke. His monstrous body should be too large for the cell, and yet the rules of reality don’t seem to be functioning anymore.
Death has never looked more terrifying. His form is even more grotesque and horrifying than it was in episode 1. Where it had looked somewhat like an animal then, it now looks deformed and contorted. Its bony protrusions threaten to pierce skin.
There is an invisible pressure in the cell. Ryō leans back tight against the bars. His fear is clear across his face. He is worried for his life.
Death opens his skull jaw. Ryō’s mouth widens as if to cry out.
Death: “Look carefully, Ryō Furuichi. This is but a sliver of the suffering you will receive in fifty years.”
Death plunges a clawed hand into Ryō’s chest. Ryō screams.
Ambulance, City, Late Night
Continuing from episode 11. The first paramedic continues to use the defibrillator on Akane, but it’s still no use. The heart monitor is still beeping. Akane is still flatlining.
The second paramedic has already given up. He watches the first paramedic continuing to work on Akane without giving up. He has a somber and saddened expression.
Paramedic 2: “Stop. It’s over. She’s gone.”
The first paramedic refuses to stop. She keeps using the defibrillator.
Paramedic 1: “No! I’m not letting her die!”
The second paramedic rubs at his face. He looks incredibly tired.
Paramedic 2: “It’s been over ten minutes. It’s impossible now.”
The first paramedic continues. She doesn’t give up.
At the back of the ambulance, Death watches the paramedics in his human form. He has a sombre expression.
Death: “This might be the first time I have come to give life instead of taking it away.”
Death walks around to the other side of the stretcher while the first paramedic continues trying to revive Akane. Death raises one hand. He is holding what appears to be a glowing orb of light.
Death pushes the orb slowly into Akane’s chest. Then, he leans down and kisses Akane’s cheek. Death then suddenly disappears.
Beep! The heart monitor shows a bump. Akane’s heart is coming back.
The second paramedic is shocked.
Paramedic 2: “It can’t be!”
The heartbeat is going stronger now. Akane is revived.
The first paramedic steps back and drops to the floor, completely exhausted. She is breathing heavily.
Paramedic 1: “Yes…oh, thank god.”
The first paramedic has the brightest smile on her face despite her exhaustion.
Death’s Office, Death Incorporated Building, Morning
Death sips a mug of coffee at his desk as he reads a document. There is a knock at the door. He looks over at the door and smiles.
Death: “You sure took your time.”
Akane walks in, healthy and alive. She has recovered from the attempt on her life. She smiles, holding a stack of documents.
Akane: “These are for you to sign.”
Death chuckles.
Death: “Always more work.”
Akane puts the documents onto Death’s desk and comes up to him. She leans into Death’s chair and sits on his lap. She has her arms around him, and he has his around hers.
Akane smiles at Death like a child.
Death smiles back.
Death: “I love you, Akane Hayakawa.”
Akane leans in. The two kiss tenderly.
