Chapter 4:

Odd

Humanity's Last Hope

"Another missing person has been reported earlier who was named—" Rin quietly turned off the television in the living room. A small groan escaped from his lips in tiredness, revealing he hadn't got any sleep after the disappearance of his sister.

It's been 2 weeks since he lost his younger sister and the sudden disappearance of the people kept increasing week after week, one person will disappear without a single trace being left behind.

Rin kept himself holed up in their apartment not intending to attend his missing classes but he does his activities and projects in time which means his grades won't fall down dramatically with him being absent.

Kyle always drops by at Rin's apartment to check if he is still kicking and living his life ever since the disappearance of his beloved younger sister.

At first Rin found it quite amusing to see Kyle's presence from the door with a warm smile spread across his face. He was the first person who came to check on him since the day he reported that his sister had gone missing, but as days went by, Rin himself was relieved that someone was keeping an eye for him like he earned himself an older brother right after his sister not being present.

"You should start showing yourself in class you know" Kyle stated as he placed the plate full of rabbit shaped apples on the coffee table he just prepared for Rin who was not moving an inch from laying down comfortably on his couch.

The heavy bags from Rin's eyes can determine that he wasn't having a good rest.

Kyle recalled Rin's sweaty form entering the convenience store asking if he had seen his younger sibling full of worry and desperation. After that act, Kyle and Rin joined forces together in finding Yunaria but only ending up with no answer. Until one day Rin himself lost his energy in searching for his lost sister.

"She's safe I guess.." Rin mumbled under his breath, making Kyle's reassuring face turn sour in an instant. He was reassuring Rin that they will find Yunaria one day.

Kyle was about to retort back but Rin went first. "She's not coming back to me.." Rin breathed.

Kyle felt that his throat became sore, a bitter taste lingering from his mouth. 'Guilt' perhaps. Kyle only watched Rin's form in front of him, his head bowed down finding the ground interesting more than talking from eye to eye.

"I'm tired." Rin spoke monotonically as he looked at Kyle's eyes. His hazel eyes looked like it lost its light, maybe tired or 'dead'.

Kyle glanced at the lad who was lazing his ass down the couch not intending to move, which made Kyle sighed in silent brows knitting together watching Rin's form. Rin only let out a small groan cursing that his life was full of trash.

Kyle settled himself by the bean bag holding a mug with a freshly brewed coffee he just made for himself.

Another groan left from Rin's lips as he lazily reached for the rabbit shaped apples from the coffee table before popping it into his mouth earning a disappointed sigh coming from Kyle.

Rin's brows creased a little from the sigh of Kyle while munching the apple as its sweet fruity flavour spread across his taste buds.

'So this is how Yunaria feels every time I give her a disappointed look' he thought.

"Rin, I think you really need to get yourself back on track." Kyle said sipping through his coffee as Rin placed another slice of the apple into his mouth giving Kyle a disapproving look.

"Rin." Kyle called using his disappointed voice which made Rin flinch at first but he nodded in response.

"If you don't attend your classes tomorrow or show up at the school grounds. I'll make sure that you're going to be happy for the next time, I'll be visiting you with groceries" he smiled, making Rin's back filled with cold sweat as he swore to himself that his senior's eyes weren't smiling like his lips does.

Kyle quietly finished his drink, still smiling warmly but deadly at Rin who was already having a hard time swallowing the apple from his mouth.

Kyle casually looked from his wrist watch it was already 4 in the evening as he stood up from his spot carrying the mug he just used on his free hand. "It looks like I'm gonna head out for now," he said.

He looks down from Rin's position, a displeasing look covering his face as he trots away towards the sink immediately washing the dishes before heading out.

"Attend your classes tomorrow, okay?" Kyle reminds Rin who is waiting for him to leave his apartment so he can lock it and never let Kyle enter his home again.

Kyle's lips formed into a smirk as he left Rin's apartment for good. As the setting sun hits Kyle's fair skin tone while he walks in silence towards the building's elevator.

