Chapter 8:
Soldier Clasess
It's Mallory 4th day of school and this one is her first full official one as she's now a trainee in Class 3-D. She's been reading her soldier book Drill Sergeant Harvey gave to her on her first day and practicing everything the book says to do (without disturbing her family members so they won't find out).
The first moment when she arrives to school was find Anna as she texted her on snapchat telling her where they should meet. Anna told Mallory to meet her at the library, so Mallory rushed to library, however she did got yelled by a teacher to walk. As she speedwalk her way to the library she looked outside of the library and said to herself, "Woah! this place is huge!"
Anna saw her and used her hand to say "get in here!"
"Man this library is huge!" Mallory whispered to Anna, "What books do they have here?"
"Mostly young adult books, nonfictions, as well as comics, manga, and light novels." Anna whispered.
Mallory checked out the comics/manga/light novel section (they're all combined). She saw a huge collection of Marvel comics and One Piece volumes.
"They have every One Piece volume here." Mallory cried saying this "It's beautiful."
"We have to head to class in five minutes but if you want to check out a book go right ahead." Anna tells her.
Mallory checked out a Mission: Yozakura Family volume because she plans on reading the manga.
After Mallory was done both she and Anna speedwalked to Class 3-D where they met a certain person.
"Hey the weirdo and the new girl finally showed up!" they snarked.
"Emily why do you care about us, you're not even a popular kid anymore ever since what happened to your family." Anna told Emily.
"What the hell happened to her family?" Mallory asked.
"Nothing happened to my family stupid! It's just that I used to be rich and now I'm just like everyone else here." Emily told her, "Damn that house fire!"
"So your house got burned?" Mallory asked.
"Yes, and as a result my family had to use their bank account to pay for everything and now we just live in a regular house like everyone else." Emilly yelled.
"Ok ok I had no idea you were even rich to begin with." Mallory told her.
Mallory and Anna rushed to class to take their seats.
When the bell rang it was time for PT.
This time outside of the usual pushups and other exercises afterwards all of them head to the gym to run two miles in order not to reveal the information that they're training to be soldiers all of the class had to change to civilian clothes in the male and female lockers respectively in order to head to the gym.
Mallory was exhausted while running she barely made it to the second mile and after she died she passed out.
After the two mile run is over Drill Sergeant Harvey praised her, "Well congratulations I thought you didn't have it in you. But you did it. At least you're neither Tristan nor Arley because neither of them barely did anything."
"Thank you" Mallory wheezed.
"You see Mallory, this is no regular school. This is one of the biggest High Schools in the world, especially for people who plan on serving in the military. This school started as a military school, but later wanted to focus more on education rather than just the military because the population of Hillen was growing and this was the only High School in close to their home for some people. As a result they abandoned anything related to the military. As students increased the school decided to make a decision which was to split all the students in four categories. The first category was for the popular, wealthy, and intelligent students, the second one was for the students that were neither of the ones for the first but had high GPAs and did well both in education and socially, the third category was for the average students that just exist as many of these people had average grades and may be known or not. Just basically nobodies. And lastly the fourth category which is this class: it's a class for the undesirable, the rejects, the unintelligents, low-income, and unpopular students. Yes this is why you're in this class."
"What?" Mallory shouted.
"Well according to your report we received from your previous school, they told us your barely participate and never show any effort in class." Drill Sergeant Harvey tells her.
Mallory stuttered.
"Yeah they told us everything about you every negative record you had there and all your grade scores." Drill Sergeant Harvey told her. "You know why this is a military class?"
"Why?" Mallory asked.
"Because, the school Principal McFarland wanted us to do something different he realized this class is going nowhere. So he wanted to make this class a military class but we should keep it a secret from the other students and your parents." Drill Sergeant Harvey explained to Mallory.
"All of the class were in the same class since freshmen year? That doesn't make any sense to group students like that." Mallory told Drill Sergeant Harvey.
Drill Sergeant Harvey slapped his hand on his hand. "No they weren't in the same class since freshman year they were they weren't even in classes. They start categorizing students during their junior year because they barely know these students in their freshman and sophomore years. As i was saying Principal McFarland wants to see if he can you students can be able to do something because from the results he told me since I wasn't the teacher of Class 3-D last year accord to Ms. Bowie this has has a huge history of failure. She said she's seen students dropped out of school as a result of this class, or did things in order to get themselves expelled from school. She said her age has also has been affecting her when it comes to teaching this class."
"Is that why when she drove off to Fort Tomlin she was completely grumpy?" Mallory asked.
