Chapter 5:

Search for a God

End of Despair

Yuto managed to kill Demi, the Demigoddess of Observation, after she miscalculated the timing of his arrival. However, she was one of the weakest deities in the human realm. She mentioned a certain God of Distortion, the origin of all supernatural powers on Yuto's planet and in many other dimensions.

Demi's family had a long-standing grudge against that deity, so she had to take matters into her own hands. She targeted Haji, the God of Distortion's main vessel, killing her before Yuto could unleash his full rage on her. This weakened the god, but he was nowhere near as weak as they could handle on their own.

The solution? Teaming up with as many gods as they could. Some were friendly, others...

Yuto: "Please, help us! We have to kill him, but we can't do it alone."

Zetsu's smile faltered for a second. Yuto was kneeling in front of her, showing his utmost respect. She, however, was not feeling the despair she loved.

Zetsu: "..."

Yuto: "We... We are desperate..."

Zetsu: "How many times have you rehearsed that line?"

Yuto: "Huh? I didn't mean to be disrespectful. I'm sorry if I was rude."

Zetsu: "So you only came here because I'm one of the strongest gods?"

She walked closer to him and lifted his head to look her in the eyes. She was clearly not happy.

Zetsu: "You came here all by yourself, expecting me to comply. Did you know that I can kill you whenever I please?"

Yuto: "I know."

Zetsu: "That old man... the God of Observation. Did you really trust him?"

Yuto: "I had no choice..."

Zetsu: "He suggested you see me, because I have reasons not to kill you. You simply complied, because you 'had no other option'..."

The God of Observation was Demi's grandfather. Even though Yuto killed his granddaughter, the old man didn't care. Instead, he even helped Yuto by telling him useful information about the divine realm.

Zetsu: "Do you know why he helped you?"

Yuto: "No... maybe he wants something in return?"

Zetsu: "I don't know either. He's unpredictable, but the divine council doesn't allow him to directly interfere in things. He has a contract that limits his powers."

Yuto: "I know he's using me."

Zetsu: "He may be using you, but he's usually a generous grandpa. He's not an entirely evil god."

Yuto: "Is that a good or bad thing?"

She frowned in annoyance.

Zetsu: "Do you remember that astronaut girl in Lunig?"

Yuto: "Huh?"

Zetsu: "The one who did that to her... was me."

Yuto: "..."

Zetsu: "Be grateful, you bastard. I saved your ass back there."

Yuto: "But you killed the astronaut... I didn't even get to know her name."

Zetsu: "Her mind was already broken enough. She was practically inviting me to take over."

Yuto: "..."

Zetsu: "Why aren't you scared? You should be shaking right now."

Yuto: "You're not using your powers."

Zetsu: "I know, you disgusting piece of shit. Humans should always fear me, even while I sleep. Get the fuck out before I smash your skull."

He left her domain. She obviously didn't like him, so her help was never an option.

Yuto returned to the mountain they used to contact Zetsu and ask her to invite him into her domain. Kanata was impatient, thinking about all the bad things that monster could have done to him. She hugged him warmly.

Kanata: "Did she do anything to you?"

Yuto: "I'm fine, don't worry. I have a feeling she doesn't like me."

Kanata: "What did she say?"

Yuto: "As expected. We'll have to find other gods."

After an indefinite amount of time, they managed to kill the God of Distortion. At a huge cost, however: Yuto's life.

God of Observation: "Goddess of Despair, I have a job for you."

The God of Observation was a balding old man. His long hair and beard were purple, and his robe was white. He sat on his throne, inside an observatory in the middle of a floating disk in space. It was his domain.

Zetsu: "Huh? Are you asking for my help now?"

GoO: "That human, Ishikawa Kanata. She became unstable after her brother's death."

Zetsu: "So you want me to take her out?"

GoO: "You may use any means necessary."

Zetsu: "What? You think this is a challenge? Oh, I see. I can do whatever I want, right?"

The God of Observation never looked directly at the person he spoke to.

GoO: "I don't care what happens to her universe. Her awakening must be contained at all costs."

Zetsu: "So you don't want her to become a goddess, do you? Guess what, I'll train her. But don't worry, it's all under my control."

GoO: "I know."

Zetsu: "I've wanted this opportunity for so long... I'm finally going to have some real fun."