A sigh left from Rin's lips as he closed his apartment door making sure he locked it tightly and securely.

"That bastard." he hissed while clicking his tongue, walking towards his room groaning that he will start to wake up more early than the past 2 weeks he has been staying up late and sleeping the day away.

-----------

Rin stretched his arms wide letting out a satisfied huff that he is free from the chains of classes. He checked his phone for the first time in a while and it proudly stated that it was already 3 in the afternoon.

Dusting the invisible dirt from his pants as he happily left the school grounds with delight.

He took a stroll around the bustling city making his legs do the work as he wandered around with no specific destination from his mind.

As he encountered a shop that mostly caught his attention than the other flashy stores beside. It was an ordinary antique shop from the outside.

He observed the shop thoroughly as he settled himself in front of it tilting his head from the side in amusement.

"Ah! Young boy, would you like to enter?" an old man exclaimed, making Rin jump in surprise earning a small laugh from the old man.

Rin's face turned red realizing how he must've looked like a fool in front of the old man.

"I.. Uhh.." Rin fumbled by his words racking through his brain, choosing which words he should project to the old man. He cursed himself under his breath that why was he so flustered to answer the old man.

"Ah.. Youth" the old man sighed which made Rin snapped out from his internal crisis. "Would you like to examine the things inside my shop?" he asked again, giving Rin a toothy grin as his wrinkles smiled at him too.

Rin let out a small huff as he smiled back at the old man. "Sure."

The old man happily opened his shop's door inviting Rin to enter, which he happily obliged. When Rin entered the shop he was almost taken aback by the antiques that displayed around the shop, giving it a nostalgic yet new interest to his eyes. The old man who was standing by his side let out a satisfied smile witnessing the glint in Rin's eyes.

"Feel free to look around, young man" the old man said as he settled himself back at the register's counter with a proud huff.

Rin absentmindedly nodded while making his way to where his eyes caught on.

After a few inspections of the things around the shop, one odd looking obsidian cube resting inside a glass box caught his whole attention.

He thoroughly studied and inspected the cube with his watchful amber eyes. He swore to himself that he might have seen the cube before but he can't seem to point out when.

Spacing out in front of the glass box with his head tilted from his side. In the old man's point of view looking at Rin's curious look with his brows furrowed proving that he is storming through his brain seriously, he found it rather entertaining looking at Rin's expression, he let out a quiet chuckle but it soon dropped when his eyes landed on the glass box revealing the display of the obsidian cube.

A sudden realization came from the old man; he silently shook his head from side to side as he approached the curious Rin from the back.

Rin who tilted his head from left to right as he mumbled under his breath with a breathless sigh after. "How weird, I am sure that I've seen this before but I am also certain that I haven't seen it before."

"Ahem!" the old man cleared his throat loudly making Rin flinch by surprise which made him snapped from his thoughts but he managed to straighten himself as he looked at the old man who was standing behind him with an innocent smile plastered on his face, his wrinkles complimented his eyes showing how old he has been living through the years.

"What do you have here, boy?" he asked.

"An odd cube."

"I see,"

"How long has this thing been here?"

"It was passed down to me by my ancestors,"

A brief silence came to the two of them but it also broke with the old man questioning the curious Rin.

"Do you want to have the cube?"

Rin suddenly choked on his own saliva as he stumbled through his words.

"I would love to.. Wait.. No! I mean I could possibly buy it if the price is not that high.. But! It was passed down by your ancestors."

The old man raised one of his eyebrows, liking the entertainment that Rin doesn't seem to notice the amusement he was giving to the old man. He laughed at Rin's flustered face, making Rin curse at himself more.

"You can have it," the old man laughed.

Rin's mind went blank as soon as he heard the old man say, he absentmindedly blinked repeating what the old man just said.

"I can own it?"

The old man smiled while nodding, waiting patiently for Rin to gather himself back up.

"Can I really have it?"

The old man hummed in agreement which made Rin look at the old man in disbelief.

