Chapter 9:
Race to the End
It was more than an hour drive before the group would reach the destination on the map. During that time, Mila triaged her sister. Her left arm was definitely fractured and maybe her left leg as well. Those things were easily fixable but the thing that had Mila worried was the dark bruising on her sister's abdomen and the popped blood vessels in her eyes. These things were evidence of potentially serious injury and could potentially require surgical intervention.
Mila was unsure if those would be possible at the place they were headed. She just hoped that no matter what they would be able to help her sister. Mila was often a jerk to her, but she really loved her older sister. Most of the attitude came from bitterness over Misa going away in the first place. She wasn't even around when their parents died. Mila knew that Misa didn't mean to abandon them, but that's basically what happened while she was in the Navy.
She could remember the day that her sister approached her with her paperwork. Mila was only 9 at the time and was devastated by the news and pleaded with her sister to stay. What Mila didn’t realize then is that Misa didn’t have much of a choice. Their parents were really bad off financially and would not be able to continue taking care of Misa. College was out of the question at the time because of this budget issue, and she was too intelligent to become an educated worker. Rather than giving up Misa contracted with the government so they would have to pay for her education and as soon as she was able she started taking online classes.
Though Misa did leave them, Mila would be devastated if she lost her sister too. That was the last female role model that she had deep-down, Mila really admired her older sister’s bravery. Misa was often the type of person who would hurt herself in order to make sure that other people were safe. It was just what she did back at the hospital. All of them but Misa would probably have been dead right now if she didn’t keep that monster busy. Suddenly Mila felt eyes looking at her. When she looked up, Max was staring at her with her beautiful and gentle eyes.
“Mila, are you ok? You’re crying.”
Mila touched her cheeks. They were wet. She hadn’t even noticed that she was crying. She opened her mouth to talk but instead all she could do was sob.
Simon looked in the rear view mirror and saw Mila sobbing. “It’s really bad isn’t it, sis?”
When all Mila did was look at him, Simon started crying too. He slammed down the gas pedal. “I’ll get us there as fast as I can!”
When Mila’s teardrops hit Misa’s face, she let out a groan and her eyes fluttered open. “Chin up kiddo, I’m not dead yet. They should be able to help me where we are going. Dry your tears. I’ll at least live that long. But did we get any pain killers?”
Mila cried harder and hugged her sister’s head. “Misa, I’m so sorry for all the times I was an ass to you. I love you big sis, I’m so sorry!”
Misa let out a big sigh, “I know that you idiot. I know.”
Misa grunted again. “Don’t be alarmed. I’m going to faint again. The pain is way too much. Wake me when we get there.” Misa went limp.
Max jumped into the back seat and moved so Mila could sit on her lap. They cuddled and before long, both girls were fast asleep. Simon let out a sigh. They were almost at their destination. He was tired too so hopefully they would be able to rest a bit.
Soon he saw a large fenced area come into view. He stopped the car and shook Mila awake. She rubbed her eyes.
“Mila wake up Misa and Max, I think we are here.”
The area was surrounded by rolling hills covered in dry brush and weeds. The fence was at least 12 ft high with barbed wire at the top and a caution sign that made Simon think it was electrified. He drove slowly toward the gate which had several floodlights and large security cameras on the periphery.
A voice started talking to him from out of nowhere.
“State your name and your purpose. Do not move or you will be shot.” A red dot appeared on his t-shirt.
“My name is Simon Stanley. I just followed my sister’s map here. She is in need of emergency medical attention.”
A drone flew closer to the SUV. “Roll down your window slowly, then out your hands on the steering wheel”. Simon complied.
From the drone, “Did you say Stanley?”
Misa let out another groan. “Hey Gordo is that you?”
“Lt.Stanley?! You made it this far?”
“Barely, I’m pretty bad off Gordo. Like I won’t be able to walk to the gate. Can you all just make an exception for me and come get me? My siblings are so tired and I need help like now.”
“Copy LT.”
Within a few seconds the red dot disappeared from Simon’s chest and a group of 6 people in full combat apparel jogged to the car. They ordered everyone to get out. Rolled out a stretcher and carried Misa away. One of the soldiers stayed behind with a worried expression on her face.
“Get your shit kids. Do it fast so we can get back to LT.”
All the girls complied, grabbing the supplies and their go bags. They were led into the compound that only had one structure. The guard tower. Otherwise the place seemed vacant. The soldiers carrying Misa were nowhere to be seen. The lady they were with banged the floor three times fast, then after a few clicks. A door opened from the floor. They all exchanged nervous glances.
The woman removed her helmet which revealed a breathtakingly beautiful face with flowing brown hair and green eyes. “Hi there kids, my name is Stella. Welcome to our doomsday bunker. Most of it is underground. Come on now. Let’s get our asses inside”
