Chapter 1:
Shadow of Oblivion
If I could have one thing
For the rest of my life it would be..
'Hey peasant... I said Hey!'
Please let him be talking to someone else, in the dusty streets of Sin Libertad, nobles have complete control over 'peasants' like me.
Smack, a sudden edge of pain raised in my head, I guess he was talking to me..
'How dare you ignore me?'
That voice again, with my hand on my head, I turn around to see a boy looming over me, towering over me as if I were an ant in his sandbox.
The female, I could tell, instigated this.
'He thinks he's better than your brother'
A crowd began to form, circling, almost observing, but not for my safety.
'Sorry, but I have to go or I'll be late'
I made one step to leave and got yanked back three more.
'Have your parents taught you nothing?' Each word he said was full of hatred and disgust. His face twisted every second, every moment. I could feel it growing; it was intense and burning. If looks could kill, I'd be long gone.
'I'm an orphan'
'Dam, pick a struggling black and an orphan'
So that's it, they laughed mockingly. It was rather infuriating before I knew it. My fist clenched, my heart ran from the darkness into the void. I pushed it back; it would be suicide. The crowd was blocking my only escape, and the more who gathered, the more I could tell they enjoyed this.
'Speaking of parents, ' I say, 'Isn't your mom a tramp
Silence, even the crowd stops murmuring, the dusty pavement stops flying into my eyes, and it's getting harder to breathe. I must have outdone myself to get this kind of reaction; The tension is killing me.
Then it changes their faces twist, fist, clench, their faces go from white to pale to now red, very unnoble, like I thought they called me over to make jokes, guess it was to scratch their ego, and talking about egos, they've got a dent.
'YOU DARE SPEAK TO ME LIKE THAT!'
The pitch of his voice changes up and down, what doesn't is the velocity of his fist as they make contact with my stomach, winding me, I feel my lungs collapse.
'YOU FILITHY PIECE OF SHIT!'
'DIE!'
'DON'T YOU KNOW I'M LORD DAMEIN OF HOUSE GOODSWELL!'
My nose starts bleeding, but that's the least of my concerns because I'm late, and I feel like he's breathing the life out of me.
'Huh'
The bombarding stops as he pants vigorously, inhaling the air ( leave some for me, I'm the one dying ). he turns away, and the crowd parts for him. Funny how they didn't do that for me.
'You best remember me, 'Monkey'
He says before finally departing
'How unique, ' I mutter
My body's throbbing like a wounded animal, the crowd slowly disperses, some muttering with pity, others saying I deserved it.
I slowly help myself up the city of Sin Libertad. It's a small city, a dusty one too, with no roads and the glaring sun relentless.
Black people and white people too empires which fought savagely purely out of hate from the holiest of priest to the honarable of knights both empire did it out of pure destest this war left irreplacable scars on the world this was until dimensions appeared with only one goal killing bot empires came together to fight the 'greater evil' Sin Libertad is one of the cities full of both white and black people.
My headaches, I can feel it beating my face, are already swollen, I think deformed, not to mention I'm late.
'Leywin!'
I recognise that voice, it's Elijah. I glance over as he charges over
He helps me up; he's covered in sweat. Did he run the whole way
'Hey Elijah'
'What happened to you? You missed it.
He's about to say something else, but notices the sadness in my face, so he decides to comfort me.
That's Elijah for you; he's not the brightest but will always go the extra mile.
'Tell me what happened'
As we walk back to the orphanage, no, as he carries me back to the laughing orphanage, I explain what happened.
'Bastards'he says pissed 'tell me the faces of the people watching so me and them can have a chat'
I laugh as we arrive at the orphanage, and we see some kids still playing
'Hah, ha, you look funny, Leywin'
I make a face at them, and they laugh. The orphanage is a cottage made of wood in this city. There are more orphanages than homes.
'Hey Prodigy'
It's Destiny she's lying on the veranda, but moves up to look at me.
'Hey'
Where were you... What happened to your face?' she asks
Destiny's my childhood friend; unlike me and Elijah, she's mixed and not to mention beautiful, with her amazing face, black hair that reaches her neck, and perfect lips.
'What's up with the bruises? ' You're all blue. Is that too much to go with the black?'
Did I mention she's a comedian? I roll my eyes. Elijah laughs. I nudge him. he keeps laughing. I'm about to smack him when the door creaks open.
'Kids come in'
It's a mother. She's wearing her usual maid outfit. She is middle-aged, though she looks way younger, has hair in a ponytail, and is white. At first, I didn't want to call her mother, but she took care of us for 13 years, it's the least I can do (not to mention all the spankings)
'Leywin, ' You look awful'
'Hi mom'
'I'm sorry I missed it, ' I say, sad
'It's fine when Elijah ran to find you, Destiny insisted that they come back'
I look at her, wondering why she looks so smug.
'It was quite cute'
She blushes, I can't believe it, all three of us will be going to the Junior Forces.
Junior Forces is one of the best academies for black and white people. You need to go to for two years until fifteen and be able to acquire a technique from the divine tower, they teach you all sorts of things from swordfighting to blacksmithing I managed to get a scholarship due to my excellent skills today I was ment to have my final assessment guess it dosen't matter know though
'You'll leave in three days, and your uniforms will arrive tomorrow. Now wash yourself before your dinner'
'Yes, mother, ' she creaks the door back inside as Elijah nudges me.
'Excited yet'
I grin at Destiny; she grins back
'How sweet of you, ' I say
She blushes and runs back in.
Elijah carries me back in to think I'll be leaving here in three days.
After I've bathed and eaten, I go to my and Elijah's room, though he's already in bed.
Silence
'Leywin'
'Yeah'
'Why do you go there every Tuesday?' 'Too, that burned house, you say you have no memories of your parents'
'I don't know'
For as long as I can remember, I've been drawn there like I have some sort of attachment to the place or unfinished business. I just sit there waiting for it to click. Tuesday I dont know. The more I remember, the more the abyss consumes it, know its just a fazey image
Silence
'Elijah'
'Yeah'
'If you could have one thing what would it be'
'For everyone in this orphanage to have peace without tax collectors being unfair to mom and nobles targeting us'
'What about you'
'Freedom' I say