------

Rin walked towards his apartment sighing every oxygen that he inhaled, he glanced at the paper bag dangling from his hand with full disgust and disappointment. He literally brought with him the obsidian cube without paying the old man. Well the shopkeeper was persistent on giving it to Rin without any payment.

Walking through the busy city with lights surrounding him. Rin even realized on how much busier the night is than in the morning, in his despair sighing every time he inhaled, doubting himself how he failed to be a good human being in debt with the old man whom he didn't know its name but in reality Rin wasn't in debt with the old man. The old man himself willingly gifted Rin for being the second person who found his little shop hidden from the flashy ones beside it.

Letting out another sigh he trotted his way from the busy crowd towards his apartment silently.

------

Arriving at his apartment's doorstep, he quietly opened his door entering the cold hallway emitting from the emptiness of his sister's presence.

"I'm home" Rin announced himself which he knew that no one was waiting for him. He quietly removed his shoes, putting it back at the shoe rack as he trotted his way towards his room not minding how dark the living room was. It was already evening, he reminded himself.

As he entered his room he placed his belongings on the floor as he headed straight to his bed, flopping his whole body to the soft mattress letting his consciousness drift away towards the abyss.

-----

Waking up in the middle of the night wasn't new to Rin since he worked himself off for the two of them. Rin hoisted his body up as he stretched himself getting ready to work when he suddenly came to his realization.

"Oh"

"She's not here." he laughed at himself from the foolishness he just did.

His eyes became watery again but Rin held his chin up facing the white ceiling that was still dark since he got up around 2 in the morning. Fighting his tears back as he kept on laughing on how dumb his actions were. The laugh soon became silent sobs, tears rushing to his cheeks. He brought his arm to his face, covering his unstable state from no one.

Small sobs were heard around the dark and cold room but Rin didn't mind the coldness nor the darkness he just wanted to see his little sister who went missing for almost half of the month.

His muffled sobs came to a halt when his eyes landed on the bag which contained the obsidian cube from the antique shop he passed by yesterday. Rin found his way towards the bag despite his room being surrounded by the dark. Only the moonlight from his window was his only light.

He dug his hands to the bag eagerly searching for the cube, when it suddenly floated out from the bag leaving Rin's flushed face in awe.

Odd.

That word just came to his mind before he straightened his posture. It was definitely odd. Rin knew that something was off with the cube he just brought to his house. Lost in his own thoughts he absentmindedly touched the floating cube in front of him.

----

"Keiran!" a cheery high-pitched tone called the boy who was about at the age of 10 reading his favorite book under the oak tree.

The sky was sunny and bright, the breeze was cool making the weather just as fair as the warm light.

Keiran tore his ocean blue irises from the book to the two forms who were walking towards his way with both of their smiles radiating with the light from the sun.

'How peaceful' Keiran thought.

"What brings you two here?" Keiran asked as he brushed his neatly combed raven hair removing the fallen leaf that came from the tree.

The girl cheerfully squealed which made Keiran's brow raised in suspicion towards the girl as his eyes wandered and locked gazes with the red ones.

"Rouge, care to explain?" he asked.

Rouge who was the same age as Keiran along with the girl standing beside him.

Rouge's vermilion red eyes only smiled at Keiran with his snowy white hair dancing along the wind.

Keiran frowned at his friend who is all smiley on the outside but a trickster from the inside.

His eyes landed on the excited girl who was jumping up and down with her sandals. Her auburn wavy hair bounced poorly due to her bun that was tightly put up in one place, sapphire orbs glinted beautifully through the sunlight with her cheerful smile as always.

"Elira, why are you acting so jumpy in the middle of the morning?" Keiran sternly glared at the girl who only laughed at him followed by the white haired beside her.

Keiran frowned by both of his friends' antics as he rolled his ocean-colored eyes from the two only to turn his attention back to the book.

"Fools" he muttered while frowning which made Elira and Rouge laugh louder than before, causing Keiran to frown all by the rest of the day.
