Chapter 5:

-Is this real?

Chounie sits back in high chair totally exasperated by the information that Navên just thrust upon her.

Navên sits in silence as her realizes what he has just did in telling Chounie the truth.

He thinks to himself; “Damn it! Maybe I should’ve kept this to myself. I just couldn’t help it; my nerves got the best of me and I made a brash decision.”

“So—“; says Navên casually to break the awkward silence.

“Well— I need time for what you just told to soak in..” says Chounie as he head completely falls backwards over the couch.

“Chounie! I know this is a lot for you to process but time is running out.” says with a look of caution.

“Oh wow! Now you want me to jump up and storm into Mrs. Morgan’s apartment like a damn SWAT team. You’ve literally been sitting on this information for weeks but NOW of all times you feel a sense of urgency.”

Chounie said as she chuckles; switching her position from leaning back on the couch to legs apart leaning forward.

She looks Navên to show her annoyance but he looks away in shame.

“Well, it’s apartment #502. If you want to get in there you’ll need a key.” says Chounie leaning back haphazardly; speaking in monotone.

“Huh! I thought you were against going up into her apartment!” exclaimed Navên with a look of confusion.

@Hey! Don’t think I’m doing this for you buddy. I’m doing this for Mrs. Morgan; she’s been one of the few people to help me and Macin. She’s given us her left overs when she had extra food and would even watch Macin sometimes when I had to run errands.” says Chounie with a sigh and a dead stair.

“She was a cool old lady and a heck of cook. I’ll tell you.” said with a blank expression on her face.

Navên looks at her with a very solemn look on his face. He turn towards the door and back to her.

“Well, how am I supposed to get the key? Uhm. Maybe I can sneak—“ pondered Navên until he was interrupted.

“No need! I got a plan!” said Chounie getting up from the couch and going into the back room.

Back downstairs in the lobby, Peña sits and watches videos on his smart phone.

When suddenly hears a crash from outside the apartment complex.

He immediately pauses the video he’s watching and stands up from his desk to look outside.

He notices only the two boys playing and thinks maybe the dropped something horsing around.

He slowly starts to sit down when he hears an even big crash this time the two boys can be seen running away.

The tall man jolts from his seat to see what is causing the ruckus.

He frantically gingerly walks out the sliding doors; to hear a huge crunch the moment his foot touched the pavement.

“What the hell?” says a bewildered Peña looking from side to side.

He notices that there is a trail of water and glass everywhere. He harkens back to the two boys running away and the sound from earlier. He suspects that they were the ones responsible for this.

“He immediately chases after them in the direction that they went yelling “Where are you little cowards? Your parents will be receiving a bill for this?”

Just as Peña is fully out of sight Navên walks around the counter like he’s taking a brochure and snags the keys off the hook. Cleverly placing them in his pocket and walking back onto the elevator.

*20 minutes before*

Chounie walks in with a bungee cord; a blanket, a balloon, and small square glass.

She proceeds to through the items down on the table and begins to assemble something.

She places the glass in the blanket and takes bungee cords and clip them together. She then takes the bungee cords and ties them around the blanket.

Chounie stood up from the couch and walked over to the bay windows. As reach the nook right in front of the windows she turned to Navên.

“I’m going to distract Mr. Peña; you make your way down stairs and get the key from off the hook.” said Chounie with a look of determination.

“How are you going to distract him anyway?” asked Navên with a look of curiosity with this.

“With this. Just go down to the lobby and wait for him to leave the desk.” urged Chounie as she swung the bungee cord back and forth.

Navên shakes his head agreeably  and walks toward the door. Just as soon as he is about to walk through it he sees Chounie open the window; flinging the bungee cord with the blanket tied to it out the window.

He shuts the door and walks down the hallway into the elevator. He waits for the *ding* signaling the doors closing and thinks “I hope whatever she has planned doesn’t cause more trouble than it’s worth.”

Chounie; with arms hanging outside with window; takes the bungee cord and yanks it upwards.

The action creates a ripple effect in the rope causing the blanket to swing upwards; only for the force of gravity to have it come swinging forcefully onto the front of the building.

*CRASH*

The glass in the blanket creates a resounding noise that can be heard from yards away.

The two boys playing in the front of the building look over in curiosity but see nothing there.

Chounie begins pulling up the blanket rapidly as not to tick off the others on the first floor of the building.

Once she pulls up the blanket from the vines of rope it is attached to she quickly lays it on the table.

She unties the blanket slowly as she wants to make quick work of knotted cloth. However, she is cautious of the contents of broken glass.

Once unraveled she picks out the a few big shards of the shattered glass to gently place themin the balloon.

She makes her way to the sink and affixes the opening of the balloon to the spigot. Allow the cold water to fill up until the balloon begins to pool.

She pulls the rim of the balloon from the spigot and begins to tie a knot.

She walks back over to the windows; holding the balloon with both hands. Scared of the slippery rubber falling from her hands and onto the floor.

She sits on the nook and looks in excitement as she has been waiting for an excuse to do what’s planning to do for a long time.

She keenly gets a visual of the two boys in the front of the apartment. The two have taken break from riding the skateboard and sitting under the awning placed above the entrance.

Chounie can make out parts of the chubby one’s body but it’s not enough to aim with accuracy.

She contemplates whether she should make her move with a clear disadvantage.

Then she realizes that Navên must be making his way to the desk and Mr. Peña needs to be gone so that he can take the keys.

So it’s either crunch time for her and her plan. Suddenly she notices the chubby boy gets up from his sitting position. He turns his head and points to the skateboard sitting on the side closer to her position.

She realizes that this is the perfect opportunity to enact her plan. So lays and waits for the boys to come closer to the skateboard.

She closes one eye and strategically aims the water balloon flush to the skateboard.

Once she sees the boys hands reach for the skateboard; she begins to tense her muscles.

She throws the water balloon into the air and slowly descends from its zenith.

The water balloon misses the skateboard but  hits boys foot instead.

Thus startling both the boys; causing them to run in panic.

As the boys run off, Mr. Peña walks out the sliding door to find water and glass everywhere.

Chounie close the window and shuts the curtains to keep her involvement with the incident hidden.

*Currently*

The elevator reaches the base floor just as Mr. Peña gets up from the desk to investigate what was happening outside.

Navên casually walk over to the desk whistling; he looks around to see if anyone is there.

Once he verifies that he is alone he walks around the desk and grabs the keys from off the hook.

He quickly makes his way back to the elevator and pushes the button.

As he waits for the doors to open, he notices Peña walk back in from outside.

Peña gets his walkie-talkie from off the desk and radios for a maintenance member to come to the entrance with a bucket.

Navên’s whistling begins to quicken; that is until he hears the *ding*  signaling the elevator has reached its destination. Once the doors open and he enters the elevator and quickly begins to press the “3” button like he was doing special technique in a video game.

The doors close and he begins to sigh; recognizing that this plan has succeeded.

He thinks to himself “Man! Chounie really did it! Now; all we have to do is find out if the dog is still alive.”

*Meanwhile*

A pair of binoculars are focused on Peña in the font of the entrance with his walkie-talkie.

They then draw their binoculars to the curtains rustling in Chounie and Macin’s apartment.