"Yes, teaching this class has affected her mental health and made her a grumpy person in the process." Drill Sergeant Harvey told Mallory. "This place is considered Hell for a reason. Also from now on when you're talking to Drill Sergeants you better had your hands to your back and your feet apart."
After her talk with Drill Sergeant Harvey she heads back to Class 3-D with the rest of her class and changes into her school uniform in the process. With the first class being Science with Drill Sergeant Yeung.
Science was one of Mallory's least favorite subjects, she tried to pay attention but her eyes were weary.
"Hey trainee are you trying to sleep?" Drill Sergeant Yeung yelled at Mallory as her eyes were barely awake.
Mallory fully woken up your eyes. "No, Drill Sergeant!" she yelled.
"Trainee I saw your eye closed are you lying to me. Do you know what happens when you lie to a Non-commission officer?" Drill Sergeant Yeung yelled.
"What's a Non-commission officer?" Mallory asked.
"That's what the Drill Sergeants are." one of the students told Mallory.
"Thank you Callidus." Drill Sergeant Yeung told the student who answered Mallory's question and then she looked at Mallory, "Trainee, what's your last name?"
"Nhyira!" Mallory told her.
"Hey trainees all of us are going to do exercises since Nhyira can't stay awake all of you are going to be in the front leaning rest to tell her to wake up." Drill Sergeant Yeung tells the class. "Battery attention" all of the class had their heals of their shoes together, "half right face" the whole class shift to the right side of where they're at, "front leaning rest position move!"
"one, two!" the whole class shouted.
"On down you say "Wake up!" and up you say "Nhyira"."
The class did this 15 times until Drill Sergeant Yeung tells them to stop.
"Position of attention move!" Drill Sergeant Yeung yelled.
"one, two!" the whole class shouted and they went back to having their heels together on their shoes.
"Half left face" the entire class faced the front side of the classroom.
Mallory wanted a paper bag so she can hide her face.
After that it was math with Senior Drill Sergeant Griffin. It was mostly find until he caught one of the students not paying attention "Hey Tristian did you know what the video said?"
Leah Tristian was known as being the lazy person in the class who never did anything. All she did was just being in class and that was about it.
Leah didn't respond to the question at all.
"Since Tristian doesn't want to answer the question everyone go touch the tree." Senior Drill Sergeant Griffin said.
All of the students ran outside to touch the large tree outside of the classroom and after they do that they run back to the classroom.
Everyone except Leah did that.
"Since Tristian doesn't want to do it. Everyone do it for her." Senior Drill Sergeant Griffin told the class.
Everyone did it again.
After that everyone was exhausted.
There was very little time to finish off math as a result.
Then it was training.
Everyone went into the locker of their respective gender to change into their army combat uniform and then went outside to see the drill sergeants.
"Trainees today we are to be forming into groups of four so each of you will be able to train in teams." Senior Drill Sergeant Griffin told the class.
The whole class was split into teams but Senior Drill Sergeant Griffin excluded both Lily and Gina since both of them were the leaders of the class.
Senior Drill Sergeant Griffin had a hard time deciding who would be on which team at first but after awhile he finally figured out.
For Mallory her partners were Anna, Gabe, Jillian, and Chelsea, because as there were 23 students with two of them being the class leaders there had to be one team with an extra member.
"Hey, new girl." Jillian said to Mallory as she shook Mallory's hand, "My name is Jillian but you can call me Jill. It's great to meet you."
"It's great to meet you too Jill." Mallory said nervously.
"You look lovely today." Jillian told her.
"Thanks." Mallory replied.
"So what brings you to this town?" Jillian asked.
"My mom got a job here." Mallory told Jillian.
"Ok, you're going to like being in this town. It's great." Jillian told Mallory.
Chelsea didn't really say anything she was too busy drawing something.
Gabe meanwhile was checking his phone.
"Hey Gabe you better not be doing that because of the drill sergeants catches you all of us will be i trouble." Jillian told him.
"Whatever. It's not like you're my mom or anything, but you may be right." Gabe puts his phone in his pocket s after listening to her.
"Trainees have you finish introducing yourself to the other members of your squad?" Senior Drill Sergeant Griffin asked.
"No, Senior Drill Sergeant." Gabe told Senior Drill Sergeant Griffin.
"Then introduce yourself, already." Senior Drill Sergeant Griffin told them.
"Hi, I'm Gabe Walker. I like video games like Sonic and Persona, as well as anime like Chainsaw Man and Fullmetal Alchemist (both versions)." Gabe tells the group.
"Hi, I'm Anna Na-moo. I like science and reading as well as anime." Anna tells the group.
