Chapter 18:

Gilded Cage Match

The Star I Want to Reach

Seraphina was chemically triggered by the realization that Mateo was somewhere in the same vast city, breathing the same air, and walking its uncaring streets by himself. It accentuated the already painful contrast between her growing yearning for something real and the strict artificiality of her schedule. Now, every request from her team, every arranged photo op, and every meticulously planned public appearance felt not only exhausting but unbearable.

During a regular scheduling call with Janice, the tipping point was reached. They were going over the schedule for an upcoming industry awards ceremony, which Seraphina typically had to endure with professional resignation. The pre-event'mingling' strategy, which Janice was describing, included a carefully planned 'chance encounter' with a recently unmarried actor the label was eager to promote.

With a mask of calm efficiency, Janice was speaking quickly over the video call, "so you'll 'bump into' Noah near the step-and-repeat." "Remain playful and lighthearted. No matter what, laugh at something he says. There will be a briefing for the photographers. It will produce headlines for both of your next projects. "Synergy."

Seraphina gazed at the screen, at Janice's smiling, planning face. It felt grotesque all of a sudden, the deliberate manipulation, the reduction of human interaction to a public relations ploy. Because of her, because of their impossible connection, Mateo was out there, perhaps struggling to pay for his next meal, trying to make sense of this overwhelming city. And she was supposed to pose as flirting for the camera?

Something broke inside her. Decisively, but not loudly.

Seraphina said, "No," in a quiet voice that cut through Janice's high-pitched voice.

Janice stopped and blinked, obviously surprised by the blatant rejection. "I apologize, honey. Did the connection go down? I was merely summarizing the exchange with Noah.

"I heard you," Seraphina cut in, speaking at a level tone. "And I declined. I refuse to do it.

Silence for a beat. Janice's polished grin slightly tightened. "Perhaps you didn't understand, Sera, my love. This is not a choice. It is crucial from a strategic standpoint. Noah's team and your label have already given their approval.

Seraphina said, "Then they can unsign," with a rush of adrenaline and a sense of dread at her own foolishness. "I also need to adjust my schedule in general, Janice, while we're at it. I require real vacation time.

Janice's eyes narrowed as she leaned forward a little. "Seraphina, we've talked about this. You've planned some downtime. Next Tuesday's spa day and the yoga retreat prior to the flight to Tokyo...

Seraphina's response, "That's not time off, Janice, that's scheduled maintenance," tasted surprisingly liberating. "I'm referring to real time. Not planned. unattended. There are days when I'm not Seraphina the brand, when my phone isn't tracked, and when I don't have a security detail shadowing my every move."

Janice's expression changed from one of controlled alarm to one of forced patience. There was rebellion here, not just pre-tour anxiety. With a tone of measured, profound concern, she leaned back. "Let's be reasonable, Seraphina. Both your privacy and safety need to be managed. The procedures are in place to keep you safe. Furthermore, unplanned time for someone your level invites chaos, to be honest. press misunderstandings, security lapses, and paparazzi intrusions. Is that your preference?

"What I want," Seraphina stated, her voice trembling a little but remaining firm, "is to feel like a human being for five minutes." Janice, I feel like I'm suffocating. on fumes. I'll burn out completely, so there won't be a brand left to manage if I don't have some real space to breathe." She was using self-care terminology, which Janice typically supported, as a tool for her own independence.

Janice's mind was obviously calculating angles as she processed this. She changed strategy and lowered her voice once more. "I understand burnout, honey. Really. However, it sends the wrong message to abruptly cancel commitments and demand unsupervised time just before the most important tour leg. It is an indication of instability. The sponsors start to doubt their investment, and the label becomes uneasy. Consider the repercussions. The air was heavy with the veiled threat.

Janice played the loyalty card and added, "Consider the team." "The road crew, the dancers, and Marcus have all put in a lot of work. They rely on you being dependable and focused. Everyone is impacted when someone leaves, even for a few days.

Seraphina experienced the familiar pressure and guilt that came with those arguments. These strategies had kept her in line inside the gilded cage for years. However, the awareness of Mateo's existence and his representation of an alternative, genuine reality provided her with an unanticipated sense of stability.

Seraphina clarified, "I'm not walking away," while holding her hands together in her lap to prevent them from shaking. "To avoid a major collapse, I'm requesting a small change. The Noah stunt should be canceled. And next week, give me just two days in a row without any plans, calls, or check-ins. Liam is welcome to be close by, but he shouldn't be fastened to my hip. It was a bargain, a last-ditch effort to gain some freedom.

Janice gazed at her, obviously reevaluating. Seraphina had no intention of retreating. Janice probably didn't want to take the chance of completely destroying their working relationship by pushing too hard now. However, giving in too much would create a risky precedent.

Janice slowly said, "Two days," trying to test the words. Not at all scheduled. That's incredibly erratic. Additionally, the Noah interaction has already begun.

Encouraged by Janice's hesitancy, Seraphina demanded, "Then put it out of motion," "Or I won't be attending the awards show at all." It was a more dangerous ultimatum than anything she had ever tried.

There was a long pause. Janice's face was calculating and unreadable. At last she nodded, firmly, almost imperceptibly. She said, "Fine," in a clipped voice. We will not be holding the Noah 'encounter.'" Additionally, I will free up 48 hours on your schedule for Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. For safety, Liam will always be aware of your general location even though he will keep a discreet distance. Her eyes narrowed, "And Seraphina, I don't expect any surprises or drama during that time. and complete, steadfast dedication to all other scheduled tasks both before and after. "Are we clear?"

Seraphina said, "Clear," her heart racing. She had prevailed. A minor triumph, but a triumph none the less. The wall of the cage had developed a tiny crack.

Seraphina felt exhausted but oddly electrified as the call came to an end. She had resisted, set a limit, and didn't give up right away. The conflict was draining, the compromise was small, and she was aware that Janice would be closely observing her, suspicions surely sparked. The'match' had not ended yet. However, she had carved out a tiny window of opportunity, 48 hours of possible independence. It was an exciting and terrifying thought. How would she use it? Given the attention she was receiving, could she risk using it to close the distance with Mateo? The question lingered in the air, laden with potential and tremendous danger.
