Chapter 3:
Caelum et al.
What even happened? It’s hard to remember anything, my head hurts…
Slowly, but surely, it all comes back to me. That girl, drugged me? But where am I now? I stand up, and look around. There’s a few other people in the other cells.
“Excuse me, what the hell is going on?” I say, trying to get this girl’s attention.
“…” She looks at me, but stays silent.
I put my hands on the prison bars, and try to use all the strength Seraphin has given me to bend them open. No use. It seems these aren’t regular iron bars, these were made recently, post-Seraphin craze. The girl looks at me while I try to bend the bars.
“There’s no point…we’re as good as dead.”
I look back at her, desperate to get an answer to what’s going on.
“Dead? What’s going to happen to us??”
“…The half devils…you know what they do, right…?”
As soon as she says that, my heart drops. So…that girl with the sickly sweet voice, she must’ve been bait. Fuck me. Obviously, all my stuff that I had on me is gone. I close my right eye for some kind of guidance in this situation.
The fucking…gallows?! I’m surrounded by a huge crowd of people too…what the hell am I supposed to do about that?! The girl in the other cell is there with me too.
“H-hey…what’s your ability? Y’know, the one the Seraphin gave you, maybe we can use it to get out of here!”
“…” She turns away from me. “…what if you’re a part of that cult too?”
“N-no! I swear I’m not! I got drugged by some girl last night! That’s why I’m here!”
“…Is that the best you can come up with?” She sighs, and stops talking.
I really am fucked.
“ALRIGHT! UP N’ AT ‘EM!” Someone who I can only assume to be the prison guard yells, while banging on the cell bars. “Stick your hands out!”
As he puts cuffs on me and unlocks my door, he talks to me. “How’s our catch of the day doing? I’ve heard all about you y’know, trying to ‘get lucky’ was it? Your kind’s meat always tastes the best, and I bet you’re no different!”
“W-what the hell? She drugged me! That bitch-“
Before I can finish my sentence, he punches me directly in the gut. It’s extremely painful, and it almost feels like a gunshot. “Shut it, and get moving!”
We’re brought out to what I saw in my vision—the gallows. The rope they’re using isn’t even rope, it looks like steel cables off of some structure. How the fuck am I supposed to get out of this?
“Hello ladies and gentleman! Today we have two fresh captures, thanks to miss #98 and Mr. #102! I know how excited you all are to feast, but we can’t have dinner without a little entertainment first!” I see that woman, the one who drugged me in the crowd. She has the most evil smirk on her face as she winks at me. That…bitch!
The crowd of around 20 people cheer. I remember rumors about this cult that they had thousands of members, they must’ve really thinned out over the past few years. I gotta think fast. My hands are in cuffs, and even if I were to somehow get them off, I then have to deal with 20 or so people trying to kill me. As the announcer continues his speech, the girl looks at me and motions me to look at her hands with her eyes. Wait—where did her cuffs go? Is she in on this? Before I can think, one of the people in the crowd draws a gun.
“Hey! The fuck are you doing? Put that thing away!” The announcer yells.
“I-I can’t!” She raises her hands up. “My hand’s aren’t even on it!”
“What the fu-“ Before the announcer can even finish his sentence, he gets his head blown off. The small crowd of people go into a frenzy.
The girl that was locked up with me pushes me. “C’mon, run, now!”
We get behind a couple of cars for cover.
“What was that? Was that your ability?”
“Yes, but I can explain later! Here!” Out of nowhere, a gun drops into my lap. I close my right eye for a moment.
“One of them is hiding behind that sedan we passed, shoot the brake light and you’ll get his head.” Without questioning me, she does what I say, killing one of them. “Where’s the other?”
I close my eye again. “Shit!”
I get out of cover and fire two shots, I miss both shots. A bullet goes through my right ear. It’s incredibly painful, but right as he’s about to fire again, the magazine and bullet in the chamber of his gun fly out. I push past the pain and kill him with my next shot.
“You should’ve answered me, then you’d probably still have an ear.”
“Sorry, he was getting really close.” I close my eye again.
“The rest of that crowd, they’re coming. We need to get out of here.”
She breaks the window of the car we’re hiding behind, and opens the door, “Get in!”
Suddenly, the car starts without any key, and she floors it out of there.
Or, at least I thought she would. We’re heading straight back to that camp!
“H-hey, what are you doing? We should be heading the other way!”
“There’s not much gas left in this car, if we drive away we won’t make it very far. There’s no guarantee they won’t follow us either.”
“But what the hell are we going to do against all those people? If you’re planning on running them over they’ll just shoot us before we do!”
“It’s a bit risky, but there isn’t too many of them. Using my magnetism I can disable all their guns, it’ll be hard for me but just steer it into them!”
This is fucking insane. But what am I supposed to do? Barrel out of the car? As we close in on the group, their guns are drawn, but suddenly they all one by one fall apart. The car plows into all of them, and we hit our heads on the dashboard of the car from the impact.
I lift my head up, and see one more person still alive. I grab my gun and land a lucky shot to the head instantly.
“Is that all of them? I think so…”
“Yeah, I don’t see anybody else. I can’t feel any other firearms moving either.” She says. Her nose is bleeding profusely, is it from the impact, or did she push herself too hard?
“Hey, are you alright? Damn, the airbags didn’t even work in this piece of shit.”
“Yeah, it happens sometimes when I use my ability to its limits. I’m fine though, just a bit of a headache.” She smiles at me, and it’s like a breath of fresh air in this barren wasteland. At least there’s one person not trying to kill me, and perhaps I won’t be so alone anymore.
“So, what now? If you’re willing to come with me, I’m tracking down the scientist who’s responsible for Seraphin. There was talk of a cure he was developing.”
She just stares off into space.
“Hey, I know you said you’re alright, but you’re spacing out on me.”
She doesn’t move a muscle. Doesn’t even blink. I tap her on the shoulder, but I still don’t get a response. I check her pulse, and
She’s dead. Not from any wound, just dead.