"Hi, I'm Jill Asano. I like video games and animation as a whole." Jill tells the group
"Hi, I'm Mallory Nhyira. I like anime, manga, and reading." Mallory tells the group.
Chelsea didn't want to speak but Jillian forced her to.
"Hi, I'm Chelsea Arley. I like drawing and anime." Chelsea tells the group.
"That's a lot of anime fans here." Jillian said.
"Back at my old school I used to be bullied for liking anime, but it's popular here?" Mallory asked.
"Yeah. Anime is huge in this town like." Jillian told Mallory what she said afterwards was a major spoiler for Jujutsu Kaisen saying that the town did not take it likely and class was canceled the following day.
Mallory just stared at Jillian.
"Trainees. It's time to get your weapons!" Drill Sergeant Harvey told the class.
Everyone lined up in a single file to the armory room that was near the classroom to receive their weapons, and after they receive their weapons they went to where they're group was originally at.
When Mallory and the rest of the group all received their weapons they placed the politely on the ground.
Mallory had a scythe, Anna had a giant hammer, Gabe had nunchucks, Jillian had big scissors, and Chelsea had a bow and arrow.
"They allowed you to have that?" Mallory said to Jillian looking at her big scissors.
"Yeah it wasn't too spikey nor it was a gun so they allowed me to have this as my weapon. Isn't it cool?" Jillian asked Mallory.
"It is definitely cool." Mallory replied.
"With a drill sergeant we will test your ability to use your assigned weapon. The team that gets the best grade gets a special reward." Drill Sergeant Gutiérrez. "The reward is your team will get a ribbon."
Everyone wasn't happy about that because they expected something like free food.
Drill Sergeant Gutiérrez was looking over all of the weapons of each of the class checking and grading each one.
"In all honesty most of the weapons y'all choose are hot garbage. Like I know the school forbid us from using guns but c'mon who the hell uses a baseball bat for a weapon?" he was looking at Seth when saying this. "Like yeah right why do all of you have lame tastes in weapons?"
"Well for starters most of this class have never used a weapon in their life." it was Jillian's twin sister Lauren who said this.
"How do you know that Asano?" Drill Sergeant Gutiérrez asked Lauren.
"Because no parent of a child would ever allow them to be near a weapon. My parents never allowed me to touch any sword of theirs until I turned 16." Lauren replied.
"So you're speaking for every student here. Because like there have been cases of school shootings in the country you can't just assume all parents are like yours." Drill Sergeant Gutiérrez told her.
When Mallory and the rest of her group were up Drill Sergeant Gutiérrez laughed.
"Who has the giant hammer? What are you going to do with it play fricking Whack-a-mole with it or something?" he asked.
"Um...No?" Anna replied.
"Trainee why the hell would you choose a giant hammer of all things?" Drill Sergeant Gutiérrez asked Anna.
"The reason why is because I loved the weapons that were used in "Crazie Tunes" where the mouse Morty uses a hammer on the cat Bob." Anna explains.
"Whatever!" Drill Sergeant Gutiérrez told her, he gave Anna a D- for that.
"Scissors, now that's just worse than the giant hammer!" Drill Sergeant Gutiérrez said. "Who the hell thinks scissors are weapon material?"
Jillian pulls the scissors apart and then shows one of the pieces to Drill Sergeant Gutiérrez.
"Where did you learn that from?" he asked.
"From an anime." Jillian responds.
"Well at least you're honest were you got it from." Drill Sergeant Gutiérrez told her, he gave her a C.
"Nunchucks? what is this some ninja show?" Drill Sergeant Gutiérrez asked.
"Nope. I'm using this in order to take down the aliens." Gabe told him
Drill Sergeant Gutiérrez frowned at him most of the class was well aware of how Gabe was obsessed with aliens and wanting to find them.
"I want to take them down one day." Gabe says to him.
Drill Sergeant Gutiérrez said nothing and gave him a F for that.
"Bow and arrow huh?" Drill Sergeant Gutiérrez asked.
"Yes." Chelsea told him.
"It's nothing special but I'm surprised at the design." The design is a mixture of black, red, and orange. "Are you an artist?" he asked Chelsea.
"I plan on becoming one." Chelsea told him.
Chelsea was giving a B for that.
"A scythe how impressive." Drill Sergeant Gutiérrez said, "What considered you to have this?" he asked Mallory.
"Anime." she replied.
Mallory was giving an C+.
After grading the rest of the children he gave the group of Nathan, Lauren, Gretchen, and James the ribbon because none of them has any weapon he considered as "bad".
Afterwards the bell rang.
"It's time for Chow! trainees." Drill Sergeant Gutiérrez told them.
